Say it with us...crocodile skinks are so cool!

Similar to their namesake, the red-eyed crocodile skink is covered in thick, leathery skin with bony plates running down their back, like a suit of armor offering protection.

When it's 3 degrees with a real feel of -7 ❄

Winter weather is no match for a North American river otter's thick coat! With two layers of fur to keep them warm, this aquatic mammal is perfectly adapted for colder climates.

The bat-eared fox may be one of the smallest fox species, but they've got an ear up on the competition! Not only do they use their 5-inch long ears to locate insects underground, but this fox's ears also help shed heat easily to stay cool in the African savannas.

To make room for their growing bodies and to remove parasites, snakes shed their skin multiple times a year! Often starting near the head, snakes will rub against something abrasive to tear the skin and start the shedding process. 🐍

Have old Christmas lights you aren't sure what to do with? Recycle them at the Zoo!

From now until January 17, we will be collecting used holiday lights to prevent them from ending up in the landfill. Last year, you all recycled and diverted one thousand pounds of Christmas lights from the landfill! Let's see if we can collect even more this year.

Lights can be dropped off at our Guest Services building between 9 - 5 p.m. weekdays through January 17.

Can you hear me now? πŸ‘‚πŸΌ

With large ears like satellite dishes, eastern grey kangaroos have excellent hearing and often detect predators before they see them! This marsupial can even rotate each ear independently, letting them pick up sounds from many directions.

Happy ! 🦜 Did you know a bird's beak can tell you a lot about their diet? Birds have specialized beaks with unique structures adapted for the food they eat and environment they live in.

Photo 1: A pelican will use its large beak and pouch to scoop up fish from the water.

Photo 2: Using its long, curved beak, a blue-faced honeyeater's preferred snack is nectar and pollen from plants.

Photo 3: The red-tailed hawk's sharp beak helps them catch their food and eat it quickly.

Photo 4: An Indian pygmy goose's short bill with the nail at the end is perfect for pulling aquatic vegetation from the ground.

Photo 5: Turkey vultures have strong, hooked beaks that are useful when consuming carrion.

Ringing in the Gnu Year with some wildebeest glamor shots! 🌟

Did you know wildebeest are also referred to as 'gnus'? Originating from the Khoekhoe language used in various southern African countries, this name likely imitates the grunt-like noises they will sometimes make.
