According to a recent survey the most popular New Years resolution for 2024 is "improved fitness".

For the people with improved fitness as their resolution (and even those without) don't forget to include your dog in your daily exercise routine. Walking your dog for 20 minutes a day can help improve your and your dog's health and mental well-being.

Just make sure if you have a puppy, senior dog or a dog with certain health needs to make sure to tailor your exercise plan accordingly. Have a healthy, adult dog? Make 20 minutes your minimum exercise time!

Lastly, a healthy diet is critical for overall health for you and your dog. Trust Old Guard with your dog's complete nutritional needs.

Did you know that season can impact how much food your dog eats? Dogs tend to eat more in the winter when it's cold and less in the summer when it's hot.

Why? They need less calories or energy in the summer to maintain body temperature and this can impact their feed intake.

Have you ever heard of Sergeant Stubby?

Sergeant Stubby was a dog and the unofficial mascot of the 102nd Infantry Regiment, assigned to the 26th (Yankee) Division in World War I. He served for 18 months and participated in 17 battles and four offensives on the Western Front.

Stubby saved his regiment from surprise mustard gas attacks, found and comforted the wounded, and even once caught a German soldier. His actions were well-documented in contemporary American newspapers. Stubby has been called the most decorated war dog of the Great War and the only dog to be nominated and promoted to sergeant through combat.

Stubby was found wandering the grounds of the Yale University campus in New Haven, Connecticut, in July 1917, while members of the 102nd Infantry were training. One soldier, Corporal James Robert Conroy, developed a fondness for him. When it came time for the outfit to ship out, Conroy hid Stubby on board the troop ship. Upon discovery by Conroy’s commanding officer, Stubby saluted him as he had been trained to in camp, and the commanding officer allowed the dog to stay on board. The rest is history.

Here is K-9 Rip, a Belgium Malinois, from Project K-9 Hero

The Belgian Malinois is a breed of dog that originated in the Belgian city of Malines, from where it derives its name, in the late 1800s. It was originally bred for a variety of working purposes such as herding, protecting livestock, and guarding property.

It was not until the early 20th century that the breed became widely popular outside of Belgium in large part because of its important role during World War I. It worked in several roles, including as messengers, scouts and protectors of military supplies. They also pulled ambulance carts and carts carrying fi****ms due to their strength and large size.

The first use of Belgian Malinois as a police K9 in the United States was documented in the early 1900’s in New York. They were not as widespread in use, however, until the 1960s when they first became the preferred breed of police departments across the country and subsequently were more widely used in the US Military.

In recent years, the Belgian Malinois has also become increasingly popular as a companion and family pet due to its gentle and affectionate nature and is today widely regarded as one of the most versatile and adaptable dog breeds, equally comfortable as a family pet or as a working dog in a variety of working roles such as law enforcement, search and rescue, and military service. However, as a working breed, it is important to give them the right training and exercise in the home.

FUN FACT: Belgian Malinois are the most common breed of dog that works with the Navy SEALS and wear special body armor and even night-vision goggles. A Belgian Malinois, Cairo, was involved in the take down of Osama Bin Laden.

On we take a moment of "paws" to honor legendary military service dog Smoky!

Found by American soldier Corporal William A. Wynne in an abandoned foxhole in the New Guinea jungle, Smoky traveled in a backpack for the next two years of WWII. During that time, the duo served in the South Pacific with the 5th Air Force and flew a dozen air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions. Over the course of her military service, Smoky survived 150 air raids in New Guinea and endured a typhoon at Okinawa.

One of Smoky's greatest accomplishments was made possible by her diminutive size. When military engineers needed to build a critical airbase for Allied warplanes, the team needed to run telegraph wire through a 70-foot-long pipe that was only 8 inches in diameter. Soil had filled most of the pipe, which meant the engineers would be exposed to a three-day dig while exposed to bombings – but Smoky was able to fit in the partially filled pipe and safely finished the job in minutes!

Smoky also holds the honor of being the first recorded therapy dog. Smoky's healing efforts first began at 233rd Station Hospital in New Guinea when she would visit injured soldiers coming from the Biak Island invasion. Her work as a therapy dog continued for more than a decade, long after she and Wynne left New Guinea for Wynne's hometown of Cleveland.

Thank you, Smoky, for your service and sacrifice to our country. We salute you!

The origins of the Navy actually predate independence by almost a year. Established on October 13th, 1775, by the Continental Congress during the American Revolution, it has since played a pivotal role in safeguarding the nation's freedom and projecting power globally. With its rich history of over two centuries, the Navy stands as a symbol of pride, honor, and tradition for the United States.

Pictured here is the Continental ship Alfred (1775–78). The painting by W. Nowland Van Powell, depicts Lieutenant John Paul Jones raising the Grand Union flag as Alfred was placed in commission.

Happy 248th Birthday to the United States Navy!
