People have been asking about the Dog Pneumonia & Mystery Illness in the news. Yes, we do have it in Grand County. To prevent your dogs from getting this, please make sure they are UP TO DATE on vaccines, including canine influenza and bordetella (kennel cough). Please keep them out of high dog-traffic areas like dog parks and keep them away from dogs you don't know or dogs that are sick. Most of these sick dogs have coughing, runny nose, and runny eyes. Some are lethargic (tired) and/or run a fever. If any of these signs occur, please contact YOUR veterinarian and have your dog(s) checked out. This is very contagious and you may be asked to wait outside or in your car for your appointment.

From New Hampshire to Oregon, researchers are trying to figure out what’s causing an infectious respiratory disease among dogs that has turned deadly in rare cases.

We have received a ton of questions about the dog pneumonia/flu outbreak. At this time we are recommending that you make sure that your dog(s)' kennel cough (bordetella) and influenza vaccines are up to date. We are also recommending that you keep them out of dog parks, boarding kennels, groomers, and high dog traffic areas when possible. If your dog is not feeling well (fever, cough, etc), please make an appointment to see your vet for a checkup and QUARANTINE it for 2 weeks. We do have the Influenza and Bordetella vaccines in stock currently.

The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association says it is aware of a suspected outbreak, and testing is underway to determine a cause of illness.

Tick Results from 2022 Study Are Here! We received 207 ticks from all over the state. The vast majority were Dermacentor species, which was expected. 4 were Rhipicephalus and 1 was an Amblyomma. No diseases were found among diseases tested, though funding only covered Lyme disease. We have more funding for 2023 and should be able to expand disease testing. Thank you for all of your help in 2022, let's collect more ticks for 2023!!!

The ticks are out! Please bring me your ticks. I would like anything collected within the state of Colorado. I just need your name, city where collected, and what animal it came off of (if one). You can put them in a baggy and bring them into Grand Animal Hospital in Fraser, CO or mail them to me at PO Box 14, Fraser, CO 80442. This is for a tick study to find out what ticks are present in the state and which diseases they carry. Thank you!

PSA: We keep seeing dietary dilated cardiomyopathy (dietary DCM) cases and they're totally preventable. This is a potentially fatal disease and is caused by feeding pet foods that don't meet WSAVA guidelines. I spoke with the cardiologist yesterday and she told me that they have not had one case from a dog eating foods tmeet WSAVA guidelines. Those food brands are Iams, Purina, Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Eukanuba. Please do your research before feeding your pets. Marketing is effective, but not always true. Inform yourself and don't let your pet die from eating a "super premium" food that turned out to be not-so-great. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/outbreaks-and-advisories/fda-investigation-potential-link-between-certain-diets-and-canine-dilated-cardiomyopathy

Its that time of year again where we start thinking about ticks! Yuck! If you find any ticks on you, your pets, or in your home within the state of Colorado, please bring them to Grand Animal Hospital or mail them to us at PO Box 14, Fraser, CO 80442. Please include your name, location (town) where you found the tick, and what animal it was on if on one!
