Each year, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is proud to serve over 600,000 guests who visit from near and far. That’s 600,000 opportunities to educate children and families about wildlife and wild places and inspire them to care about the world around them. Your gift will help ensure that the Zoo is able to continue to be a place where people and animals can connect for many years to come!

If you had the chance to visit the giraffe platform this year, you may have noticed that a shade structure was added as an extension to the roof. The addition was installed to help provide needed shade to the giraffes while they enjoy tasty lettuce! This structure was funded in part by our friends at the Huser Foundation, and several generous donors throughout the community.

However, as with any new structure or habitat change, our tower of giraffes needed a little bit of time to adjust. Early in the season, they were hesitant to approach the platform and needed additional encouragement from our Animal Care team. Animal Care Specialist, Ashlee, shared one of these moments:

"In May, a mother and her young son visited the giraffe platform just I was encouraging the giraffes to come closer for a training session. After successfully engaging our male giraffe, Ezeji, I invited the boy to help feed Ezeji some lettuce. The boy felt a little shy at first, but his confidence and excitement grew as he fed Ezeji one piece after another. The mother was so thankful that her son was able to connect with Ezeji - she shared that this was the third time they had visited the platform that day! As they snapped a few photos with Ezeji, it was clear that this would be a cherished moment for them both."

This , we're celebrating some of the amazing things our donors have helped make happen this year. To kick off the day, we're sharing a bit about the five black-footed penguin chicks you may have seen at the penguin habitat during the Zoo season!

You may have heard that the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recently classified African black-footed penguins as a critically endangered species. However, zoos and aquariums around the world are working to strengthen their population by participating in a Species Survival Plan (SSP), which is coordinated by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA). The Fort Wayne Children's Zoo is taking an active role to help save penguins, and currently has five couples who are paired up through this program.

Over a span of thirteen days in March, penguin chicks Phoenix, Juniper, Coral, Skye, and Perri hatched into the world. Teams all across the Zoo jumped into action to ensure these penguins received the best possible care to prepare them for life beyond the nest.

As these chicks have grown, they have become experts at all sorts of typical penguin behaviors – waddling on the sand, sliding into their pond on their bellies, gliding through the water, and, of course, eating plenty of tasty fish!
