🚚 SOS from SOCKS! 🛋️

We need at least two strong helpers and a truck to move a large, curved sofa from our Thrift Store (421 Racetrack Rd NE, FWB) to our event space at 498 Carmel Drive — right behind the shelter.

🛋️ Sofa dimensions: 105”W x 32”D x 40”H
An open truck is ideal, as it likely won’t fit in an SUV or closed vehicle.

📅 Deadline: We need it moved by Friday morning!

If you can help, please email [email protected] with your phone number, and she’ll share the details.

Thank you for supporting SOCKS! 💪🐾

UPDATE!

Tuna, the kitten that was thrown into the woods, is doing great and purring like crazy! ❤️

The community came together to care for this little boy after all he went through. We cried happy tears as all the donations and support poured in. You all are amazing. 😽

Tuna is still healing and not yet ready for adoption. We will announce when we're accepting applications.

Again, thank you for all who helped save this sweet, sweet kitten. 🐈‍⬛

Here's the original story:

The dark blue compact car stopped at Willow Bend Boulevard and Schneider Drive in Fort Walton Beach.

A child about 9 years old got out, then threw something into the woods.

A Good Samaritan driving home from work about 5:15 p.m. Monday saw it from a distance. She thought they were dumping trash. She tried to get a license plate number, but the car sped off.

Instead of trash, what they dumped was “a beautiful, wonderful kitty cat,” the Good Samaritan said. “The little black thing” came right up to her, meowing. “How could they do this?”

The male kitten, about five months old, had a fractured tail and pelvis, and the tissue ripped from its lips. He was very hungry.

SOCKS rushed the kitten to the vet. He purred the whole time. His tail had to be amputated, but this sweet boy is on the mend and doing great. Tuna’s medical bill is $703.92

If you’d like to help pay for his treatment, go to https://socks.networkforgood.com/projects/250753-tuna-the-dumped-kitten or reach out to Northside Veterinary Clinic at (850)-862-1005.

“SOCKS isn’t really in a position to take on an injury case like this, but the situation was too awful to turn him away,” said SOCKS Executive Director Nancy Schimmer. “Then, after I learned how it happened, I was even more horrified for this kitten. What are these people teaching their children? I’m just grateful a Good Samaritan saw it and stopped to take care of the kitten.”

As you can see from these photos, where we're having the The Kittucky Derby needs a little cleaning. 🙀

So Kameron Hecker of Clean & Precise Pressure Washing came to our rescue. He's even hanging the "Catnip Downs" banner high up on the building!

Stay tuned to see the sparkling clean results!

We are so thankful for his help - and for him adopting a SOCKS kitty, too!

Our Story

Save Our Cats and Kittens Shelter and Adoption Center was founded in 1995 by Sara DeMonbrun who could not sit by and do nothing while unwanted cats and kittens reproduced and suffered all around us. She started in her home but soon expanded to a small house on Racetrack Road. She started the Thrift Store to ensure there was funding coming in. Eventually incorporated as a 501(c)3 not for profit, SOCKS moved to 498 Carmel Dr in Fort Walton Beach where we now reside. Housing up to 75 cats and kittens, as well as overseeing the foster care of many others, SOCKS now finds permanent homes for 400 cats and kittens per year. While they await their perfect person’s arrival, they are allowed to roam freely and interact with our human guests. The Catio allows them safe access to the outdoors.

SOCKS exists solely on donations and fundraisers as well as the proceeds from our SOCKS Thrift Store located on the same property. We receive no government funding. Volunteers provide much-needed assistance to our few employees.

Our mission is to take in as many unwanted cats and kittens as we safely can, educate the public about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets to avoid overpopulation, provide information and resources for lower cost options, and working with other rescues and shelters, find homes for all of them. Once they come to SOCKS they are always considered part of the SOCKS family. We love them as our own.
