Social Eaters
As a professional pet sitter, I have seen many dogs (and cats) who will only eat if I stay quietly in the kitchen with them while they eat their meal.
I am pet sitting this week for a sweet little kitty who will only eat her meals if I stand quietly by the sink, not saying anything and just being there. Oh- and being very quiet as she is sound sensitive. If I try to go out of the room to do chores, she walks out with me, so I stay. Social eating is not as common in cats, but it does exist.
I always stay in the kitchen with the dogs because having a certain amount of time on the pet sitting visits, it is very important that they eat their meals.
They usually finish all their food, sometimes needing extra encouragement from me to finish eating.Encouragement is simply saying “good boy/ good girl, eat”or “Go ahead, eat“. “Finish”.
And then comes the “good boy “good girl” when they done with their food.
Sometimes it takes a couple of treats broken up in their bowls on top of their food to renew their interest.
Dogs may do this just because they are social beings who want to be part of the greater whole; the pack. Sometimes they have a little underlying anxiety and need the encouragement and sometimes they’re just easily distracted.
Cats, like the one I am pet sitting, may be a little nervous and find your presence reassuring.
This may also come in to play if there are multiple pets in the household and one may be feeling vulnerable while they eat. Especially if another pet likes to help themselves to what’s in their bowl and move them out of the way.
Staying with them while they eat is a great way to quietly change the dynamics within your multi-pet household as well.
It is really important that our pets eat all their food to live a balanced life emotionally and physically.
Sometimes all it takes is a few minutes out of your day to keep your dog or cat company while they eat so they are on track and most of all happy and healthy.

CALM
Dogs, like all animals are intuitive.
They pick up on your emotions, your stress, your happiness and excitement.
If you want your dog to be calmer, then practice promoting a calmer environment for them.
This could be as simple as starting or starting back at the basics in terms of commands. Commands are simply cues as to what we want them to do or how we want them to behave.
We forget that these furry creatures we love so much and think of as our family members do not actually understand the language we speak.
So they compensate by listening to the tone of voice, the volume of voice, whether we are speaking softly, yelling at them to stop or speaking in a neutral tone. They then respond to each of these in kind.
So the calmer your interactions with them are, the calmer they will be.
Puppies or young dogs who have had no training by their people don’t really know how to behave in the household.
They have no direction and absolutely no idea why you get so upset sometimes at the things they do.
They don’t know what’s acceptable and what’s not and they don’t know what it means when sometimes they get in trouble for something and sometimes it’s okay just because their human is distracted or too tired to react that particular time.
Training or setting boundaries for your dog is a completely healthy thing to do!
It is the best way to do right by your dog.
It is setting them up to show you positive behavior. It is preparing them to blend into the household instead of detracting from it.
It is really just showing your dog what you expect from them in a calm and positive way.
Are they jumping on you when you walk into the house? Each and every time? Are they jumping on guests? If so, work with them in a CALM and positive way to show them not to and give them a treat- their reward (and training mechanism) for exhibiting the right or wanted behavior instead of the one you don’t. Inconsistency breeds chaos, especially in the

Here is a tip for when your cat walks away from their food, which for them is natural since they are natural born grazers when it comes to food. Very few cats will eat their whole portion in one sitting.
When jungle cats were in the wild, they used to catch prey, eat what they wanted, and then bury the rest to keep predators away. This is why your cat attempts to bury their food.
They are concealing the food from predators by doing this. Cats retain so much of their wild instincts and that’s one of the things that is so fascinating about them. The next time your cat walks away from their food after eating a little bit add a little bit of water from a teaspoon, preferably filtered water, and stir the food up to the middle of the bowl to refresh it so they will be interested in it again.
Sometimes I have to do this a couple times, but it definitely works to help them eat more when they’re ready, otherwise they may not go back to the bowl because the food isn’t fresh. It is “fresh” then and evokes a similarity to how their ancestors ate their food in the wild.
Happy cat, happy life!

