ATTENTION, ATTENTION!! BP Training and Diamond Pet CPR Training have combined forces and created The Frontline Coalition. This change allows us to offer new and improved in person and online classes. The BIGGEST change is we are officially a training center with ASHI and certified with American Heart Association to offer human cpr and first aid training, along with Pet Tech certified to offer Pet CPR & First Aid classes and instructor certification classes. We will also be offering wellness topics, such as pet nutrition, reiki, pemf sessions, emergency preparedness and more. You likely have a first aid kit in the house for your family, why not add a few pet essentials to the tools? These include non-stick bandages, Milk of Magnesia, tweezers and a magnifying glass.

It's summertime and the pavement is hot -- as much as 60 degrees warmer than the air temperature. If you can't hold your hand on the pavement for 7-10 seconds without discomfort, it's too hot for your dog's feet. Find a grass or dirt-covered area to exercise instead, or invest in some dog booties if you can't avoid walking on pavement.

Is it cracked, splintered or ragged? It might be time to throw it away. Toys that have seen better days may be a sentimental favorite, but they're also a choking hazard. Be sure to inspect your dog's toys regularly. For safety's sake, when in doubt, throw it out!

According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.3 million dogs enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of that number, 670,000 are reunited with their owners, 1.6 are adopted and the rest, unfortunately, are euthanized. Those of us who have adopted a shelter pet know what value they bring to our lives -- comfort, security, and friendship, to name a few. And so today, we happily celebrate National Rescue Dog Day!

May is Chip Your Pet month, and something we can totally get behind. According to the American Humane Society, as many as one of every three pets becomes lost at some point in their lifetime. If that happens to you, you can increase the chances of being reunited with your pet by making sure your pet is microchipped. This permanent ID is no bigger than a grain of rice and less costly than a month's supply of food, but the peace of mind it brings you is priceless.

On this International Guide Dog Day, we give thanks to all of the guide dogs who take the lead in giving visually-impaired and blind individuals independence and freedom. While we're at it, thanks also to the experienced men and women who train these dogs and match them to their owners.

Contrary to popular opinion, dog p**p isn't fertilizer. The bacteria and parasites it contains can actually pollute rivers, streams and lakes, causing death and disease to fish and other wildlife if not disposed of properly. Do your part and pick up after your pet. It's the environmentally-friendly thing to do!

Making sure your pet has proper identification will make it a lot less stressful for both of you should they ever become lost. This week, make sure your pet's identification tags are current and easy to read. If he has a microchip, have it scanned periodically to make sure it's still working.

April 11-17 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. As a responsible pet owner, you can help prevent your dog from biting by 1) exposing your dog to people and animals so it feels comfortable in different situations, 2) using a leash in public so you have control over your dog's behavior, and 3) educating your family about how to approach a dog.

Chocolate bunnies are a sweet treat to find in your Easter basket, but did you know chocolate is very toxic for dogs? If your pup accidentally finishes off the last of the goodies in your basket, be sure to contact your veterinarian immediately. Signs of chocolate poisoning usually occur within 6-12 hours after eating and can include vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, elevated heart rate and, in extreme cases, seizures and even death.
