Harley came to us because his breath was super stinky! After an initial oral exam during a routine visit with Dr. Krammer, we scheduled an anesthetic oral exam and treatment (formerly known as a dental cleaning). This includes full-mouth dental x-rays and dental probing to look for disease under the gum line. Healthy teeth are ultrasonically scaled and polished, like in human dental offices. Unfortunately, Harley had severe periodontal disease which is painful! Many people think a dog or cat will stop eating if they are having oral pain. This is untrue. Most animals continue to eat and live in discomfort because they have no other choice. Significant periodontal disease is best treated with extraction of the affected teeth. Harley needed 22 extractions which took two sessions of several hours each! Harley is recovering and should be healed within the next 2 weeks. His breath will be better and he will be pain-free. Harley's owner did a great job getting him treatment and is very focused on home dental care to slow the progress of additional dental disease. Your pet could likely need dental care, as 80% of dogs over the age of 3 have dental disease. Please call to schedule an exam. Early intervention is the key to avoid extensive dental work!
