Did you know hyenas, in addition to catching their own food, are also scavengers? This species is known to consume carrion that other predators have left uneaten. Scavengers play a crucial role in keeping their environment clean and healthy by preventing disease spread!

With their long legs and fantastic hearing, bat-eared foxes are expert hunters! This fox species relies on its ears to hear insect moving underground and their long legs to dig quickly to catch their crawling food.

Greetings from the Mariana Islands! The Fort Wayne Zoo is proud to have three staff members who have traveled across the world to be a part of hands on conservation efforts for the Nosa Luta. Taking their expertise thousands of miles from home, this team has spent nearly three weeks working alongside Pacific Bird Conservation studying behaviors of the bird, its natural environment, and educating the community about their efforts with an amazing animal found only on the island of Rota!

This important work couldn’t be done alone. The Zoo is joined by staff from The Wilds, Saint Louis Zoo, Sedgwick County Zoo, and The Buffalo Zoo to work as one to make a big impact in a short amount of time.

Whether it’s at home or an ocean away, the Fort Wayne Zoo is proud to support conservation efforts far and wide by always keeping our mission in mind: connecting kids and animals, strengthens families, and inspiring people to care.

It's binturong since we've posted this marvelous mammal! ✨

Did you know binturongs are primarily arboreal, meaning they spend most of their time in the treetops? Their semi-retractable claws and prehensile tail help them move nimbly from tree to tree.

A tasselled wobbegong is back at the Fort Wayne Zoo!

Did you know this shark is an expert at camouflaging? With their splotchy coloration and fringed sides, the tasselled wobblegong blends in perfectly with the coral reef. Keep a sharp eye out when you come meet Arlo, the new tasselled wobbegong in the Reef, this 2025 season! 👀

Happy National Kangaroo Awareness Day!

Blink and you'll miss it. 🦘 Is there anything more joey-ful than a joey popping its head out to wish you a happy #NationalKangarooAwarenessDay? At around five and a half months, a joey will poke its head out of its mother's pouch, but only for short periods of time! As they get older, they will begin to hop out of the pouch to explore the world around it. Visit the Kangaroo Yard to learn more about the joeys in our care.
