🐕 Training Tip Tuesday 🐾
| Using a Toy as a Reward |
Sometimes it is more practical & stimulating to reward your dog with toys instead of food. Luka’s own obedience training was built with consistent rewards of foods & toys – by changing up the routine (regarding rewards) it helps to keep him mentally stimulated. Dogs that love toys like tennis balls (or like in the video, a frisbee) can be driven by a toy just as well as a treat. This can also be healthier for the dog & more cost effective for the owner. You can even use it as a reward when doing simple commands like “sit” or “lie down”. This type of activated training & toy-based reward system is extremely beneficial with high-energy breeds. Most dogs do not view it as training, but as extra play time. 🥏
Just like any other obedience training, this takes just as much patience & repetition. As you can see, Luka & Ashley have created a stronger bond with this type of communication & are able to achieve higher-level tricks like “weaving” between her legs. So, we encourage you to start slow, practice & consider toy rewards instead of food-based rewards to help garner trust, encourage exercise & build confidence in your dog. In no time you’ll be able to reward your pet with their favorite toy, instead of a handful of treats. 🏆 #TrainingTipTuesday #dogtraining #toysasrewards #trainingyourdog #agility #bordercollie
🐕 TRAINING TIP TUESDAY | ENRICHMENT 🐕
Every dog is unique, and just like their size, breed or even their favorite treats– training is not a one-size-fits-all type of activity. Regular tactics for training may not always be appropriate for every dog. A dog may be stimulated in different ways or lacks confidence in specific tasks. Tailored stimulation and targeted confidence building can start from little steps. Enrichment involves mentally and physically stimulating activities that engage an animal’s mind, body, and senses (e.g., smell, taste, sound, smell, touch).
Exposure to basic enrichment activities to full on obstacle courses to expand their minds. Most high-energy breeds benefit from such enrichment, because it relates well to their instinctual “working dog” mentality. They are already intelligent, so honing their skills (with courses or obstacles) allows them to learn without losing focus. Obstacles courses take practice, so it is a lot of playing (with patience)- in turn it is a good source of exercise for all parties involved. Just like any other training, enrichment courses take multiple tries to get it right!
Apollo is an extremely smart dog, but as you can see that doing a new obstacle course can be challeging even for him - BUT he figured it out!

🐕 TRAINING TIP TUESDAY 🐕
LEARNING RECALL COMMANDS 🐾
Recall is a fundamental command for your dogs to learn early on, not only to create a stronger bond but also so you can use it as a “safe command” in hectic situations. As an owner you can start with small steps inside of a comfortable environment without distractions, using treats as a reward for good “Recall”s – this will help you create a solid foundation. After practicing & comprehension, you can acclimate your pet to larger public areas, like off leash dog parks.
Going from numerous treats, their name, & calling – to just calling out to them when they are out of sight. Recall is simple, but having your dog master it may take many tries & rewards. It takes patience & keeping your dog engaged, so make sure to have plenty of treats on hand! 😅

TRAINING TIP TUESDAY 1/30/24 The "PLACE" Command
TRAINING TIP TUESDAY | Does Your Dog Know Place? 🧐
The “place” command is an essential skill that every dog should master. Any distracting noise, smell or movement should not cause an adverse reaction or lead to disobedience. No matter what may be in their periphery, a dog can learn to relax & focus - understanding that those distractions are not their concern.
Thank you Zeus & Apollo for being such good boys! 💙
