"So, Adam... how far have you come as a trainer?"
Well... today Flash nailed me in the inner upper arm and I just cued Scatter and walked away.
To have this level of self control in that level of pain?
Good mechanics not only teach consistency to your dog but they teach consistency to you.
An error occurred and just like with any other error, i cued a "calming" reinforcement strategy and walked away to think about what led to that error.
To do that whole in pain? Heck yeah. I came a long way indeed.
Consulted with @downtoearthdoglady yesterday and spent some time today practicing some location specific marker signals with Haymitch.
So far we have:
- thumbs up: general yes cue
- closed fist out up the side: I'm throwing a cookie to chase
- pinched fingers closer to my body: come take food from my hand

It seems as though Haymitch has some hearing deficit so until I get to BAER testing him, I'll be working on teaching both verbal and signal reward markers.
In the first clip, I'm teaching a verbal "Jackpot" cue, meaning we race to a reinforcement stash.
In the second clip, I am teaching a push up sit and I'm playing with a thumbs up 👍🏼 marker cue.
I have a consult scheduled with @the_doglady to learn a bit more about training with deaf dogs - gotta consult your cabinets when you're faced with a puzzle outside your scope!

Doing nothing about puppy biting and how it's going:
He falls asleep in under 2 minutes and forgets about my toes which were incredibly chompable.
Not gonna lie, this moment tested my patience a bit
Not much, actually.
Puppy is teething and I am patient. I know this is a phase they tend to grow out of with thoughtful and considerate handling.
He's going to be big and powerful and the last thing I want to teach him is that putting his teeth on me gets any reaction whatsoever - I don't even want a potential trade for a toy to be on his radar!
I want biting me to be meaningless. And besides, this was cute, snuggly, bonding time I spent with Mitchy this morning 🤷🏽♀️ why would I discourage that? He wasn't being intentionally bitey, he wasn't trying to get a reaction from me ... he was just nomming.
And then, about 45-60s into his nomming, he remembered his snuffle mat and that was that.
No intimidation, no fear, no accidental behavior chains.
Model the energy you want your dog to show up with rather than responding with what they gave you, and you'll be a happier dog guardian!

Training multiple dogs can be SUCH a hassle.
I hate putting dogs away to train just one so it's important to me that all dogs know how to chill on a station while one is working. Ideally, Eugene, the Aussie, would be further away from the work (and Wibble's reinforcement) but I didn't feel like digging out my manners minder to work on his stationing at a distance.
Notice his rate of reinforcement stays pretty high - almost as high as Wibble's for actually working.
Flash is very experienced at stationing while I work other dogs ans technically didn't *need* this high a rate of reinforcement but I was feeding him thus for a couple of reasons:
1. He and Eugene are currently on an integration plan and part of that looks like perceived fairness for the two.
2. He's a VERY good boy and deserves all the cookies.
I lowered my criteria for Wibble's back up so I could focus on making sure Gene was staying put.
One would think this was Wibble's session but in reality... it was Gene's 😉

Integration is going well. First time in shared indoor space and they chose play.
Yes I chose to have no barriers of safety (no muzzles or tethers) and this was an informed decision.
If you're going through intra-household issues or integration issues, seek an experienced behavior consultant to help you through them. This isn't something to DIY.
Not only do I have experience working cases like this, but I also have a cabinet of trainers in my corner who I trust and can rely on to help me make sure this is a successful integration.
This was their first time sharing indoor space freely since meeting last August. They've had plenty of good experiences in outdoor shared spaces. They were lovely together.
This will also be the last time they share indoor space freely for a while. You know what they say about too much of a good thing...
