The Maryland Department of Agriculture posted:

This notice is to provide an Animal Safety Alert issued by the State for the
non-tidal Potomac River due to toxic algal mats. Anatoxin was detected at higher
levels than seen before. No animal cases have been reported to date, however,
animal contact with algal mats that have washed up on the shoreline should be
avoided. These harmful algae are native to the Chesapeake Bay and occur in higher
abundances mostly during low flow, high temperatures and when specific nutrient
levels are present. Toxic algae mats are currently located in the Potomac River in
the area from Edwards Ferry to Great Falls, Montgomery County. below Williamsport to Rileys Lock.

These toxins can be quickly absorbed when ingested and are harmful to animals.
Potential signs in dogs include tremors, muscle rigidity, paralysis, convulsions,
coma, cyanosis, hypersalivation and/or death.

Livestock should be kept away from algal mats and kept out of the river.

Dog owners are advised to keep pets on leash, prevent them from eating algal
mats (in water or on shore), wash them after being in affected areas, give fresh
water to drink and contact your veterinarian if signs are noted.

We ask that you:

1) Report any incidents of dogs associated with ingestion of toxic algal mats to the
Office of the Maryland State Veterinarian by emailing
[email protected] or calling 410-841-5810, and

2) Post the CDC animal safety alert flyer in your office to help inform the public of
this hazard -https://www.cdc.gov/habs/pdf/algal_bloom_tall_card.pdf

Thank you in advance for your assistance in getting the word out to prevent future
cases. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Maryland
Department of Agriculture Animal Health Program at 410-841-5810.

With medications, fluids, surgeries, hospitalizations, and various treatment plans - We know that your vet bill can grow and grow.
That is one of the reasons we urge all our clients to practice preventative medicine with us.

*If you keep your pets up-to date on their vaccinations, you are protecting them from aggressive diseases. If your pet contracts one of those diseases, you can end up spending thousands more in treatment for that one case!

*If you spay or neuter your pet, you can avoid paying out of pocket for cancer treatment.

*If you give your pet monthly heartworm and flea/tick prevention - you will save thousands not needed to treat for heartworm, Lyme Disease, and other tick-borne diseases.

*By getting veterinarian recommended routine bloodwork, you are catching things before they become anything!

๐ŸพMost importantly - Treatment costs more than prevention - because it can cost you, your pet's health and/or life.๐Ÿพ
