For my current and past clients... And everyone, including trainers! I highly recommend taking just about any of Susan Garrett's online offerings. Home School the Dog is a great way to get your feet wet. Susan is an amazing instructor of humans as well as dogs, so trainers can learn how to help the human side of the equation. And everyone can benefit from Susan's approaches to motivating every dog to do the things we want or need them to do, whether that means competing in a dog sport or just being a good family dog. ❤️🐾

The doors to our transformational online programs are open for you to join or gift at https://dogsthat.com/fb/celebrate/

I love this video! Personal space is important for dogs. 😊 And although we should always respect our dogs' personal space and choices (while guiding them toward safe and appropriate choices), not doing so has the most potential for negative consequences (like a bite!) with a dog who is new to you, such as a newly adopted dog or a dog you or your child meet in the park, on a walk, at a friend's house, etc.

While you strive to give your dog plenty of exercise, don't forget that they need mental stimulation too. In fact, some dogs may need mental stimulation (and possibly help learning to settle and be calm) more than they need physical exercise.

Sometimes dog behavior issues can be greatly alleviated if we figure out how to better meet the dog's needs. Not the needs we think they have (for high quality food, comfy beds, 2-3 walks per day, fill in the blank), but the needs they actually have. This can mean anything from a sniffy walk around town or along a creek on a long line, to opportunities to scavenge safely, to a nosework class, or a sport like agility.

Looking for a fun, bonding (and enriching!) activity you can do with just about any dog? Try nosework! Great for dogs of all ages and activity levels, dogs like Kaia here who aren't very "sporty"/drivey, and dogs who don't (yet) have perfect manners. Kaia and I just finished our first nosework class with Fitnacity Dog Training ! The scenery isn't bad either. 😊 All dogs have excellent noses and will surprise and impress you with what they can do.

Yes! I know that if your dog growls at you, it can feel like disrespect ... it is not! It's a dog trying her best to tell you she's uncomfortable, which has nothing to do with respect. ❤️🐾

We're taught when we're very little that a dog's growl is an aggressive action, but it's not! A growl is how a dog says "I'm uncomfortable with what's happening right now, and if it doesn't stop, I'll need to take steps to defend myself." Except, you know, shorter.

If you hear a dog growl, don't think of it as aggressive, think of it as necessary warning - and then take action, STAT.

[image description: a menacing looking cartoon dog faces a startled cartoon boy. Text reads "when you hear 'grrrr' take action: Stop what you're doing, Thank the dog for warning, not biting, Assess - does this have to happen now? Take steps to make the dog more comfortable. Respect the growl!"]

This is an excellent demonstration of dog body language! And it's quick. Watch it, show it to your kids, and then try to spot happy, tense, and fearful dogs in the real world. It's important because any dog can be pushed to bite when we don't listen to them and kids are the ones most often bitten. ❤️

Do your dogs come happily running to you when you call? If not, let's work on that! It feels so good to have even an independent thinker (malamute mix on left) decide that mom has value just like that 🐿️ does. 😁 Of course, in positive reinforcement training, we need to set our dogs up for success and recognize their inherent strengths and weaknesses.

Dogs are so forgiving of our confusing cues! E.g., one family member uses "down" for "stop jumping on guests" (which the dog doesn't understand) and another to use "down" to mean "lie down." Sometimes dogs can figure out the meaning from context, but clear consistent communication is so helpful to improving our relationships with the puppers. 🐾💕

"Stay" or "Wait"? "Down" or "Off"? If you aren't clear about what you're asking for, don't expect your dog to give it to you.

Our dogs are our family members and our best friends. But an appropriate greeting for a dog looks very different from an appropriate greeting for a human. Advocate for your dog! ❤ If a friend, family member, or stranger wants to say hi to your dog, help them do so appropriately. And if you think your dog is not going to handle a greeting very well, just say, "I'm sorry, he's in training" or "I'm sorry, she isn't comfortable with new people." And then contact a trainer to help your dog become more comfortable around new people.

Please spread the word! The prevalence of xylitol-containing gum is especially worrisome to those of us whose dog tends to hoover up "sidewalk snacks" quicker than you can say "leave it"!

I know you have many different training approaches to choose from. The most important thing is to be able to recognize how your dog is responding to training. If you dog looks like the one on the right, it's time to try a new approach. I recently watched a dog -- same dog, two occasions -- being intimidated and corrected so severely by his owner and his trainer (who declared that he was just "being dramatic") that he showed every example of "shut down" body language shown here. Train without pain or intimidation! And I say this as a dog mom who has tried the full range of training techniques. Need help without judgement regarding what you've tried? Get in touch via messenger or email ([email protected]). Check out my website for more info on my approach: muttamorphosisdogtraining.com
