Today, we remember one of the most pivotal moments in history. On this day 81 years ago, thousands of Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy in the largest seaborne invasion ever attempted.

Their courage turned the tide of World War II and helped secure the freedom we enjoy today.

James Buchanan, the 15th U.S. President had a dog named Lara, a Newfoundland. The Newfoundland breed was very rare at this time. Buchanan was very attached to his dog, and she was often seen as his companion during his time in the White House. Lara was known for her loyalty and affectionate nature. Due to her size (estimated to be around 150 lbs), she was often described as looking like a bear.

Happy Presidents Day!

Did you know many Presidents have had their family dogs join them in the White House? We will be highlighting some of these famous dogs over the next week.

Let's start with President George W. Bush and Mrs. Bush who had two beloved dogs—Barney, a Scottish Terrier, and Spot, an English Springer Spaniel in the White House with them. 🐾 Spot, born at the White House, was the offspring of the Bushes' dog Millie.

Both dogs traveled with the Bushes and were often seen by their side while boarding Air Force One or Marine One. 🛫

Spot enjoyed playing tennis and swimming, while Barney preferred volleyball and the cool marble floors of the White House.
