Brachycephalic dogs, which have short, flat noses and elongated skulls (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus), are at risk of heat-related issues because their anatomy makes it harder for them to cool down. They have less efficient respiratory systems and struggle with effective panting, which is their primary method of heat dissipation. In hot weather, they are more susceptible to overheating, heatstroke, and respiratory distress. To keep them safe, it's best to avoid walks during hot weather and ensure they stay cool with plenty of water and shade.

Update - these 2 sweeties were to go to their new adoptive home today. Regrettably, the prospective adopter changed her mind this morning. We now need a new home for Zamboni and Fancy. Please let us know if you are interested.

Since so many kind souls came forward with offers of help for little Sadie with the heart murmur, we are posting these two sweeties in the hopes someone will offer to foster them. We are experiencing an unprecedented number of collies in need of assistance. We had a foster home lined up, but there was a family emergency requiring the foster to leave the country.

Here is a little bit about them. Regrettably, their owner recently passed. The male tri is named Zamboni and is 8 years old. The female sable is named Fancy and is 12. Both are spayed/neutered. They have lived with cats. Very friendly around all people including children. The family members are taking care of them now but cannot do so much longer.

We are committed to keeping them together. If you wish to foster and have not yet done so for us before, we will need a foster app completed. Contact us at [email protected]. We now have an electronic application. (Yay, Doug!) If you need a paper app, we can provide that as well. We have world class volunteers who will help with transport. We cover all veterinary costs, prescriptions and grooming.

We are open to adopting to the foster home if desired. Some of our volunteers like to foster, and some end up falling in love with their foster(s) and can't say goodbye and want to adopt. More than one board member has become a foster failure (cough, cough) over the years. The single most important outcome is to place them in a wonderful home together.

Let us know if you can help.

It's HOT out there! โ˜€๏ธ ๐Ÿ”ฅ Please be cautious about having your dog accompany you to outdoor events (especially if they are on pavement!) and be sure they have lots of shade and fresh water when they do need to be outside. Do you know how to recognize signs of heat stroke in dogs?

If you observe these signs, get your dog out of the heat and to a veterinarian immediately - heat stroke can escalate fast!

ARMAND - CrossPost for
https://www.petfinder.com/dog/armand-71868360/tn/memphis/tails-of-hope-dog-rescue-tn613/

Yes, he's gorgeous, cute, and a peanut - a brindle Frenchie! Wow. 1 1/2 yo

BUT... read his bio - he's small BUT mighty. Not for a first-time dog owner and Frenchie/Bulldog experience is a must.

He is a resource guarder - if other dogs attempt to take anything that is his, including the water bowl, he will growl - so a reactive dog in his home will not work. He does live with other dogs, but his owner is experienced in dealing with this behavior.

He does NOT resource guard with humans!

If you read the bio and think this boy would be a good fit for your home, please visit Tails of Hope and complete their online application!

MEET BODHI!!
Bodhi is 3-4 years old and is living with his foster family of 4 dogs and 2 humans. His foster is also a trainer, so Bodhi has been fortunate to receive extensive training and is a great dog. Bodhi loves to be with his people, and his foster says that he is one of the most intelligent and obedient dogs he has come across. He walks nicely on a leash, knows basic commands, is eager to please, gets along with the other dogs in the home, rides well in a car. He loves learning, training, structure and having a job to do.
Please apply to meet Bodhi here: https://www.petfinder.com/dog/bodhi-fka-bo-come-meet-me-51499338/ma/medfield/forever-home-rescue-new-england-ma368/

Trimming black or thick claws on cats and dogs requires a bit of caution and attention to detail since you can't see the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail) as easily as in lighter-colored claws.
I prefer to stop at the green tick in the diagram and dremel a little further, but definately do not head to the yellow or red tick if you are a beginner ๐Ÿค—

Here are some tips and tricks for trimming your own pets claws:

Use Proper Lighting: Ensure you have good lighting when trimming. A bright light source ie: a torch can help you see the quick through the nail if it's translucent.

Take Small Steps: Trim small bits of the nail at a time to reduce the risk of cutting the quick. This is especially important with black claws where the quick is not easily visible.

Look for Visual Cues: Some black claws may have a lighter or translucent tip if you look underneath the claw, where you can see the quick.

Be Prepared: Have styptic powder or cornflour on hand in case you accidentally cut the quick. Dabbing the powder on to the tip of the claw will help stop any bleeding quickly.

Have Patience: If your pet is anxious or resistant, take breaks and reward them for good behaviour. It may take a few sessions to trim all nails comfortably. You don't have to trim them all at once!

Seek Professional Help: If you're unsure or uncomfortable trimming your pet's nails, consider having a professional groomer or veterinarian demonstrate the process.

Practice Regularly: Regular trimming helps keep the quick shorter and encourages the quick to recede, making future trims easier.

By following these tips and being cautious, you can safely trim black claws in cats and dogs without causing discomfort or injury.
