There's a dirty little secret in our industry. This stuff is hard on a person. It's hard on their family. I personally know 8 trainers who quit training in the last several years. All are talented and hard working and fed up. Su***de rates in the ranching/farrier/training communities are rising at an alarming rate. You may remember that I had a podcast with an ambassador from Not One More Vet, an organization aiming at su***de prevention in the veterinary community, which is the highest of any profession.
I've been asked to participate in the inaugural "Buck the Trend" mental health forum. It's about a month away and I'll be reporting back with what I learned and my take aways. Despite receiving a grant and some donations, the expenses for putting this event on are still not covered.
If you feel it in your heart, I believe this is a worthy cause to support and I'm putting my time and money behind it. If you'd like to learn more or donate to the non-profit check the comments. You can buy a t-shirt for $30 or donate more and still get the t-shirt. If you want to offer support but don't need another t-shirt, that's an option too.

Deputy Tasha Higbee with Summit County Sheriff's Office was diagnosed with a brain tumor on November 10.7023. Taesha underwent surgery on November 14 2023, her medical team was only able to remove part of the tumor. This was a sudden diagnosis, and the exact nature of the tumor is still being determined; what is known is that she has a long road to recovery.⁠

Taesha is our School Resource Officer for the North Summit School District and one of our only female defensive tactics instructors. Taesha is dedicated to this profession, our community, and the students in North Summit. There has never been a time when Tasha was asked to do something that she did not do right the first time and to the absolute best of her ability, often setting the bar for everyone around her. She is kind, caring, thoughtful, and represents the best of our profession!

Ok so here’s the deal. I had a friend Lindy Sternlight ask me if there were any community Christmas events happening before Christmas. Since I didn’t know of any between now and then we decided to make our own. Any horse folks who would like to join, we are going to go caroling/visiting around the community horse back. I’m not much of a singer so we need some help. Plan is for mid morning/ early afternoon on Christmas Eve. This is spontaneous and not a big formal production but we thought it would be a great way to celebrate Christmas and bring folks together. If you’re in let me know and we can iron out details.

National Day Of The Horse! All the work accomplished, all the memories made, all the lessons learned, all the friendships made! We are grateful for the fine horses, good friends, and good clients we have had the opportunity to work with. Where would we be without the horse in our lives?

On December 21, the Summit Lodge #20 Fraternal Order of Police is hosting a Benefit Concert for Deputy Taesha Higbee at the DeJoria Center in Kamas. Come enjoy live music and enter the raffle for your chance to win some great prizes. For anyone wishing to donate items for the raffle, we will have two collection sites – the Summit County Sheriff’s Office or the Coalville Courthouse Human Resources Office (donation deadline is December 20). All proceeds will go to Taesha for her road to recovery. Doors open at 6:00PM. We hope to see you there!

A rare but needed quality in todays world

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 "𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱" 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻?

In contemporary usage, the phrase "riding for the brand" is often applied to a situation where someone is loyal to a team, company or organization.

But the phrase, unsurprisingly, has roots in the cowboy culture of the American West. It refers to the unwavering loyalty and commitment cowboys had to their ranches or outfits. Cowboys were expected to work hard, protect the ranch's assets and uphold the ranch's reputation.

In ranching circles, "riding for the brand" is a calling of high order. It means more than just doing your job; it means taking pride in your work, being willing to go the extra mile and never giving up, even when faced with adversity.

In the words of Red Steagall, from his poem "Ride for the Brand:"

Make plans to be in Francis City next week! We are kicking off the week with a horsemanship clinic with Fly 'n O Horsemanship followed by a trail competition Friday, then an outstanding show by Brenn Hill and Andy Nelson Friday evening. The Brenn and Andy show is sponsored by Red Arrow Ranch Utah and The 5 Seventeen company, Trent Martinez so admission is free. There will be local live entertainment Saturday along with Breakfast a fun horse show and other activities followed by an RMPRA Rodeo by Circle J Rodeo which will include skydivers by Skydive Ogden for the grand entry. Gentleman Jim from Utah's #1 Country will be onsite Saturday afternoon. There is a barrel race Sunday morning and we start again Monday with a junior rodeo, kids races topped off by a rough stock rodeo ( ba****cks, saddle broncs, and bulls, Monday afternoon. Should be a good old fashion hometown good time.

Good day gettin some miles on some of my own horses. Extremely rough country especially for the little girl’s debut mountain ride. Rocks,rocks, and more rocks mixed with enough dead fall to wear out a chainsaw. Fishing was great and everyone in the group reeled some in!

We are a little late, but we are grateful to live in this country and enjoy the freedom we have been afforded. Whiskey had a flat tire and needed a tune up, we stopped by Woody's Pit Stop and he’s ready to go. They may not do much for a flat tire on your horse but if your horseless carriage is in need of repair this is the place to go.
