Brachycephalic dogs, which have short, flat noses and elongated skulls (like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus), are at risk of heat-related issues because their anatomy makes it harder for them to cool down. They have less efficient respiratory systems and struggle with effective panting, which is their primary method of heat dissipation. In hot weather, they are more susceptible to overheating, heatstroke, and respiratory distress. To keep them safe, it's best to avoid walks during hot weather and ensure they stay cool with plenty of water and shade.

It's HOT out there! ☀️ 🔥 Please be cautious about having your dog accompany you to outdoor events (especially if they are on pavement!) and be sure they have lots of shade and fresh water when they do need to be outside. Do you know how to recognize signs of heat stroke in dogs?

If you observe these signs, get your dog out of the heat and to a veterinarian immediately - heat stroke can escalate fast!

Trimming black or thick claws on cats and dogs requires a bit of caution and attention to detail since you can't see the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail) as easily as in lighter-colored claws.
I prefer to stop at the green tick in the diagram and dremel a little further, but definately do not head to the yellow or red tick if you are a beginner 🤗

Here are some tips and tricks for trimming your own pets claws:

Use Proper Lighting: Ensure you have good lighting when trimming. A bright light source ie: a torch can help you see the quick through the nail if it's translucent.

Take Small Steps: Trim small bits of the nail at a time to reduce the risk of cutting the quick. This is especially important with black claws where the quick is not easily visible.

Look for Visual Cues: Some black claws may have a lighter or translucent tip if you look underneath the claw, where you can see the quick.

Be Prepared: Have styptic powder or cornflour on hand in case you accidentally cut the quick. Dabbing the powder on to the tip of the claw will help stop any bleeding quickly.

Have Patience: If your pet is anxious or resistant, take breaks and reward them for good behaviour. It may take a few sessions to trim all nails comfortably. You don't have to trim them all at once!

Seek Professional Help: If you're unsure or uncomfortable trimming your pet's nails, consider having a professional groomer or veterinarian demonstrate the process.

Practice Regularly: Regular trimming helps keep the quick shorter and encourages the quick to recede, making future trims easier.

By following these tips and being cautious, you can safely trim black claws in cats and dogs without causing discomfort or injury.

We post this every year but until people graduate to drone fireworks only, this is an issue. Also good to note that behaviour can change when a dog is stressed which can also lead to snapping or fear biting- something Jeremy knows all about in his work- so take extra precautions this week!

Franklin Fireworks for July 4th are going to be on JULY 6th, Saturday this year. Foxboro will be on July 3rd, Milford is on July 5th and Bellingham will be on August 10th. And individuals will certainly be celebrating on July 4th.

Please don't let your dog stay home alone. They may be terrified. Happy Tails Doggy Daycare has an internal room (no windows) with white noise, candlelight, calming pheromones and an attendant to get them thru these days. If you have made plans last minute and are a current client, Call 508-541-8587 for a reservation.

Holidays with fireworks cause lots of loud noises, which can cause dog anxiety. Learn how to keep your dog calm during fireworks.

As an owner of a couple anxious dogs myself, I will share this every year.

Quick PSA: During the Fourth of July holiday, and the days leading it up to it when folks start celebrating with noisy fireworks, scores of pets run away from the sights and sounds, making the day after Independence Day the busiest of the year for animal hospitals and shelters. Please do your due diligence. And if you feel as though your pet may need medication to help them relax during firework season, now is the time to speak with your veterinarian!

Please make sure you keep your pets at home or walk in the early morning or late evening. I saw a person walking a boxer who was lagging behind with its tongue lolling out- clearly overheated. It doesn't take long for a pet to die in extreme heat.

As the hot weather ramps up in Connecticut, you should keep a close eye on your pets to ensure they stay safe in the extreme heat.
