The AWLFC was established as a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization in 2001. What began as a grassroots group of concerned animal lovers has grown into the county’s largest all-volunteer, no-kill animal rescue an

d welfare organization. In October 2009, the AWLFC opened our first adoption center and office at 1202 East Patrick Street, Suite 13A, in Frederick, MD. This office serves as the headquarters for all AWLFC activities, including cat and dog adoptions, our monthly spay/neuter clinic, education and training sessions, and fund-raising events. Founded on the philosophy that every animal deserves a loving home, and that euthanasia is neither an acceptable nor humane form of managing animal populations, the AWLFC has four core programs designed to reduce pet homelessness and euthanasia rates in the region. In collaboration with local shelters, other rescue organizations, and concerned citizens, the AWLFC provides foster care for cats and dogs and then places them in a permanent home via our adoption process. Working with property owners and concerned citizens, the AWLFC coordinates the only formal Trap/Neuter/Release (TNR) program in Frederick County, Fixing Frederick’s Felines (FFF). TNR involves the humane trapping of feral and free-roaming cats, sterilization, and vaccination, followed by release back to a committed care-giver who provides food, shelter, and necessary medical care. TNR is the only humane way to manage feral and free-roaming cat populations. The AWLFC offers a monthly spay/neuter clinic designed to help low-income families and individuals access affordable spay/neuter and vaccinations for their pets. In addition to the monthly clinic, AWLFC provides financial assistance to pet owners who need help getting needed veterinary treatment for their cat or dog. AWLFC subsidizes both the monthly spay/neuter clinic and financial assistance for people facing financial hardship. The Friends Helping Felines (FHF) Program was created to help give people the means to spay and neuter homeless cats and kittens and place them in forever homes at those times when the Animal Welfare League's foster program is filled to capacity. FHF participants will have access to reduced rates for routine veterinary care, including spay or neuter and rabies vaccination. And, AWLFC helps people get the cats adopted into forever homes.

🧡 Update on Ambrosia 🧡

Sweet girl made it through her surgery today like the tough kid she is. She is now home resting comfortably. She is enthusiastically eating soft food and drinking water, and has pain meds on board.

Her veterinary team successfully removed a large polyp that started behind her ear drum, but had grown through the Eustachian tube (auditory tube) and into the back of her throat. She was also spayed at the same time to reduce the risk of more anesthesia. We will put a picture of the evicted polyp in the comments for those who are interested in seeing it (we think it’s so interesting!), so view at your own risk if you’re squeamish.

Ambrosia did suffer one small complication that became apparent when she woke up completely from the procedure. She has developed a case of Horners Syndrome, which is the result of trauma to the nerves around the removal site. Currently her left pupil is constricted, and the third eyelid won’t retract. Statically most cats who develop this complication recover completely within a couple of weeks when the nerves heal, so we are optimistic this will be the case. It is causing her no additional discomfort and doesn’t seem to bother her.

We are very grateful to everyone who donated to her procedure and contributed to improving her quality of life. She is already experiencing this with her ability to BREATHE tonight!

Many thanks to Dr. Palmer at Palmer Animal Hospital in Myersville for getting her in so quickly. 🧡

**If you made a donation and would like a tax form, feel free to email Kristin at [email protected]

Ambrosia is all tucked in for the night, and we’ll be heading to the vet for surgery tomorrow! She’s just the sweetest girl and we’re so appreciative of everyone who contributed towards this. 🧡🐾

‼️‼️ SOS ‼️‼️

Please help us pay for Ambrosia's much needed surgery!

We have a large, unexpected expense coming for one of our foster kitties and we need your help. Ambrosia is a beautiful young female who needs an urgent surgery to remove a polyp that has spread from her ear and into her throat. It is now partially blocking her airway, so time is of the essence. We are overwhelmed with other vet bills due to recent projects, and could really use your help! Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.

Introducing Comet & Cupid! ☄️ 💘

These two super sweet boys will be visiting our rescue center for the first time tomorrow, February 9th from 12-2pm!

Comet and Cupid were born on a local farm but have been raised inside. They are about 4 1/2 months old, playful, outgoing, and absolutely love attention. If you’re in the market for a new family member, these boys shouldn’t be missed!

Video of them in comments, with a cameo from their nosy roommate Pumpkin.🧡 Comet is the white/tabby bicolor and Cupid is the solid tabby.

🐾 Meet Blue! 💙 This 13-years-young Corgi & Border Collie mix sadly had to leave the family who rescued him as a puppy -- through no fault of his own. Now, he’s settling into his AWLFC foster home and already proving to be a truly special senior guy. 💕

We’re still getting to know Blue, so he’s not available for adoption. But if you have questions or want more information, contact [email protected]. Stay tuned for updates on this sweet boy! 🐶
