Please read if you feed Purina.
It's just so disappointing as an animal owner that all I can do now is sit back and watch as some of my rabbits waste away and have seizures. All from one bag of feed.
Just $3 more per 50lbs and I could have avoided all of this. I regret ever using Purina feeds and standing behind that company. For the past 9 years of feeding that feed, it was always fresh, always smelled good, low dust, and I never had problems.
This summer that changed. The feed turned to a horrible consistency. I immediately contacted both my feed stores and Purina, and all I got was an "ok, thanks for letting us know". They didn't replace the 8 bags that I had to toss that cost me 16-19$ each.
The feed was good for a while, then all of a sudden I got some very stale bags. They smelled bad. It was a recent mill date on them too, so it wasn't from sitting around in the feed store. These bags were also full of feed dust. So, again, I contacted Purina. Still the same "thanks".
The consistency, color, smell, dust, etc. changed between every bag. But I trusted that this company knew what they were doing, and maybe it was just variations in the alfalfa. I mean, who wouldn't when they had no issues for 9 years? I was happy two weeks ago when I got fresh, green pellets.
Two weeks ago I had problems with some babies. I called it zombie rabbit disease. I would perform a necropsy on a dead kit, and when I open the chest the heart is still twitching and beating. Everything else said the rabbit was dead. Even a stethoscope couldn't pick up the heart movements. I lost 8 rabbits from one litter this way, and 3 from another.
On Sunday I found one of my young Californian does skinny and very weak. She got worse, so we culled her.
This week all my does were due. The same night a bunch of babies were born, I find my best herd buck Lucifer dead. His teeth were clenched over the wire, and he was stretched out from a very painful death. It was sudden. He was perfectly fine 15 minutes before.
Then Zoe watched as my doe Pixil had a seizure. She got worse and we had to put her down. Then we found Relic dead, exactly like Lucifer.
Now mind you, all these rabbits are in random places in my rabbitry. None were neighbors. Some had others they were living with that weren't affected.
Now I have numerous Britannia Petite adults that have lost condition and are acting lethargic. I have 17 baby Britannia Petites that have suddenly gone downhill today. They don't want to nurse. They already have the feed toxens, and they turned 2 days old today. I also had a litter of Cals born. The doe went crazy and had them all over instead of in the box, which is very unusual for her. I took the babies in, and three of them died suddenly when they were healthy before. The other two had seizures, but are doing fine now.
I've heard of other breeders losing their entire herd from Purina. But I thought the mill near our area was better than the ones that had a lot of issues.
When a herd becomes poisoned from a feed, a rabbit owner will usually pay for testing on both the rabbit and the feed to find the toxin. They will then send the results to the feed company, and they usually refund the money on your feed, and give you coupons for free feed, or find some other way to show they care about their customers. Purina? Well, they fight it and state that it's not their fault. They blame it on the feed store, or the breeder. It's anyone's fault but their own. They don't even replace the contaminated bags. This is why I'm not even going to bother paying to get this proof. Because I know it's the feed. Why else would my rabbits refuse to eat? Why else would the gall bladder, stomach, and intestines all appear burned, withered, abscessed, full of little tumors? And it's not like I'm getting anything from Purina.
It's just heartbreaking to watch my animals suffer. It's not like a disease where I can quarantine and protect the herd. This is poison given to every rabbit I own. Either my losses will stop here, or it will continue to kill every rabbit I own. All because I trusted Purina and I didn't want to switch brands. Because I was careless and went with the cheaper brand.
Not only am I losing pets and animals I love, but I'm losing investments, and animals that could better the breed. And all I can do is sit back and watch.
