Crunchy Farm

Crunchy Farm Join us as we raise a few chickens, a shepherding pup and introducing, mini goats We'll also attempt to grow stuff we can eat.

We'll brave the packed clay and odd weather conditions. Working to utilize every square inch of viable growing space.

Who wants one? I have only 7 left.

Donate to my Israel fund and I'll they one of these lovelies in the mix.

I penned this devo last August during a super hard time in my life. God gave me some amazing insights that allowed me to rest in Him through a super hard process . Couldn't have done it without Him.

"There are some specific causes that can create a sensitive, weakened nervous system. The first is neurotoxins. Viruses such as Epstein-Barr, shingles, HHV-6, and others release neurotoxins which can cause a host of different sensitivities, symptoms and conditions connected to the nervous system. If any underlying viral issues are not addressed, your nervous system can become hypersensitive.

Toxic heavy metals are a second cause. Mercury is extremely harmful and other metals such as aluminum, lead, arsenic, copper, and nickel wreak havoc as well. An alloy of these metals in the brain can oxidize over time, short circuiting neurotransmitters as they run through the neurons. Imagine the neuron is like a stream and the neurotransmitters are like the living water rushing through. Heavy metals are what block and destroy both the stream and the pulsing energy running through it. Heavy metals diminish neurotransmitter and neuron function, breakdown electrical impulses, and can cause seizures if present in the brain and nervous system for extended periods of time. You can learn more about toxic heavy metals here.

You must stay vigilant to avoid the third cause, MSG. It’s found in many packaged food items these days, even seemingly healthy ones, and hidden behind terms like “natural flavors,” “citric acid,” and “vanilla flavor.” It can even be found in protein shakes and natural herbal teas! MSG eats away at your brain, creates lesions, and breaks down your nervous system, worsening neurological problems."

"People often think that something "far off" will make them happy. That moving to a new place or getting a different job or meeting someone new will change how they feel. But happiness will always be withheld if you believe it is somewhere else. The secret is to find happiness in the people and places that are close to you. See the beauty in the things that are nearby."

This is what we call PASSIVE GARDENING.

Passive gardening is when you use resources you already have, leave them to fend for themselves and go back and harvest food.

Its not much food, but its more than if I hadn't planted the potato scraps in a planter on my patio😁

We're down from 6 to 2 of our original baby chicks. Easter and Luna are the two that survived. I'm not so sure Easter isn't a roo though and we aren't allowed to have those here😕

This isn't our first rodeo. We've done this twice before and only lost one. And I'm not sure how strong that one was from TSC.

This time we enjoyed the help of a friend who raised beautiful healthy chicks. This time it was my fault🤦‍♀️

This time I used the pine pellets I use for my goats thinking, or maybe not thinking, that they would be a great option. I reasoned that the vitamin C in the pine would keep any parasites away and boost their immune system.

I didn't consider that I hadn't given them any grit yet to breakdown the wood saw dust and that the amount they ingested might be too much for their little bodies to handle😭 we're heart broken. Rookie mistake😕

But we're going to try again, armed with more knowledge and I little bit more grace and humility.

Have a very small flock. Decided to add 6 more chicks. They've been doing great for 2 weeks. All the sudden, yesterday we lost 3 within hours of each other.

They all acted drunk and did this same wabbling motion. One had super bad pasty butt so we cleaned her up and nursed her. She seemed like she was getting better and then just had some convulsions and passed.

We've had chickens for 6 years and I've never seen this. What's going on?

The photo on the left is a Karakachan or Bulgarian sheep dog.

The photo on the right is our dog Max.

We were told that Max is an Anatolian Pyrenees mix. In researching the traits an AP seemed more suited to our mini farm because they don't require a ton of space or exercise.

Karakachan's on the other hand require more space and a ton of exercise.

The breeder was adamant that Max is an Anatolian Pyrenees and I'm sure that , to the best of their knowledge, they believe that to be true.

A little investigation revealed that the same litter of pups can have more than one sire. In other words, they might not have the same baby daddy 🥴

After 2 and a half years it's clear that our pup's demeanor and physical traits line up more with with these bear dogs than they do with that of an Anatolian or Great Pyr.

We love our Max and have no plans to re-home him. He's doing great however over enthusiastically.

My point here, is that there has been a great deal of frustration in our home because we were expecting him to be something He's not.

We did our research and prepped the best we could with information we had, but it seems that our expectations were rooted in something other than reality.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: There's actually a great deal of peace in knowing the truth even though it's a little uncomfortable.

My dad has bees.Today I went to his house and he showed me all of the honey he had gotten from the hives. He took the lid off of a 5 gallon bucket full of honey and on top of the honey there were 3 little bees, struggling. They were covered in sticky honey and drowning. I asked him if we could help them and he said he was sure they wouldn't survive. Casualties of honey collection I suppose.
I asked him again if we could at least get them out and kill them quickly, after all he was the one who taught me to put a suffering animal (or bug) out of its misery. He finally conceded and scooped the bees out of the bucket. He put them in an empty Chobani yogurt container and put the plastic container outside.
Because he had disrupted the hive with the earlier honey collection, there were bees flying all over outside.
We put the 3 little bees in the container on a bench and left them to their fate. My dad called me out a little while later to show me what was happening. These three little bees were surrounded by all of their sisters (all of the bees are females) and they were cleaning the sticky nearly dead bees, helping them to get all of the honey off of their bodies. We came back a short time later and there was only one little bee left in the container. She was still being tended to by her sisters.
When it was time for me to leave we checked one last time and all three of the bees had been cleaned off enough to fly away and the container was empty.
Those three little bees lived because they were surrounded by family and friends who would not give up on them, family and friends who refused to let them drown in their own stickiness and resolved to help until the last little bee could be set free.
Bee Sisters. Bee Peers. Bee Teammates.
We could all learn a thing or two from these bees.
Bee kind always.~
