Read. That. Again.
Having a barrel horse doesn’t mean you’re entitled to be running.
Barrel horses are athletes. They need to be treated like one. I think people often forget how essential it is to be prepping your horse to run months out from that first race back. Making sure your horse is getting the proper conditioning it needs isn’t just important, it’s essential to your horses health, short and long term.
Running is something that needs to be earned. Conditioning, time, effort and consistency is what gets you there.
“Conditioning” refers to the process of preparing a horse’s body for the physical demands of work and/or competition.
Proper conditioning enhances aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance, joint flexibility, and overall performance while reducing wear and tear on the horse’s body.
The most important thing? Consistency.
Regular training is critical to success. Gaps in your conditioning schedule can lead to loss of fitness and increased injury risk.
Why do so many horses get injuries in their off months? The lack of bone and joint strength from zero work.
The reason proper conditioning is so important? Conditioning strengthens bones and connective tissues, helping your horses withstand physical stress. It also helps improves lung function by enhancing airflow and oxygen delivery. Fit horses breathe more easily and recover faster after exercise.
High-intensity sports like barrel racing demand specific skills and advanced conditioning.
It can take weeks or months of consistent work (thats been increased correctly) to reach peak condition.
So that race in two months from today you want to go to? You need to start conditioning now. Not a month out, or a couple weeks. Now.
