As we have walked through heartworm disease this month, we have learned about how they spread, how to prevent, and how they affect cats and dogs differently. Sadly the spread of heartworms has only increased over the years. Homeless pet populations and pets not on prevention are direct contributors to that spread. In this loop we have included infographics that show how heartworm infections have spread and worsened over the past decade and a half. We have included maps from 2010, 2016, and 2022. More maps are available to view on the American heartworm Society's webpage (https://www.heartwormsociety.org)

Cats are not exempt from heartworms. It is not common for them to contract heartworms, but there is still risk. There is no safe treatment for heartworm disease in cats, and survival of heartworm disease is very rare. Thankfully heartworm disease is completely preventable with a monthly parasite prevention. Swipe through to learn more!

Heartworm awareness month continues! πŸŽ‰πŸΆ Today, we are learning about heartworms and why we test your dogs yearly. Mosquitos 🦟🦟 are a constant nuisance in our area. Texas stays comparatively warm year-round, and this means that mosquitos and, in conjunction, heartworms are a year-round problem and risk. It is essential that your dog remains on monthly heartworm prevention all year long. Heartworm disease is preventable with appropriate monthly parasite prevention, but as we all know, nothing in life is 100% guaranteed. We always want to monitor your dog yearly and ensure they remain heartworm negative. If they ever test positive, we want to intervene as quickly as possible to treat the present infection and avoid any complications arising from a heartworm infection, such as heart or lung damage. If your pet needs a prevention refill, jump to our website and submit your request today using the prescription refill form

As the weather warms up, outdoor activities are becoming more frequent. Hikes, walks, and lake days are coming, and that means increased exposure to ticks! Ticks carry diseases that are harmful to not only us, but our four legged furry family members as well. Protecting them year round with a flea-tick prevention is vital to ensure they are protected from these diseases. If your dog or cat is in need of a parasite prevention refill submit your request on our website here (https://bit.ly/3valfrE) or contact us for an appointment to see what prevention is right for your pet (https://bit.ly/3zMuBcl)

As prey animals cats have an engrained instinct to hide weaknesses that can put them at risk from predators. They hide injuries, pain, and illness, and they do it really well. Often times it is not apparent something is wrong until it is severe. This is one of many reasons why it is so important to take your cat in for wellness exams on a yearly basis at the very least, ideally biannual exams. Regular exams and diagnostic labs help to ensure we are monitoring your cats overall wellness closely and are able to discover concerns and intervene early before they become major issues.

There are so many reasons to choose Fear Free veterinary care. Not only do we focus on creating a low stress experience for both you and your pet, but we also provide care in such a way that your pet is a willing participant in their veterinary services.

Using techniques such as touch gradient helps to disguise needle pricks, and a treat reward helps to reinforce their participation. Positive reinforcement is a big part of what we do at Summer Creek Animal Clinic. We use a reward ladder of treats to help make your pet feel more comfortable while they are here. Starting with a low reward like cheerios for more comfortable services such as getting their weight, and working our way up to higher rewards like whipped cream or squeeze cheese for the less comfortable services like vaccines.

Starting with the cheerios means that the whipped cream will be more rewarding for the services your pet may find more difficult. A high reward acts as a positive reinforcement for their participation. Using the reward ladder helps the negative experiences seem less scary and stressful for your pet, which means their next visit is less likely to be stressful and scary as well.

Why do we recommend bringing your pet in twice yearly for biannual wellness exams? -- Routine wellness visits are a great way to help your pet live a healthy life for as long as possible. Biannual wellness exams include nose to tail physical exams, vaccinations, and diagnostic labs. These help to ensure your pet is healthy and monitors them regularly for changes or concerns as they age. This may help detect potential health issues early and helps ensure early intervention if one does arise. If your pet is in need of a wellness exam call us Monday - Friday to schedule with one of our Fear Free Certified Veterinarians.

Fear Free care focuses not only on the physical wellbeing of your pet, but their emotional wellbeing as well, it is a whole body approach to your pets healthcare. Stress affects our pets' physical health the same as it does ours. Elevated stress levels can result in less accurate physical exams, and inaccurate test results. With the Fear Free approach your pet will be more comfortable overall as we strive to ensure they are not exposed to extended periods of stress. This results in a much better experience for your pet, and a much happier relationship with the vet clinic for your pet.

