OMEPRAZOLE - is only proven healing treatment. NO supplements “heal” active gut ulcers.

Hello! 👋
Just an announcement that AKEF, llc is no longer taking in new boarders.
The lovely group I have now is my last.
I’ve been boarding (different locations/ started in Maryland) since 1978! Been boarding at my current location since @ 1992.
I’m OLD and tired. 😆 😝
Love EVERY horse that has crossed my path! (And there’s been A LOT!!!) 😉❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

There are SO, SO, SO (TOO) many factors that can contribute to laminitis / founder of the horse hoof.

It is NOT a only a fat horse / spring lush grass situation!

Lamitis onset can be (not all inclusive, however major situations to note. Can be one or more…):
Insulin dysregulation
Acute illness (varying)
Dietary indiscretion
Mechanical founder
Steroid induced laminitis
Cushings!
Having a predisposed breed
Hormonal disorder(s)
STRESS!
Obesity
Hard surface work (road founder)
Exposure to black walnut shavings
The time of the day that your predisposed horse gets to graze
The age of your horse. (*we all slow down / metabolisms too, as we age!)
Unfortunately there is a lot more that could be added to this list!

Some studies have shown that June – August and Dec. – February grasses can be as much as 4x higher risk than March – May spring grasses.

And once your horse founders – it is much more susceptible to recurrent episodes!

A farrier day at AKEF, on the special special needs group. I am so incredibly proud of how these 3 OLD guys did today. SO SO patient for a long process of pour in pads, reverse shoe(s), hospital plate and more!
Very very happy that we have Lucas Huff as one of our farriers at AKEF! Awesome job!

And special hugs to my Al who tries so hard being in as much pain as he is in.
Also pictured is Daniel, Lucas’ apprentice. 👍🏻🙂

I see so many farms/boarding barns online stating mandatory ‘rotational’ deworming every 6 weeks...!...😳
NO NO NO .... they are OVER doing it. Can make worms resistant.

I am currently rehabbing a little mare with MULTIPLE issues right now, one thing is she has life-long ERU. While the jury is out for a 100% definitive cause, most research and professional opinions show a huge culprit to be Leptospirosis!
I strongly suggest that you talk with your vet about adding Leptospirosis Vaccine to your horses’ yearly vaccines. (Treating ERU is no fun at all!) Especially if you have a horse that doesn’t want his/her eyes messed with! I’m very lucky that this little mare is a SUPER TROOPER! This can be very painful for your horse so banamine is usually part of the 6-8 day treatment every time it flares.

I urge you to read this article and any others you can find. Then talk with your vet!

ERU is a major contributor to horse blindness and or need for eye removal surgery.
And please note not all horses’ eyes will look like images below or on the net. They all present differently.
