🌱That's right folks, we're BACK with fresh-harvested, nutrient dense winter crops for you and your family's holiday meals!
🌱Tomorrow we will have available: Sweet Winter Carrots, Spring Mix, Head Lettuces, Baby Arugula, Blue Curly Kale, Rainbow Swisschard, French Breakfast Radishes, Red, Yukon Gold and Baby White Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes and Winter Squashes!
🌱Even after our destructive first bout with the lake effect snow, we still have plenty of delicious produce to offer our wonderful community.
🌱We'll be vending from 10am to 1pm at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Fredonia.
🌱Along with a multitude of other wonderful vendors offering delicious produce and meat, baked goods and prepared meals. As well as many wonderful giftable items for your loved ones!

🌱Here's a little sneak peak at some of the fresh winter abundance that will be available at the Fredonia Farmers' Market this Saturday!
🌱We are excited to be back vending after a couple weeks of cold hiatus and we're bringing as much fresh produce as we can, so that you and your family can enjoy the most fresh, nutrient-rich produce for your holiday meals!
🌱We'll be vending from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Fredonia.
🌱Along with a multitude of other fantastic vendors offering; fresh produce, meat, eggs, baked goods and bread, prepared meals, honey, maple syrup, gormet mushrooms, local apples, organic wines, jams and jellies. As well as numerous giftable items such as pottery, candles, hats, scarves, soap, skin care and apothecary, bird houses and so much more!!
🌱We always love the market before a holiday because not only do we see the most community support, but it uplifts our spirits and makes us want to continue to do the hard work our business demands.
🌱There's never been a better time to shop local. When corporate America is showcasing RECORD PROFITS, small businesses and local entrepreneurs are just looking to make enough to get them through the holidays and the long winter ahead.

🌱Things are looking a bit Wonky over here with the snow twisting and bending our low tunnels in ways we didn't think possible!
🌱Although we have lost quite a few tunnels to the shear weight of snow, most if not all of the crops seem to be in good standing as far as we can tell.
🌱Pictured is one of our tunnels with spinach and spring mix. The weight of the snow on the northern side ended up being too much for the PVC to bare, but instead of breaking at the joint(like many of them did), they seem to have folded into a 90° angle!
🌱Salvaging as much as we can and hoping to get everything recovered and set up proper before winter really sets in again.
🌱This experience of learning to farm is nothing short of amazing.. While it is constantly teaching us hard lessons, looking back we are more thankful than anything for these chances to learn and perfect our craft.

🥕We managed to get a collapsed tunnel unburied enough today to harvest some fresh sweet winter carrots!
🥕Did you know that carrots, along with all cold hardy crops, convert their starches into sugars as a natural defense mechanism from freezing temperatures?
🥕That's why growing crops throughout the winter gives you sweet delicious produce that is packed with nutrients!
🥕Carrots aren't the only thing growing under our tunnels this winter! We're also still able to harvest Spinach, Head Lettuce, Spring Mix, Arugula, Kale, Swisschard, Green Onions, Radishes and Turnips!
🥕Now weather dependant we will be vending at as many winter indoor 's as we can.
🥕Here's to fresh food and local ABUNDANCE 12 months out of the year!

❄️Winter Wonderland out here at Maggitti Farms, nowhere to push the snow anymore!
❄️We attempted to brush off any of the Low Tunnels that were still standing after the 3ft+ of snow fall yesterday and last night.
❄️Seems we need to rethink our winter operation and build tunnels that are more suited to this type of weather, since more than half of them collapsed yesterday/last night(see picture 2 and 3)
❄️Most, if not all of the crops we still have growing are cold hardy enough to survive this lake effect storm, even with the tunnels collapsing over top of them.
❄️Once we can get ourselves fully dug out and assess the damages, we will be able to harvest for the indoor Fredonia Farmers' Market hopefully by next weekend!
❄️For what it's worth, we've been enjoying our snowpocalypse by getting excessive amounts of exercise at a very slow pace shoveling, brushing and digging.
❄️And we had the 2 best helpers a farmer could ask for along for the adventure! 🐺🐶

🧄To conclude our garlic planting post from the other day, the cloves have been tucked away underneath some nice warm blankets for the winter!
🧄We decided to go with a triple mulching method this season: chopped up leaves, loosened up straw and a row cover to hold the organic material in place.
🧄The row cover is not entirely necessary and we will need to take it off once the garlic starts pushing against it from below. However, we lost a lot of our mulching materials last year to high winds, so this is our solution to that problem.
🧄We would like to give a huge shout out to Steve Taylor for sharing his wonderful garlic genetics with us last season.
🧄We grew by far some of the best tasting and biggest bulbs we have every grown thanks to the seed garlic he shared with us. He truly is a Garlic Wizard!