Regular urine tests can help in the early detection of kidney issues with your cat, along with other recommended lab work values your veterinarian uses to monitor kidney function. While early detection will not reverse or stop kidney disease, it will certainly slow the progression of age related kidney disease and can help to extend the quality of your pets life. Cats are prone to developing kidney issues in later life, so it is especially important to do regular urinalysis and monitor those other lab values in their senior years to watch for these changes. If you have concerns or would like to speak with a veterinarian give our office a call to schedule a consult today.

Have you ever wondered what a f***l analysis (or f***l) checks for, or why we recommend puppies get at least 2 done at such a young age, or that adult dogs have one done every 6 months?

Fecals check for a multitude of intestinal parasites, all of which are communicable to your other pets, and some of which can be communicable to immune compromised individuals, children under 5 years of age, and adults over 65 years of age. Hookworms, Roundworms, Flea Tapeworms, Whipworms, Giardia, and Coccidia are the parasites we check for at Summer Creek Animal Clinic.

Sometimes a parasitic infection in your dog can be asymptomatic, but this does not mean that other pets or people are not at risk of infection. Other times a parasitic infection can lead to minor symptoms such as diarrhea, or more serious complications such as damage to your pets digestive tract, severe dehydration, or even death if left untreated.

Biannual f***l analysis helps to monitor for adult parasites and their eggs, as well as helps to ensure your pet stays parasite free. A monthly Flea - Tick prevention, such as Simparica Trio or Simparica, can also help to keep your pet parasite free, but it is still important to test regularly and ensure these medications are working as intended. If you have questions concerns that your pet may have a parasitic infection call our clinic today and we can get you in for a consultation and f***l analysis.

As we go about our spring cleaning, it’s important to remember that some products can be toxic for our four legged friends. Ensuring that spills are cleaned up promptly and floors are completely dry prior to letting your pets back into freshly cleaned areas, will help keep your pets safe from accidental exposures.

Many of us may consider using natural products for cleaning, such as vinegar and water solutions, but even these should be used with caution. Ingestion of concentrated, or even diluted, vinegar can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and oral irritation for pets.

The ASPCA and Pet Poison Helpline websites have some great articles that share products and things to consider when keeping pets safe from household cleaners.

If you have a concern that your pet may have ingested a toxic or poisonous product call one of the pet poison helplines and head to our clinic or the nearest emergency clinic right away.

In 2022 the ASPCA pet poison hotline fielded 401,550 cases. Accidental pet poisonings are a serious health concern in the veterinary world. It's National Spay Your Pet Day, and Georgia wants to talk to you about all the benefits of spaying your dogs and cats.

Did you know that spaying your dog doesn't just prevent accidental breeding? It can also help prevent the development of cancers as they age as well as a life threatening condition called pyometra.

At Summer Creek Animal Clinic we offer two different spay surgical procedures. One is a traditional spay procedure. This consists of a 2 inch to 4 inch incision and a 10 to 14 day healing time. The other option we offer is a laparoscopic procedure that consists of 3 small incisions (an inch or less) and a 7 to 10 day healing time. Check out our website for more information on spays. You can go here (https://bit.ly/42Njz3u) for general spay information canines, here (https://www.summercreekvet.com/services/cats/spay-neuter) for felines, and here (https://bit.ly/42SR4BM) for information on laparoscopic procedures for canines. You can also contact our clinic if you have any other questions or would like to schedule a consult.

As mentioned in a previous post, getting your pet used to tooth brushing can take time and work. Start slowly by introducing the toothpaste to get them used to the taste. You can simultaneously introduce them to the toothbrush when introducing the toothpaste, just allow them to lick the toothpaste off the toothbrush to help them get used to the texture. You can then start getting them used to you lifting their lip and having something rub against their gums. Start with your finger first and slowly work your way up to using the toothbrush. As you go about each step use a clicker and/or positive reinforcement to help reinforce the toothbrushing.

Once your pet is comfortable with the toothbrush in their mouth you can go about brushing the outside of their teeth! Daily brushing is such an important step to your pet maintaining a healthy mouth.
