Over the last month, a LARGE outbreak of EEE (eastern equine encephalitis) was identified in BONIFAY, FL. All horses affected displayed rapid development of severe neurological signs, and were subsequently euthanized, or died prior to receiving veterinary intervention.

EEE is one of many mosquito-borne diseases in the southeast, and can affect a variety of species... including humans. The most common signs of EEE infection include: fever, depression, rapid changes of behavior, ataxia (inability to stand/walk), and other forms of neurologic symptoms. This disease is often fatal, with mortality ranging anywhere from 85-95%. However, it is most certainly PREVENTABLE.

It is exceptionally important that your equids, horses and donkeys alike, maintain a state-specific vaccine protocol to mitigate the risk of infection for these diseases.

In the state of Florida, it is recommended that all equid species receive ✨biannual vaccination✨ for mosquito-borne diseases, which include: EEE, WEE, and WNV.

Make sure your vaccinations are up to date.

Attention horse owners: the Florida Department of Agriculture has confirmed a case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a 2 year old Quarter Horse in Jackson County. Unfortunately this horse was euthanized due to its neurological signs. This is the 7th case in Florida for 2021. EEE is almost always fatal when diagnosed. Please make sure your horses are up to date on their vaccinations! Call Emerald Coast Mobile Vet to schedule an appt for vaccines if needed.
