Do not leave your pets outside tonight. Please don’t.

For over a week, Mississippi's Emergency Management Agency has been begging people to make sure their pets are brought inside or have adequate shelter this weekend. The arctic blast our state is about to experience is no joke. Temperature wind chills will be dipping down into the negatives. Dogs WILL DIE if they are left outside. It does not matter if a dog has a "fur coat." They will experience hypothermia and frostbite in these temperatures and they WILL DIE. Outside animals burn off an extreme amount of calories trying to stay warm. Please make sure dogs and cats are provided with enough warm inside shelter, food and water bowls are not frozen. Before starting your cars, please make sure you honk the horn or bang on the hood. Animals desperate to find warmth will seek it under the hood of a warm car. Just please do the right thing and please encourage others to do the right thing. Mississippi Law requires that adequate shelter be provided for dogs and cats. As a rescue who does everything in its power to help save as many animals as we can take in and help, it is very disheartening to even have to make a post like this. It is hard to find adequate, inoffensive words asking people to please not let their animals die because of freakish, cold temperatures. To us, it's just a given. If you have a pet, you commit to providing care for that pet. And.......this weather warning post may not be the appropriate platform for this reminder, but it is also a very real topic that rescues deal with every single year after Christmas. Please don't do the "Christmas Puppy" thing if you have no intentions on that puppy being a member of your family for it's entire life, but instead a member that ends up in a few months living on a chain in horrible conditions because you don't have time for it any more or your child does not want to take over the responsibility of a puppy. A family member that ends up just like the baby in this picture. Most likely, a lot of the animals that will be left out in this cold are last year's presents that the new wore off of. Please don't be that human.
