Welcome Spring Creek’s Fool of a Took.

Pippin has been an easy addition to the family. He has the sweetest and most lovely, eager-to-please personality. I am excited to see how he grows up and what we can accomplish together. We will start showing together next year.

Being a member of good dog I gain access to educational webinars, podcasts, and resources as a breeder. I signed up this week for the Avidog’s Your Litter A to Z Course, free through good dog. I can’t wait to dive in and learn as much as possible.

The program includes:

18 modules that cover from before breeding, through getting your bitch pregnant, whelping your litter, and raising your pups.
Weekly reports so you can track your dog and her pups every step of the way.
Checklists and shopping lists to ensure you are prepared.
Worksheets for many aspects of breeding, such as timing your breeding and calculating food for your pups.
Live Q&A calls twice a month with Dr. Gayle Watkins, PhD (with recordings for those who can’t join live).
Certificate of completion mailed to you upon completion of the course.

Someone finally got all their health testing done! Getting Maeve's CHIC certificate has been a goal of mine since I got her, and it was super exciting to come home to this notification! I health tested her for everything The Irish Setter Club of America recommends. The CHIC certificate is awarded if you complete the three most basic testing for the breed, Thyroid, Hips and Progressive Retinal Atrophy of course you can see the extra tests I did on her.

The dogs and I have been out and about! For being in a severe drought in our area, I feel blessed that our mountains are still green and blooming.
The third photo is of Nessie, she just turned seven months and maturing nicely. I have noticed she is leaving the puppy stage and has started to calm down just a little. She actually loves to snuggle and sits still long enough now to be snuggled! 😆

Parade season has begun and the old cars are cleaned up for parades.

The dogs are soaking up the attention and enjoying all the festivities. Maeve and Nessie sleep during the concerts and firework shows. Yes, I do take the dogs to firework shows with us, they are desensitized to them and enjoy going with us and being with their humans.

Maeve and I had our first dog show last weekend and she received Best in Breed, Best Bitch, and First in the Irish Setter group. Should I mention she was the only Irish Setter? 😉 It was a great learning experience and now I know what we need to work on more.

This weekend, me and Maeve went on a beautiful hike. I was excited to bring my camera to photograph the beautiful wildflowers, but of course, Maeve needed pictures as well. I am so grateful to live where I do, it still blows my mind that this mountain beauty is only 10min away from home. I love being up in the mountains with my girl and spend quality time together, it really is a de-stressor.
I can't describe how much this dog means to me, she brings me so much joy. Maeve really is my best friend and I bring her with me everywhere she is allowed. I am sure everyone with dogs can relate.❤

I am a day late to ! I thought I would post some information on the wonderful breed the Irish Setter.

"A setter is a type of dog bred to locate gamebirds by using their keen sense of smell. The setter shows a hunter he’s found birds by “setting” down on his belly. Before the invention of fi****ms, setters worked in tandem with trained falcons and hunters using nets. Today, setters are gundogs, that is, they work with a hunter toting a rifle.

Irish huntsmen of the 1800s bred their sleek, rangy “Red Setters” to move freely and swiftly, the better to cover ground in the wide, flat countryside of the Emerald Isle. By way of contrast, the Irish Setter’s kinsman from Scotland, the Gordon Setter, was built to flush and retrieve game on rocky, punishing terrain and is therefore a heavier-bodied dog that moves at a more deliberate pace.

The Irish Setter earned a reputation as an energetic but efficient worker in the bird fields, and, thanks to its eye-catching good looks and graceful gait, has been a big winner in the show ring since the sport’s beginnings in the 1870s.

Standing more than two feet at the shoulder, with a substantial yet elegant build, the Irish is famed for a brilliant coat of mahogany or chestnut. Long, sinewy legs and powerful rear-drive help to place the Irish among the swiftest of all sporting dogs.

The Irish Setter’s lovable personality has endeared the breed to sportsmen and pet owners for more than 200 years. Irish are outgoing dogs who enjoy making friends. These rambunctious redheads are big kids at heart, but they are eager to please and will respond to patient, positive training. They are said to be bold and rugged hunting partners, with a devil-may-care approach to their work."

-American Kennel Club

FUN FACTS
The Irish Setter was one of the first 9 breeds registered with the AKC in 1878 and was recognized by the AKC once the club was founded in 1884.
The Irish Setter is believed to have developed from an English Setter-Spaniel-Pointer-Gordon Setter mix.
The early ancestors of the Irish Setter were not solid red, but red and white.

Miss Nessie is growing like a w**d, and is as smart as a whip! She still struggles with staying focused during training sessions, but I don't have too high of expectations for a 4-month-old puppy. I also can't believe how big she is! She was the runt of the litter, and we hoped she would be around Maeve's size, but looking at her catch up she might be quite a bit bigger! 😆 Don't worry Nester, we still love you!

We register all our dogs' health tests through OFA to provide a reliable and accurate resource as well as being open about our dogs' health testing results. "The OFA recommends owners release all test results to the public domain as it is in the ultimate health interest of the breed and the information greatly increases the depth and breadth of any resulting research and/or pedigree analysis." OFA only allows results from trusted and vetted laboratories so you can rest assured that our health testing is as accurate as it can be and from a trusted source.

The OFA is a great educational resource and if you are interested I would suggest reading through their website and doing some research on the breed you are interested in. The OFA does a lot of work with Breed Parent Clubs and coordinate the basic protocol testing that need to be done for that breed (CHIC Program).

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me and I will help to the best of my ability!

Meet Maeve and Nessie, the two females at Spring Creek Irish Setters. Maeve is two years old and has had almost all her testing done, and Nessie is four months.

Maeve is being trained to enter the show ring and in the future, field trials. We have our first show this year! 👏 She is on the smaller size at 26” and 60lbs. She is active, and super sweet. I have debated making her a Therapy Dog for amazing temperment and love, but have decided against it at this time.

Nessie is being trained in being a good puppy right now! 😂 She is very active and extremely intelligent. She is also very obstinate. We will see what the future has in store for her, right now she is a good companion for Maeve.
