🧄To conclude our garlic planting post from the other day, the cloves have been tucked away underneath some nice warm blankets for the winter!
🧄We decided to go with a triple mulching method this season: chopped up leaves, loosened up straw and a row cover to hold the organic material in place.
🧄The row cover is not entirely necessary and we will need to take it off once the garlic starts pushing against it from below. However, we lost a lot of our mulching materials last year to high winds, so this is our solution to that problem.
🧄We would like to give a huge shout out to Steve Taylor for sharing his wonderful garlic genetics with us last season.
🧄We grew by far some of the best tasting and biggest bulbs we have every grown thanks to the seed garlic he shared with us. He truly is a Garlic Wizard!
🧄If you're looking for fresh delicious local garlic to cook with or if you just want to supercharge your immune system this winter, you can find his garlic for sale at the Indoor on Roo Haven Farm 's Table, Saturdays 10am to 1pm at the Masonic Lodge on Main Street!

🧄Garlic Planting Season is upon us!
🧄We finished our second bed of 1,500 or so cloves, bringing us to a grand total of roughly 3,000 bulbs for next season.
🧄This always feels like the culmination of the season, our last major planting of 2024 before winter truly sets in.
🧄We're excited about this planting, as it is all second year seed garlic we saved ourselves!
🧄Now to layer on several different types of mulch to give them a nice warm blanket to grow under until spring.

🌱Another wonderful year of CSA shares and distributions is in the books!
🌱We completed our 24th distribution of the season yesterday, with smiles and nostalgic conversation about the summer crops that have come and gone.
🍅🌶️🥒🌽🍆
🌱We could not be more thankful and filled with gratitude for the individuals who participated in our Community Supported Agriculture(CSA) Program this season.
🌱Our dreams of sustainable community-centered regenerative agriculture are made possible by our Members continued trust and support.
🌱As we start to feel the days getting shorter and the nights getting colder, it's time for us to take a step back and breath deeply into our time of rest for the season.
🌱Most of our beds are flipped over from their summer inhabitants to their cold hardy successors in preparation for the changing seasons.
🌱We will be accepting new CSA memberships for the 2025 season starting mid-winter, once we have given the existing members first dibs on signing up again for the next season.

🌱Our regenerative no-till half acre urban farm is slowly changing from summer crops into white blanketed winter crops!
🌱We are a Four-Seasons Farm, or as some others might call it... bat-sh*t crazy!
🌱Pictured here is 10 beds of newly seeded winter crops, which include: French Breakfast Radishes, Gormet Spring Mix, Bloomsdale Spinach, Baby Kale + Hakurei Turnips.
🌱As soon as our summer crops are taken out of their beds, we immediately prep those beds and plant new seeds or transplants for winter.
🌱The delay in between never exceeds more than 24 - 48hours, this is not only due to us running low on available planting time, but also has an effect on the soil activity and over-all health.
🌱The microbiome of the soil, comprised of fungi, microbes and earth worms, all need/prefer to have plant roots and photosynthesising plants to keep their symbiotic relationship going.
🌱We are regenerating our soil by always keeping plant roots in the soil, when a summer crop comes out, we cut the plant off just below the soil level to allow the roots, where all the microbiology is to stay structured within the soil.
🌱Once the newly transplanted or direct seeded plants roots begin to grow, the living organisms migrate from the dead decaying root system of the previous crop and onto the new seedling bursting with vigor. It's really quite miraculous!

🌱We offered 3 new colorful items this week in our CSA Members shares.
🌱 French Breakfast Radishes, Baby Rainbow Swisschard and Rainbow Carrots!

🌱It's our extreme pleasure to offer them fresh, same-day harvested vegetables all season long, grown using organic and regenerative agriculture practices.
🌱As we near the end of this growing season, we can't help but feel nostalgic of the summer crops that exceeded our expectations once again!

🌱While we do not run a winter CSA program(yet), we do vend all winter long at the indoor Fredonia Farmers' Market starting the first week in November!

🌱Before fertilizers and human interventions, nature had things pretty well figured out!
🌱We work into our own methods and practices natural ways of fertilizing, replenishing the soil fertility and keeping a healthy active unseen microbiome within our soils.
🌱Here we have two Bush Bean beds at the end of their natural cycle.
🌱After a final harvest, we pulled up one plants roots to check on their nodular growths! To our great pleasure, these Beans had produced more nodule growth than any other Bean crop we've had in the past!
🌱Beans are a naturally nitrogen fixing plant and these nodule growths are atmospheric nitrogen that the Plant has pulled out of the air and stored in the soil on it's roots(see 4th picture).
🌱Now the key to give the following succession crop in these beds access to this fixed nitrogen is to LEAVE THE PLANTS ROOTS IN THE GROUND.
🌱We can't say it loud enough... By pulling a bean plants roots out, we are not only taking away the stored up nitrogen the plant has so graciously fixed into the soil, but we're also destroying the complex microbiome of Bacteria and Fungi that the plants have built up over their 3 month life span.
🌱This goes for all plants, not just nitrogen fixing ones. Leaving our spent crops roots in the ground is one of the absolute best things we can do to regenerate our soils health.
🌱So instead of pulling out the plants, we decided to buzz them all down with a hedge trimmer and simply top with a fresh layer of sifted compost before re-seeding.
🌱These newly emptied beds will be planted in fall/winter harvest Carrots and over-wintering Kale.
🌱Both of these crops will greatly appreciate the extra boost of nitrogen the Bean plant roots have left behind. Utilizing it to grow quicker and healthier before we start to get into frosts and lake effect snow!

🌱We are Maggitti Farms, a high intensity small scale regenerative no-till urban farm.
🌱Supplying our local Village of Fredonia Community with fresh-harvested nutrient-dense and organically grown vegetables from our half acre farm.
🌱We cultivate vegetables using very specific regenerative agriculture practices, this directly translates to building a healthy soil microbiome which in turn increases the production and nutrient density of our crops.
🌱Human health and wellness directly correlates with the nutrient density of the food we consume. That is why it is our top focus for our agriculture methods and practices.
🌱We started out gardening as a hobby, but before long realized the importance of fresh produce and the need that every community has for locally grown food.
🌱Fast forward to the present day, we are hosting a hundred member CSA program, sell direct to consumer at our local Fredonia Farmers' Market , supply fresh produce to local restaurants and offer what we can to Rural Ministries and Grow Chautauqua food programs.
🌱We would not be where we are today without the immense love and support we have been blessed with by our community members!
