The AWLFC was established as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in 2001. What began as a grassroots group of concerned animal lovers has grown into the county’s largest all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue an

d welfare organization. In October 2009, the AWLFC opened our first adoption center and office at 1202 East Patrick Street, Suite 13A, in Frederick, MD. This office serves as the headquarters for all AWLFC activities, including cat and dog adoptions, our monthly spay/neuter clinic, education and training sessions, and fund-raising events. Founded on the philosophy that every animal deserves a loving home, and that euthanasia is neither an acceptable nor humane form of managing animal populations, the AWLFC has four core programs designed to reduce pet homelessness and euthanasia rates in the region. In collaboration with local shelters, other rescue organizations, and concerned citizens, the AWLFC provides foster care for cats and dogs and then places them in a permanent home via our adoption process. Working with property owners and concerned citizens, the AWLFC coordinates the only formal Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program in Frederick County, Fixing Frederick’s Felines (FFF). TNR involves the humane trapping of feral and free-roaming cats, sterilization, and vaccination, followed by release back to a committed care-giver who provides food, shelter, and necessary medical care. TNR is the only humane way to manage feral and free-roaming cat populations. The AWLFC offers a monthly spay/neuter clinic designed to help low-income families and individuals access affordable spay/neuter and vaccinations for their pets. In addition to the monthly clinic, AWLFC provides financial assistance to pet owners who need help getting needed veterinary treatment for their cat or dog. AWLFC subsidizes both the monthly spay/neuter clinic and financial assistance for people facing financial hardship. The Friends Helping Felines (FHF) Program was created to help give people the means to spay and neuter homeless cats and kittens and place them in forever homes at those times when the Animal Welfare League's foster program is filled to capacity. FHF participants will have access to reduced rates for routine veterinary care, including spay or neuter and rabies vaccination. And, AWLFC helps people get the cats adopted into forever homes.

💥 It’s Cyber Monday, and that means that tomorrow is Giving Tuesday! 💥

We’d like to introduce you to Dylan. This little girl is doing well so far, after multiple bouts of serious GI issues and a very scary re**al prolapse. She has been in treatment for the last month and has spent a total of 9 days hospitalized at the vet. She also required a midnight trip to the ER. We believe she is on the mend and are cautiously optimistic now.

Dylan is the sweetest little cat, at a petite 5.5 pounds. She loves to play and cuddle in bed with her foster parents. She is also a "flop cat" because she will just run up to you, throw herself on the floor, and roll around looking for belly skritches.

As you can imagine, AWLFC has invested a significant amount in Dylan’s veterinary care, but she deserved a chance!

For this Giving Tuesday, will you consider donating so we can continue to help the animals like Dylan who are in our care?

🧡 Giving Tuesday is December 3rd! 🧡

Sweet Marvel has been in an amazing AWLFC foster home for about one year. This resilient boy came to AWLFC from Animal Control with an incurable heart condition. He was given a grim prognosis but has beaten the odds and is thriving in his forever foster home.

We know Marvel’s time will likely be cut short due to his heart condition. He is currently in our hospice program and we will continue to support him for the remainder of his life.
Your support on this Giving Tuesday would mean the world to Marvel and our other foster pups! Please consider a donation to help with programs like these. 🫶🏽

📣 Giving Tuesday is right around the corner!

This kitten season has been incredibly overwhelming. Despite the endless hours volunteers have spent doing TNR (Trap Neuter Return), we have seen and are still seeing a record breaking number of kittens being born to suffer outside.

Earlier this year we shared about a colony in Urbana, where we TNRed 25 cats and 10 kittens. We had no foster homes available and neither did other rescues in the area. These kittens were kept quarantined at a mechanic’s vacant office and our volunteers went twice a day to feed, clean, and medicate them until space opened up in some of our foster homes.

After three weeks of their hard work one kitten suddenly became incredibly ill, and this kitten turned out to have distemper. This diagnosis can be devastating. With help and guidance from our vet, our volunteers immediately began implementing the panleukopenia protocol for them all, both symptomatic and asymptomatic. Three of these sweet kittens did not make it…but seven little fighters survived against all odds!

Of the seven, Atlas, Camry, Chevy, and Kia are still available for adoption.

Will you consider a donation with Giving Tuesday, so help fund projects like this?

Giving Tuesday is December 3rd! 🫶🏽

Our dedicated TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) team has been hard at work rescuing and fostering kittens from a local campground, ensuring they receive the care and attention they deserve. With over 25 adults TNRed and 27 kittens rescued, we're committed to making a difference in the lives of these animals.

We are deeply grateful for the support and compassion from our community as we continue to provide the best possible care for all the animals in our rescue. Will you consider a donation for Giving Tuesday? It’s coming up soon on December 3rd. 💜

🐾 These sweet boys are still looking for a home to call their own.

Chip and Fudge are both very affectionate and purr as soon as their foster mom walks in the room. They love to be pet but also love to play and would do best either in a home together or with at least one other playful cat.

They will be at our adoption center on Saturday, November 30th from 12-2 pm. If you would like more information, please email their foster mom at [email protected]
