Ever wonder why dogs can't have chocolate?? Here is why 👇

Theobromine is a compound found in cocoa and chocolate that is particularly toxic to dogs. While humans can metabolize theobromine efficiently, dogs process it much more slowly. This slower metabolism leads to the accumulation of theobromine in their system, which can cause various harmful effects.

Key Points about Theobromine Metabolism in Dogs:

1. **Absorption and Half-Life**: When a dog consumes chocolate, theobromine is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. In dogs, the half-life of theobromine can be up to 17.5 hours, compared to just a few hours in humans. This extended duration increases the risk of toxicity.

2. **Toxic Levels**: The level of theobromine varies in different types of chocolate. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate contain significantly higher concentrations of theobromine than milk chocolate. As little as 20 mg of theobromine per kilogram of a dog’s weight can lead to mild toxicity, while doses above 100-200 mg/kg can be life-threatening.

3. **Symptoms of Toxicity**: Symptoms of theobromine poisoning in dogs include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Increased heart rate
- Restlessness
- Muscle tremors
- Seizures
- In severe cases, it can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and death.

4. **Treatment**: If a dog is suspected of ingesting chocolate, immediate veterinary care is crucial. Treatments may include inducing vomiting, administering activated charcoal to limit absorption, and providing supportive care like IV fluids and medications to control symptoms.

Understanding these factors can help prevent accidental chocolate ingestion and ensure prompt action if it occurs.

This , we honor Adak, a true hero with over 12 years of service as an explosive detection dog. Adak served in dangerous locations like Baghdad, Iraq, and Kabul, Afghanistan safeguarding U.S. embassies, dignitaries, and high-ranking officials. His dedication to protecting lives was unwavering, and he was recognized at the American Humane Hero Dog Awards on the Hallmark Channel.

Adak was more than just a protector—he was a good boy through and through. We honor his legacy and thank him for his years of dedicated service.

Happy National Fire Pup Day! 🐾🔥 Today, we celebrate all of the incredible K9's who work tirelessly to protect our communities. One pup in particular, Kai, was an incredible arson detection dog who dedicated nine years of her life to the San Antonio Fire Department.

Kai was rescued from a shelter as a puppy, and had a long and heroic career in fire investigation. In 2014, Kai was named the American Humane Hero Dog of the Year and she also inspired countless children by visiting schools and educating them about fire safety.

Kai will be forever remembered as a hardworking and loyal dog who made a lasting impact on her community. Let's celebrate all the fire pups who dedicate their lives to keeping us safe!

In the fall, dogs will start developing their winter coats, creating more of a demand on the body to shed and grow a new, more dense coat. This process can take about 2 to 3 months, and the more North you are, the more of a change the coat will be. Also, dogs tend to gain weight in the winter months. This creates a difficult challenge for nutritionists and pet owners. Balancing both the additional nutritional needs for the growth of the winter coat and increased energy needs for thermoregulation with the cold weather, all the while reducing the risk or impact of seasonal weight gain.
