Did you know that elderberry syrup helps with more than just the common cold?? Yep!

I've been using the same recipe for over 10 years! The only thing that's changed is the addition of citric acid to make it shelf stable....oh, and I only use American elderberries now. :-)

In the Acidified Food Processing class, we learn how to get the pH levels to where they are safe to consume. North Carolina prohibits the sale of potentially hazardous foods, which are usually foods that need refrigeration. That's why mine has been shelf-stable since I took the class a little over 2 years ago.

Make sure you're only buying elderberry syrup that has safe pH levels so you aren't at risk for food-borne illnesses!

I have 12 jars of Fire Cider ready to go!

Fire cider is an herbal tonic that’s used to boost immunity, help with digestion, and warm you up on a cold day. Basically, it's apple cider vinegar with the mother and lots of other good stuff added. You can take a spoonful of fire cider every day or at the first sign of a cold. Some people prefer to dilute the mixture with juice, use it as vinegar on a salad, or drizzle it over vegetables.

Need some elderberry plants?

Now that it's consistently cold out, it's the perfect time to take cuttings and put them in the ground. Unlike many plants, it's best to put elderberry cuttings in the ground in the winter months while the ground is still workable. Planting them now allows the plant to focus on root growth rather than leaf and bloom growth. By the Spring, your elderberry cuttings should have good root growth in the ground, helping them to grow strong! If your ground isn't quite ready yet, you can put the cuttings into a pot and leave them outside in a mostly shaded area until you're ready to put them into the ground, just make sure to keep them watered well.

When we planted our 500+ plants here on the farm, it was in the beginning of February, and over 90% of them were successful!

If you would like some for yourself, they are $4 each or 3 for $10. Varieties include Adams (most common in area), John's, Wyldwood, Bob Gordon, Ranch, Pocahontas, Nova, Scotia. All but Adams will have limited availability!

Until May of 2024, we had our bus camper on Hipcamp. In May, we had refugees from Venezuela move to the farm. They were homeless and needed a "short term" place to stay. They moved out of the bus two months ago. One part of the family moved into a house down the road, and the other part of the family moved into an RV that was donated to the ministry.

After they moved out of the bus, it had to be completely redone. The futon was broken, the mattress was nasty, the flooring was destroyed, and everything was really dirty. It needed a complete overhaul!

Well, it's pretty much done! We put some super soft carpet down, a new sofa, new mattress and bedding, and a really deep cleaning!

We're a little gun shy about renting it out right now, but we'll enjoy it for the time being! I love how it turned out! ❤️

I've had several people ask about us taking donated trees this year. We have done so for years, but, after more research, have decided not to from here on out unless the tree came directly from a tree farm.

Trees purchased from stores are almost guaranteed to have fire retardant, herbicides, fungicides, insecticide, and growth hormones sprayed on them. I certainly don't want my animals eating that!

I was at tractor supply a few days ago and the manager told me he had just put all their leftover trees out back if I wanted them. Well, they stayed out back, because the health of my animals is more important to me than some free feed. 😀

Check out this really cool 3D print I just pulled off the printer! It holds a 12 ounce can (you actuality drink from the can since the filament isn't food safe). I will have these at the Faire at the Farm - A Renaissance Faire for the Whole Family in November! Of course, you can purchase them ahead of time as well.