🧄Garlic Planting Season is upon us!
🧄We finished our second bed of 1,500 or so cloves, bringing us to a grand total of roughly 3,000 bulbs for next season.
🧄This always feels like the culmination of the season, our last major planting of 2024 before winter truly sets in.
🧄We're excited about this planting, as it is all second year seed garlic we saved ourselves!
🧄Now to layer on several different types of mulch to give them a nice warm blanket to grow under until spring.

🌱Another wonderful year of CSA shares and distributions is in the books!
🌱We completed our 24th distribution of the season yesterday, with smiles and nostalgic conversation about the summer crops that have come and gone.

🌱We could not be more thankful and filled with gratitude for the individuals who participated in our Community Supported Agriculture(CSA) Program this season.
🌱Our dreams of sustainable community-centered regenerative agriculture are made possible by our Members continued trust and support.
🌱As we start to feel the days getting shorter and the nights getting colder, it's time for us to take a step back and breath deeply into our time of rest for the season.
🌱Most of our beds are flipped over from their summer inhabitants to their cold hardy successors in preparation for the changing seasons.
🌱We will be accepting new CSA memberships for the 2025 season starting mid-winter, once we have given the existing members first dibs on signing up again for the next season.

🌱Our final delivery of produce to Grow Chautauqua food distributions made possible by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County and Brigiotta's Farmland Produce and Garden Center !
🌱What a fantastic program this has been! No stipulations, just weekly free boxes of food grown or hand made by local farmers and artisans.
🌱We truly are blessed to have such an abundance of local farms in our area and this program did a wonderful job of highlighting that!
🌱Thank you to everyone behind the scenes making it happen week in and week out, we truly appreciate your hard work!
🌱Although this program is coming to an end(for this season), the Fredonia Farmers' Market is still happening every Saturday, all winter long.
🌱Continue to relish and enjoy the delicious fresh nutrient rich abundance of our local farms and artisans by joining us at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street in Fredonia, Saturdays 10am - 1pm.

🎃 Join us for the Halloween Edition of the Fredonia Farmers' Market and our FINAL outdoor Market before we move indoors to the Masonic Temple on East Main Street next weekend.
🎃 We'll have lots of fresh harvested, organically and regeneratively grown produce available and some of our LAST summer crops before we switch all of our beds over to winter production.
🎃 We'll be vending along side lots of other hard working families, offering their hand crafted goods and services.

🌱Our regenerative no-till half acre urban farm is slowly changing from summer crops into white blanketed winter crops!
🌱We are a Four-Seasons Farm, or as some others might call it... bat-sh*t crazy!
🌱Pictured here is 10 beds of newly seeded winter crops, which include: French Breakfast Radishes, Gormet Spring Mix, Bloomsdale Spinach, Baby Kale + Hakurei Turnips.
🌱As soon as our summer crops are taken out of their beds, we immediately prep those beds and plant new seeds or transplants for winter.
🌱The delay in between never exceeds more than 24 - 48hours, this is not only due to us running low on available planting time, but also has an effect on the soil activity and over-all health.
🌱The microbiome of the soil, comprised of fungi, microbes and earth worms, all need/prefer to have plant roots and photosynthesising plants to keep their symbiotic relationship going.
🌱We are regenerating our soil by always keeping plant roots in the soil, when a summer crop comes out, we cut the plant off just below the soil level to allow the roots, where all the microbiology is to stay structured within the soil.
🌱Once the newly transplanted or direct seeded plants roots begin to grow, the living organisms migrate from the dead decaying root system of the previous crop and onto the new seedling bursting with vigor. It's really quite miraculous!

🌱 French Breakfast Radishes, Baby Rainbow Swisschard and Rainbow Carrots!
🌱Our mission to supply fresh, healthy, nutrient dense sustenance to our community would not be possible without the support and participation of our wonderful CSA members!
🌱It's our extreme pleasure to offer them fresh, same-day harvested vegetables all season long, grown using organic and regenerative agriculture practices.
🌱As we near the end of this growing season, we can't help but feel nostalgic of the summer crops that exceeded our expectations once again!

🌱Moving into the colder nights and shorter days, we are busy getting all of our beds switched over for winter production.
