Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital has been an Accredited Member of the American Animal Hospital Association from 1989-2014. As of November 2014 we are no longer seeking membership as an AAHA accredited hospital. The new AAHA policy regarding dentals would force us to anesthetize patients we feel should not go under anesthesia for an elective procedure. Since 2004, we had proudly and repeatedly ear
ned recognition as a THREE YEAR MEMBER, which is the highest honor a veterinary hospital can receive. What this meant was that MAVH exceeded the AAHA standards to such a degree that we were not required to have another inspection until each three year period expired. Regardless of our AAHA accreditation standing, we will continue to improve and raise our standards in order to maintain such an accomplishment and provide our clients and their pets with the highest quality of care available. If AAHA chooses to change their policy at a future date we may reconsider our membership application status.

Peanut Butter had a fractured tooth from chewing on a bone. The owner brought her in because her breath was bad. Compare the fractured tooth side to the normal side of her mouth. The surgery pic shows how long her roots are on the 3-rooted tooth. The tooth roots need to be exposed by drilling away the jawbone overlaying the roots and then we split the tooth into 3-pieces before extracting each portion. Lastly, we suture the gums back into place. Of course, not only is Peanut Butter under general anesthesia for this procedure, but she had 3 injections for pain control as well as a nerve block!

"Five", the 9 month old kitten, is watching his mom from inside the oxygen tent. He had been grabbed by a dog and shook, causing his diaphragm to herniate and his liver and possibly even his spleen squeezed up into his chest cavity.
"Five" needs everyone's love and prayers as his mom tries to find a surgeon that can help him as it is too intimate of a surgery such that both emergency hospitals in Bakersfield recommended referral to a specialty center in the Los Angelas direction. That's where prices really start to escalate!

🦃🐾 Happy Thanksgiving! 🍂❤️
This holiday, we’re grateful for our furry friends who bring so much joy to our lives! As you gather with loved ones, here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and happy:
Beware of Table Scraps: Many Thanksgiving foods can be harmful to pets. Stick to pet-safe treats and avoid giving them turkey skin, bones, or anything with onions or garlic. 🚫🍗
Secure the Trash: With all the cooking and feasting, make sure trash cans are secure to prevent your pets from getting into leftovers that could be harmful. 🗑️🐕
Comfort First: If your pet gets anxious with guests or loud celebrations, create a quiet space for them to relax away from the hustle and bustle. 🛏️✨
Give Thanks for Health: Schedule a check-up to ensure your pets are healthy and happy as we head into the winter season! 🩺🐾
From all of us, we wish you a safe and joyful Thanksgiving filled with love and gratitude! Share what you’re thankful for this year in the comments! 🦃❤️

🐾 Dogs have a unique way of cooling off. Unlike humans whose sweat glands are found all over the body, dogs mostly sweat through their paws and nose! Panting also helps them dissipate heat through evaporative cooling . . . . who knew!??. 🌬️🐕
🐾 Animal Pain Awareness Month: Recognizing the Signs 🐾
September is Animal Pain Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about the signs of pain in our pets. Animals often hide their pain, making it crucial for us to recognize the subtle signs. Here’s what to look out for:
1. Changes in Disposition 🐶: Increased aggression, anxiety, or withdrawal can indicate pain.
2. Altered Eating Habits 🍽️: A sudden loss of appetite or difficulty eating may be a red flag.
3. Mobility Issues 🐕: Limping, stiffness, or reluctance to move can signal discomfort.
4. Vocalization 🐱: Excessive whining, crying, or purring can be ways pets express pain.
5. Physical Changes 👀: Swelling, redness, or abnormal posture might point to underlying issues.
If you notice any of these signs, consult with us. Early detection and treatment can make a significant difference in your pet’s quality of life.
Let’s work together to ensure our pets live pain-free, happy lives. Share this post to help spread awareness!

Dr. Diane Cosko received her first college degree (Bachelor of Science) at the age of 19 and went on to earn a second bachelor’s and then her DVM degree by the age of 24. Driving all the way up from her veterinary jobs in San Diego and then West Los Angeles on her days off, Dr. Cosko made herself available to help the residents of Frazier Park procure some veterinary care for their pets while their regular veterinarian was indisposed. After events created an opportunity for Dr. Cosko to start her own veterinary business, she started out small, with just $1800 to her name. Always promoting lifelong education with all of her staff as well as herself, Dr. Cosko has also become an attorney-at-law in 2010 specializing in animal law and has just received her Masters in Veterinary Sciences - Forensics in 2019.
Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital actually started out as Mountain Aire Veterinary Clinic in a small motor home borrowed from her parents and parked in their cabin’s driveway along the dirt trail behind the rock houses. Within a year, it moved to the ‘spacious’ 600 square foot facility next to the current Hall Ambulance in downtown Frazier Park. So spacious were these facilities, Dr. Cosko remembers fondly, that her ‘office desk’ was comprised of her sitting on the only ‘chair’ in the building (the toilet), holding a cutting board on her lap!
Here is where she forged many long-term relationships with clients that still utilize the current hospital 29 years later!!! Along with their now-grown children coming in with their own pets. Also, here is where Dr. Cosko created her initial relationships with clients that subsequently became employees and are still working with her today.
Without the exceptional and hard, tireless work of Dr. Cosko’s co-workers, she would not be able to deliver the excellent care that people have come to expect to this day.
Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital moved in to their current facilities on Lebec Road in 1992. Although, at that time, everyone called the newly built facility a ‘Taj mahal’, not only did they quickly feel they were busting at the seams, it is now dwarfed by the average 10-20,000 square foot facilities that are routinely built to house veterinary hospitals. The treatment room, radiology room, isolation room and boarding facilities were newly remodelled in 2017, creating a more spacious, bright and modern feel to the inner working body of the hospital.
Mountain Aire Veterinary Hospital had been an Accredited Member of the American Animal Hospital Association from 1991-2014. As of November 2014 we were no longer seeking membership as an AAHA accredited hospital as the new AAHA policy regarding dentals would force us to anesthetize patients we feel should not go under anesthesia for an elective procedure. We will gladly rejoin them once they revisit their restrictive policy concerning many veterinarians that have chosen to leave their membership.
Regardless of our AAHA accreditation (a review we as veterinarians pay for ourselves) standing, we will continue to improve and strive to exceed our standards in order to maintain and provide our clients and their pets with the highest quality of care available.
