We have a very special dog that is finally ready for adoption after 7 long months of treatment. Suzanne came to us from Fort Worth Animal Care and Control where she was listed as urgent because of an upper respiratory infection. Turned out, she also had an eye issue called entropion which we surgically repaired.

She also had very little tear production, and so had constantly irritated eyes. We spent most of this year trying different treatments and consulting with an eye specialist. She is a very sweet dog (see the picture of her sharing the back seat with a toddler), but she does have chronic dry eye which will require eye drops for the rest of her life. The eye drops are not expensive, but she will need the type of adopter that understands and accepts that she has a chronic medical condition. If you know anyone that’s looking for a standard poodle, good with kids and ok her medical needs, tell them about Suzanne!

We got this baby from Fort Worth Animal Care and Control with severe gastrointestinal issues… very loose bloody stool. She is just cute as the dickens, and we will get her pooping regular as a Swiss train in no time!

This little fellow came to us as a stray. We checked him into stray hold at the city shelter, but while he was there he jumped out of a kennel tech’s arms and broke his leg. That earned him the name Icarus. We were given a treatment plan that gave us the option of amputation or bringing in a surgical specialist to plate the leg. We would prefer to repair the leg rather than amputate it, but it will cost $1,500. That’s where you come in… help us give Icarus a surgically repaired leg for Christmas! Even if you can only afford to donate a few dollars, every dollar counts… and if you can afford to donate a bunch of dollars, even better! Please donate and share… help us help Icarus!

This little dog's story, after more than a month at Fort Worth Animal Care and Control, underscores the difficulties anxious dogs face in high volume shelters. He did not want to be handled by either potential adopters or the shelter staff. He has really come out of his shell quickly in a quieter, lower traffic environment.

He serves as a reminder that love and kindness and understanding someone’s needs can break down barriers, a particularly relevant lesson during the holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving!

A generous donor contacted us about helping these two dogs at Fort Worth Animal Control. Hawkeye was in “pre lab,” meaning he was scheduled to be euthanized today. He has some old (3-4 months ago) injuries including an eye that needs to be removed and a broken pelvis.

Holly has no medical issues, she had just run out of time.

This little girl came to us as a stray. She was in terrible condition, and Fort Worth Animal Care and Control shaved her down during her stray hold period, at which point a significant corneal ulcer was discovered. So now that she’s back with us she’s getting treatment!

The Animal Hope “lobby dogs” are bundled up for the cooler weather! Our original “lobby dog,” Blue, was such a great spokesman for our mission that we’ve integrated several others over the years.

Eve came to us from Mansfield Animal Control 7 years ago with some skin issues and pneumonia. A lot of people don’t like chihuahuas and her job is to show people that chihuahuas are great dogs, too!

Charlie came to us from Fort Worth Animal Care and Control with chronic eye issues.

And Guinefort originally came to us from Cleburne Animal Control in 2015. We adopted him out almost 10 years ago but he was returned from adoption 6 months ago.

The fine folks at the Panther City Wine Social aren’t just passionate about fine wines, they’ve got a heart for animals too. So when they offered us a 1992 Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill to help this baby, Stevie, that had been abandoned with one of their members… well how could we say no?

Some of the members of the group expressed a desire to donate towards her care, so here she is guys!

This little fellow jumped out of a kennel tech’s arms while on stray hold and broke his leg. And before stray hold he was found running loose in a Walmart parking lot, so with a string of bad luck like that we are confident things will turn around soon. Animal control named him Icarus, maybe because he flew too close to the sun on wings made of dog fur and broke his leg :D

We always ask our adopters to send us update pictures because it helps us to know that they are making the dog happy and the dog is making them happy. In many ways, the animal we adopt out is a gift wrapped package because the dog we send out the door isn’t what the dog becomes months down the road. Our adopters are our partners in the rescue process because of how they shape what the animal turns into.

Seth was a shy pit/schnauzer that came to us from Benbrook Animal Control. You can see how shy from one of the pics below (see him peeking at us from behind the door at Benbrook?). He was at our facility for exactly 100 days waiting for the right family, but that family was worth the wait.

Now called Re*****on, Seth has left that shy teenage puppy he was behind and is the December dog in a 2025 pet calendar. Looking good, buddy!

Ever wondered how “it takes a village” to save a dog? It occurs to me that we frequently post which shelters animals in these medical albums came from, but we have never explained how it happens. So we thought we would use this dog as an example.

His name is currently Surprise Me, because when one of my teammates asked what name to enter in our shelter system I said “Surprise me.” Ha ha, good one, Chelsea.

So a Fort Worth Animal Control officer found this little fellow with severe dog attack wounds “in the field.” That doesn’t mean the dog was laying in a cornfield or meadow or something, it just means an animal control officer found him and brought him to the shelter rather than a concerned citizen.

As the dog is processed into Fort Worth Animal Control, the shelter’s medical staff notifies the shelter’s outbound team that the dog needs more medical help than the shelter can provide. The outbound team consists of four people at each shelter campus whose entire job is to get animals out of the shelter, either through foster, rescue transfer, or rescue transport out of state. The outbound team know the area rescues and know which ones are likely to take which types of animals and which types of medical cases. So we got a call about this baby, we had medical resources available so we went and picked him up.

Our partner hospital got to work, and as you can see from the radiology report Surprise Me has a broken scapula, and soft tissue injuries in addition to his external injuries.

Surprise Me is technically on stray hold, and if an owner comes forward in the next 96 hours Fort Worth Animal Care and Control will contact us so we can facilitate reclaim, but this process ensures that the dog is able to get medical attention.

Now Fort Worth is a pretty big city with a well funded animal control, but even the much smaller cities in DFW follow a similar process… it’s just often the animal control officers doing all the steps in those smaller shelters.

This is why we get frustrated when well meaning members of the public call our municipal colleagues “dog catchers” or say that all animal control does is “murder” animals.

This little fellow, Olaf, came to us as a stray from Fort Worth Animal Care and Control with bilateral cherry eye and matted down to the skin. I completely forgot to document his condition before his surgery and groom for our medical album, so just pretend he looks a lot worse in these pictures
