Saving Tails Animal Rescue & Outreach (STAR) is a non profit 501c3 comprised solely of volunteers dedicated to homeless, neglected, abused and chained animals. Our rescue mission is to heal, fix, microchip and find loving families for homeless animals. Our outreach mission is to educate owners of chained and neglected animals to improve their living conditions by providing supply assistance such a

s insulated dog houses, straw, quality food and vet care. We get dogs into kennels to free them from chains and we work to spay and neuter all the animals to break the cycle and where improvements cannot be made, we work towards a surrender to find a new home for that animal. We are working actively to improve local animal welfare laws and ordinances and we believe that burning both ends of the candle is the only way to accomplish our mission successfully.

🌟 Weekly Outreach Update 🌟

Our team of rockstars hit the streets this week and were so grateful for the “warmer” days! ☀️ Many of our outreach dogs were still staying cozy inside (yay!), but we made sure to stuff everyone’s igloos with straw and provide delicious meals and meaty bones to our furry friends. 🦴🐶

🌟 RockSTAR ALERT! 🌟

Our outreach team of rockSTARS has done the seemingly impossible — every.single.program.dog is now currently safe and inside! 🐾❤️

You have NO idea the feat this was. It took negotiating, begging, pleading, helping, doing, and flat-out refusing to take "no" for an answer. The blood, sweat, and tears this team poured into making this happen are beyond words.

We know this is very temporary, but when you're surrounded by so much heartache, these small victories fuel us. 🕊️ We are celebrating. But we keep on fighting. Because we know there are still animals out there who aren't as lucky, and they need us to show up. We are looking for and assisting those that aren't yet as lucky. Please keep an eye out for your neighborhood dogs and sound the alarm for animals in need. It is life or death and they are desperate for our help ⚠️

🚨❄️ Our incredible rockSTAR volunteers have been working tirelessly to keep animals safe during this brutal weather. Pictured is one of our outreach pups that will be now thankfully sleeping in doors during this bitter cold.

Our volunteers have been:
🐾 Keeping a close eye on our outreach dogs that aren't indoors and texting owners to do the same
🐾 Following up on leads from the community about dogs that do not have adequate shelter
🐾 Partnering with animal control and the sheriff’s department to save lives
🐾 Opening up their already over-flowing homes for animals that need reprive
🐾 Moving dogs to safety, transporting crates, and doing whatever it takes—all while battling sickness themselves.

The need is overwhelming, and the line of animals requiring help feels endless. But together, we can make a difference.

💛 If you see a dog in need, step up to help:
👉 Stuff straw generously into doghouses and around them.
👉 Create windblocks to shield them.
👉 Encourage owners to move their dogs inside.
👉 Open your home temporarily to an animal in need.

🆓 Free straw is available at Genesee County Animal Control (look for the tent). Bring a garbage bag to transport it. Straw can save lives.

Jenny from the Block, our gorgeous Newfoundland Doodle, is back home with her foster mom after her spay appointment and is taking it easy while she recovers. 💕 This sweet girl’s vet bill today came to $342, and we could really use your help to cover it.

🌨️❄️ Freezing Temps, Warm Hearts ❄️🌨️

Michigan’s bitter cold has settled in, and for dogs living outside 24/7, it’s a fight for survival. This week, we braved the frigid temps to make sure every furry friend we care for is safe, warm, and loved. Here's what we accomplished on our outreach rounds:

🐕 Full Bellies & Happy Tails – Every pup received a hearty meal, yummy treats, and a big bone to enjoy.
🏠 Winter-Ready Homes – We generously stuffed outdoor houses with straw, replacing anything that wasn’t up to the challenge of this brutal weather.
🧥 Coats & Comfort – Old coats were swapped out, and we provided crates to help owners bring their dogs indoors.
📱 Friendly Reminders – We were thrilled to see some dogs already inside! For others, we texted reminders about how critical it is to keep them warm and safe indoors during these icy temps.

💡 Along the way, we offered education and support—potty training tips, crate training advice, and whatever else families needed to help keep their dogs safe and comfortable.

But the truth is, living outside in these conditions is hard. No dog should have to endure the freezing Michigan cold 24/7. That’s why we work tirelessly to be their voice, provide resources, and show owners a better way.

We’re hosting a Coat Drive for our outreach dogs who live outside 24/7. While we work hard to encourage their owners to bring them inside during harsh weather, some dogs are still left out in the cold. 💔

🌟 Outreach Update 🌟

Today was a great day of helping our community and furry friends! 🐾 We visited friends—both old and new—and worked hard to make sure they’re safe and warm as temperatures drop.

