Braehead Community Cats

A recent check to see how our colony cats are beating the heat. So many of them look alike, so we weren't able to identify them all conclusively, but we were very pleased to see that they all had tipped ears. There are still a few out there who haven't been fixed yet, but this is still excellent progress! Our colony used to have nearly 100 cats and kittens, but getting the adults fixed and the babies adopted out has made it a much more manageable size. Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this important mission!

Our boy Curry is the colony's most recognizable resident. With his fluffy orange pantaloons and his bobtail, he's hard to miss. If you're very lucky, you may see him with his BFF Pecan, a tabby who was fixed last summer.

Beautiful Marie, one of the first two females we trapped, still comes by to visit every few days. We love seeing our community cats living their best lives!

We love seeing our community cats when they stop by to say hi. This is one of the first two feral mothers we trapped, White Mama, now named Marie. She's been playing in this yard since she was a baby, and still visits almost daily, but it's rare that she's poses for a photo.

Very successful trapping session today! Sweet Boo walked right up to the trap before we even had it set. And Pecan is the mama to the nut bunch. We've been trying to get her since June when we caught her kittens. They will be neutered and returned by the end of the week 😻

7 year old Macadamia has likely fathered many kittens. At almost 12 lbs, he has earned the nickname Big Mac Daddy 😻. He was happy to return to the colony today and won't be contributing to the overpopulation any more

How much cuteness can you stand!? Peanut, Almond, Cashew and Pistachio were found yesterday in the woods. Mama Pecan has so far evaded capture but we'll get her reunited with her babies soon. Thanks to all the neighbors who helped spot them and cheered us on while trapping this weekend! It was a team effort 😻

I was trying to trap a white cat that's been visiting our yard with no luck. I caught this handsome guy instead! Tigger is now free to live the bachelor life without worry of rabies or fatherhood 😻

Sweet Marie spent the night before we realized that she was already tipped! Oh well 😻 She got a few good meals and an updated rabies shot. Just happy to know she won't be contributing to the overpopulation in the future!

Graceful little Grace and porky little Pork Chop both got spayed today. At 6 and 10 years old, respectively, they have had more than their share of litters, and are now joining the ranks of retired mamas in the colony. They will rest up and be released on Thanksgiving

Casserole, aka Cassie, won't be serving up any more kittens after getting fixed today. She was one of two cats we trapped on Sunday. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Marshmallow, a beautiful white female. She was 15-18 years old and had advanced cancer that couldn't be treated. Part of being caretakers for these cats is looking after their best interests, and we could not let her suffer.

Spooktober isn't quite over, and we caught 3 more cats! These wee witches will be fixed this week, bringing us to 23 adults and adolescents, plus 20 kittens in just 4 short months. Lydia, the youngest, is comfortable around humans and already has a loving home lined up. Sabrina and Wednesday go to the clinic tomorrow. Trick and Treat, just 4 months and 1 year respectively, were released this morning. That's a whopping 5 more females that won't be having any more kittens!

Bringing Spooktober to a close, meet Trick & Treat! We tricked these girls into the traps to get fixed, and they'll be treated to a weekend relaxing in the recovery zone before being released on Sunday. Be sure to check out on Instagram to see the release videos!

We thought we'd trapped a female, but Buffy is a male! He got debuffed today. He's a white polydactyl (extra toes) like so many in our colony, so he's probably contributed quite a bit to the local gene pool over the years. His breeding days are done, and he will be released tomorrow after a night in our recovery room.
