Pumpkins planted! It is hot and dry. Some rain would be welcome. Looks like we’re going to busy irrigating next week.
Last week the drip irrigation lines were placed in the pumpkin field. Shout out to our oldest granddaughter, Karis, for helping get it done.
Baling straw a couple of weeks ago. We sell the straw to a neighbor who bales and sell it to end users. It was an Ok crop due to the weather last fall causing a latter planting date than ideal. If you’re in the market for truckload(s) of straw let us know.
Here’s the roller crimper tool. If this operation is timed correctly in relation to the growth stage of the cover crop it will terminate the cover without herbicides. The resulting mat of plant material protects the soil.
I’m afraid I’m behind on my farming updates. We’ll be planting pumpkins any day now. Last month I roller crimped the rye/crimson clover cover crop that was planted last fall.
We’re open Monday 10-6. Can you Roller Bowler this well? In the Fun Barn.
New addition to the Back 40 Games area-
While we just started harvesting this year’s pumpkin crop, we are preparing for next year’s crop. The 8 feet tall, 12 species cover crop has been growing all summer to enrich the soil. Shown here is the no-till planting the winter cover crop of rye, clover and radish. Next year’s pumpkins will be planted into that.
The newest lamb here at the farm was a big single, which makes 10 babies so far in the nursery pen. Triplet goats, larry curly and moe, 3 sets of twin lambs and a single big lamb. 4 mommas left to go!
It’s almost opening weekend, we’re getting the corn box filled up!