🏡 Several pups made it indoors, and we dropped off more crates to help others do the same. For those staying outside, we made sure their bellies were full, houses were stuffed with straw, and extra straw was spread for ground cover to help keep their paws warm. 🐕💛

🐱 We didn’t forget about the kitties either—they got some love too! Everyone went home with a bone to enjoy. 🦴

❄️ Urgent Need: Straw Donations ❄️
We are down to our last few bales of straw, and this is our biggest need right now. One bale keeps two dogs warmer for one week. It can mean the difference between life and death, providing not just warmth but comfort.

🐾 Help Bella and Her Babies 🐾

Sometimes, rescue work means making tough choices to give animals a chance at a better life, even when the situation isn’t perfect. Bella, one of our outreach dogs, appeared to be pregnant, and we couldn’t let her have her babies outside in the freezing cold. After speaking with her owner, we were able to convince them to let us whelp her puppies safely and then once the puppies are ready, Bella can be vaccinated, heartworm tested, and spayed before returning to her home, ending the cycle and giving her the break from the weather she so desperately needs. We will always continue working to improve Bella's life, but this is the first step.

We currently have a mountain of medical bills we are working on paying down due to several unforeseen cases that popped up recently so we put out a plea for help, but nobody or other rescues could take on this situation and help us. With our volunteers already stretched to their limits, still one of our amazing rockSTAR volunteers stepped up anyway, sacrificing her time and space to make sure Bella and her babies are cared for on top of all her other rescue and outreach duties. Now we could use a little help so we don't keep adding to that mountain.

**ADOPTABLE DOG**
Meet Jenny!

Jenny is a sweetheart with a big heart and an even bigger personality! This lovable girl is as sweet as they come and has already mastered "sit" and "lay down." She's a fantastic car companion and insists on sharing your bed at night—her cuddle game is unmatched!

Jenny is still polishing up a few manners, like keeping all four paws on the ground when she greets you and walking nicely on a leash. She’s also working hard on resisting the temptation to chew everything in sight, so she’ll need a family that’s mindful about keeping things out of her reach. With a little patience and structure, this girl will shine even brighter than she already does.

Jenny will be available to go to her forever home after her spay appointment on 1/20/25. She’s ready to find a family who will love her for the silly, affectionate, and loyal companion she is. Could that be you?

🐾 Before & After: The Difference Straw Makes 🐾

Before: This pup’s house was completely empty, leaving him with no insulation to protect against the cold.
After: Now it’s filled with straw, giving him a warm and cozy place to stay during harsh weather. 🛖✨

📊 Did you know? Dogs living outside without straw are significantly more susceptible to hypothermia and frostbite, while those with straw have a much better chance of staying warm and healthy.

🌟 Outreach Update: A Day to Remember 🌟

Today was incredible. Outreach days often leave us feeling overwhelmed and defeated, but not this time. Our team of rockSTARS truly knocked it out of the park! We’re ending the day with a renewed sense of hope and purpose—and a little extra peace of mind tonight.

While we can't share all the deets or photos, we have included a few but trust us when we say your support is making a difference and together we’re changing lives.

✨ Highlights from today:

Welcomed THREE amazing new volunteers to the team!

Handed out hearty food, treats, dog coats, and provided crates to get pups safely indoors.

Distributed straw to ease the chill and bones to help curb boredom.

Continued building relationships and education that will pave the way for a better tomorrow.

🐾 Community Outreach Update 🐾

We were so happy to do outreach last week and see that quite a few of our outreach dogs were inside! 🏡 Our goal is to get the owners to bring their pups inside during the colder weather, and we’re proud to supply crates to make it easier for them to do so.

Did You Know? ❄️ When temperatures drop below freezing, it can take as little as 30 minutes to an hour for water to start freezing solid. For dogs chained up outside 24/7, this means their water bowls can quickly turn to ice, leaving them without access to hydration. 🐾💔 Michigan needs stronger laws to protect outdoor dogs from harsh weather. No animal should have to endure freezing temperatures without proper shelter, warmth, or care. We are the voice for the voiceless. Ivy says "HAPPY THANKSGIVING" We hope you like your turkey as much as she does! 🦃

A Little Guy in Need 🐾 During Sunday outreach, we came across this little guy chained to a post. With the help of a good samaratin and another local rescue, he was safely secured and transported to animal control. ❤️ We’re not sure if his owners abandoned him or if someone found him and, unsure what to do, chained him to the pole to keep him safe from the busy road. Regardless, he’s now at animal control, where he’s waiting for an owner to come forward. Thank you to everyone who helped ensure his safety!
