We joke, but a reliable recall is imperative to trust your dog off leash. In our Day Train Programs we emphasize teaching one core behavior each day your dog is in training. We find this helps make homework assignments simple and increases success for you and your dog. This way you aren’t overwhelmed working on 4 or 5 skills at once, and can really master one before moving on to the next.
There are so many practical applications for recalling your dog.
🎾 You have a bad throw and need to call your dog off of the toy you just threw.
🐶 A barking dog walks by your yard and your dog tries to go play.
👋 A stranger who is afraid of dogs is minding their own business and your dog tries to say hello.
🐿️ A squirrel is taunting your dog at the park (we know they all do this on purpose).
Part of our philosophy in training is we want to give our dogs opportunities to go out and explore and make choices, but be able to step in to redirect them when they make less than desirable ones (cue dog rolling in 💩).

🤔 Why do we teach the “heel” command?
💡 It’s different than loose leash walking, because “heel” requires greater attention to the handler. While we don’t recommend going for an entire walk using the “heel” command, it certainly comes in handy when passing by distractions like people, dogs, squirrels or bikes.

The only kind of dog we can’t train is a lost one!
Until your dog is off leash reliable, use reliable equipment! We’ve seen far too many dogs get loose over the years simply because they have poor equipment.
🚫 Snap collars can break.
🚫 Buckle collars can be difficult to get tight enough so a dog can’t slip out (especially those with small heads)
🚫 Harnesses aren’t escape proof either (if you use one, look for the kind that cinch tighter as the dog pulls)
When your dog trains with us we use martingale collars because we know it is the safest option.

Muzzle training is great for any dog! It can simply be a distraction to proof your obedience skills, it’s necessary and tremendously helpful for dogs who often or seldom display aggression.
If your dog is, say, aggressive at the vet, and you only slap the muzzle on at the vet, then you are potentially using that tool to load your dog up and tell them it’s time to get their guard up.

One of the most common errors we see when owners are wanting to fix a problem with their dog is they forget to play!
Play and engagement are so important for training your dog and crucial to their learning.
Especially when dealing with severe behavioral issues, we tend to focus on correcting or discouraging a behavior, totally forgetting about making learning enjoyable for our dogs. It’s important to be strategic so you aren’t accidentally rewarding the wrong behavior, but you’ve got to work play into your training routine for your dog to be motivated to comply.
