Meet our summer interns!
Preston (left) is a high school student from Fort Worth with a passion for food systems and social justice. Preston loves baseball and is thinking about studying environmental studies after his senior year.
Demitri (right) is a horticulture major from El Paso. Demitri currently has his own production garden back at home and is hoping to continue pursuing his dream of growing and selling sustainable produce to his local community.
Preston and Demitri will be on the farm this summer learning all aspects related to production, food distribution, and alleviating food insecurity here in Fort Worth.
Come out and say hi!
We will be at Cowtown Farmers Market tomorrow from 8am-12pm with lots of summer favorites! All local and delicious!
Great day! We had a ton of fun working and learning with y'all!
Happy Juneteenth! Today, we are thankful to celebrate Freedom alongside friends and family.
Juneteenth is a special time, especially at Opal’s Farm. We were founded by the Grandmother of Juneteenth herself, Dr. Opal Lee alongside the magnificent work of Unity Unlimited back in 2019. Our work aims to preserve the legacy of Freedom by alleviating food insecurity within Fort Worth communities through local food production and education.
Thank you to everybody who has helped and supported the farm, Juneteenth, and the work of Dr. Opal Lee! Have a fun and safe Juneteenth celebration with loved ones!

Greetings from Opal’s Farm. We will not be at Cowtown Farmers Market this week. The busy Spring planting season came to a bit of a halt this morning. The rain that came in overnight has been great …
We've been trying to tell you this. Now the science backs it up.
Almost across the board—regardless of the farm type or location—researchers found that the more diversification strategies a farm employs, the more win-win outcomes they rack up.
We will be at tomorrow from 8am-12pm. Come by and say hello!!!

Those are some gorgeous weeds!!!! We plant wildflowers on the farm for many great reasons. Our flower beds improve soil health, bring in pollinators, increase diversity, help with water quality, and create beautiful landscapes! How many species can you identify? #flowers #flowergarden #plants #spring #springintexas
it's tomato planting time! Depending on how much of a risk taker you are, folks generally prefer to plant tomatoes anytime between mid-March and mid-April in north Texas right before or after the last frost date. We planted our tomatoes March 18th-20th! We prepare 100-foot beds and add compost before laying weed fabric. The furrows or trenches between each bed are mulched heavily to suppress weeds, hold water, and slowly release nutrients over a long period. We burn 6-inch holes in the weed fabric every 2 feet before digging out holes for each tomato plant. A handful of slow-release organic fertilizer is added to the hole before planting and filling. #tomatoes #tomatoplanting #tomatoseason #tomatofarming #localproduce #fortworthfarming #gardening #farmlife
Quick update on what's been going on at Opal's Farm! We are preparing for the Spring and summer season by getting beds ready! We will be planting beans, peas, cucumbers, okra, and lots of tomatoes by the first of April! Big shout out to Reading Partners North Texas and CIEE for all your help in making the farm look great! We will be at Cowtown Farmers Market tomorrow from 8am-12pm selling lots of veggies! Come say hi! Reminder - March 18th is our tomato planting day. We'd love for y'all to volunteer and get to know the farm! #localfood #community #springgrowing #summerfarming #okra #tomatoes #regenerativeagriculture #fortworthfarms
We've gotten some great recipe ideas from our customers lately on what to do with our produce. Here is a "How-to" for southern greens using Opal's mustards and turnips. The pork comes from a local farm and friend First Earth Farm. Recipe inspiration comes from "I Heart Recipes" at the link here. https://iheartrecipes.com/southern-mixed-greens-turnips/ #southerngreens #localproduce #community #cowtownfarmersmarket #turnips #asiangreens

Ever wondered how we prep our biointensive beds at the farm? Here is a simple step-by-step guide through the process. We do not use heavy machinery in our biointensive fields. This helps limit soil compaction and heavy tillage. We do this to build soil health and structure so that our produce is healthy and nutrient-dense. This is an excellent way for new farmers/gardeners with limited acreage to start growing food for themselves and their communities. #regenerativeagriculture #community #soilhealth #fortworth #opalsfarm #localproduce
