It has long been known certain breeds/colors of dogs may carry a gene mutation causing them to be sensitive to medications and parasite preventatives that most dogs can metabolize just fine. It has recently been determined that a small % of cats can also have this mutation. If you have a cat who has seemingly had an odd reaction to medications that are atypical or would like to know if your cat has this mutation, WSU performs a test that is easy- just requires a cheek swab.

A female cat can give birth to kittens with different fathers in the same litter through a phenomenon called superfecundation.
This happens because a cat’s heat cycle allows her to release multiple eggs, each capable of being fertilized by s***m from different males.
If she mates with several tomcats during that time, each egg may be fertilized by a different father.
This is why kittens from the same litter can look very different in color, size, or pattern.
Superfecundation is fairly common in cats and contributes to their genetic diversity.

Halloween sneaks up fast, and while we’re pulling out costumes and candy, our cats are picking up on all the new sounds and smells that come with it. A ringing doorbell, strangers at the door, crinkly wrappers, and bright lights—it’s a lot for even the bravest cat. This month, we’re sharing ways to help your cat stay relaxed through the commotion. Learn what small changes can keep stress low, which decorations and treats to steer clear of, and a few fun (and safe) ways to let your cat join the celebration. Because Halloween should be full of treats, not tricks—for them and for you. Info: https://catfriendly.com/cat-friendly-homes/holiday-safety/