The best things you can do to have the best dog!
Routine.
All dogs need to be on a routine, which starts in puppyhood and then evolves as they grow.
Routines with your dog would be your day to day lives with them.
The times you take them out, the times you feed them. This should be a set time but with a little wiggle room.
It doesn’t have to be the exact time, but it should be within an hour or so of their usual.
Imagine your entire life, safety, and well being dependent on someone. This is what your dog experiences. Their entire lives are in your control and that’s why it’s so important not to leave them wondering what is going to happen next.
If you adopt an adult dog, you can easily get them onto your routine. Keep in mind that with adopted dogs or dogs who have been rehomed, that it may take up to one year to fully settle into their new home and environment. Be patient and have a routine.

Schedule.
The schedule, simply put is one of the most important things in a dog’s life.
Having a schedule for going out whether it’s letting them out into your yard accompanied or taking them on walks is key. Not making your dog wait too long to go outside is also key. This all needs to be done on a schedule.
I’m an advocate for walks. Even if your dog is let out, they need some walks during the day to experience the world.
Dog’s sniffing the scents of other dog’s and people and the other stimulus outside is what mentally awakens and stimulates them. It keeps them from bored. We all know that if a dog is bored they get themselves into trouble. This can also manifest in an anxious dog and anxious behavior.
Having a schedule is so important for a happy, well adjusted dog.

Socialization.
Walking your dog is also the way to socialize them.
This does not necessarily mean going up to every person and dog you meet. It means maintaining control of your dog on the walk allowing them to see people other dogs at a distance.

Don’t go shopping for a pet sitter.
Hi All,
As many of you know I’m a licensed, insured professional Pet Sitter in business for almost 17 years coming up next month.
I want to address something that has come up mostly within the past few years.
This is not something that I’ve not encountered prior to now.
I find that people are shopping for a pet sitter.
I recently spoke to someone who contacted another Pet Sitter out of the area whom I know and communicate with.
She couldn’t accommodate all of the time that the potential client needed so she called me, we spoke and she turned the call over to me because it was in the area that borders both of us pet sitters.
The potential client had gotten a cancellation from a nonprofessional pet sitter very shortly before they were due to leave for an international trip.
I dropped everything to take a phone call and was going to meet with them that same evening, and was going to expedite a very time efficient consultation appointment to meet with them and their dog before we proceeded.
They kept putting it off- remember we were supposed to meet a few hours after we had the initial conversation and when they called back I asked them what the hesitation was?
I was told that they contacted about eight people and were waiting to see what they had to say. Eight. And they were shopping price.
I knew right then he was not speaking about licensed pet sitters.
If you can imagine my hand smacking my forehead in that moment you would be right because that’s exactly what happened!
The truth of the matter is, this person was lucky to get the original pet sitter on the phone who was trying to accommodate them last minute and when she realized she couldn’t accomodate all the days they needed for pet care, she reached out to me. They were lucky to get me on the phone as well, as we have both been in business a long time and always try to help our clients and potential clients are in a bind.

Kerry/ Pet Sitter
In life and as a pet sitter I find myself very lucky to have had both dogs and cats in my life from an early age.
I have experience with and knowledge of both dogs and cats.
I have a deep connection with both and I do feel fortunate in my life for that.
This is, after all, what led me to starting my pet sitting business in 2007.
I am happiest in my life when I share it with animals, getting to experience the deep bond across species that is truly amazing. I thank God for it every day.
I have a greater than average understanding of cats and all the mysteries they hold.
Years ago I did kitten socialization, was part of a trap, neuter, release (TNR) effort and have done trapping for both feral and lost cats.
I have recovered upwards of nine lost house cats over the past few years. I say upwards of nine because it didn’t occur to me initially to keep track of my recovery efforts, as it came from my heart.
A house cat does not know how to survive outside, they don’t have the acquired double coat that feral cats have, and they lack the skills.
Cats are very complex creatures. They are not transparent as dogs are. They are often and widely misunderstood.
My knowledge of animal behavior and cat behavior specifically speaking here- which is very unique and complex- is also what helps me to bring expertise to pet sitting.
Cats sometimes don’t give all of their affection and love to a pet sitter right away. They make me work for it! And work I do, because the reward is amazing.
I’ve had clients tell me that I won’t see their cat during the time they’re away, but we become fast friends.
Animals naturally gravitate to me which is a huge part of why I was drawn to owning a pet sitting business.
I am here for all your cat sitting needs.
I feel the dogs sometimes steal the spotlight in a lot of my posts, so let’s level the playing field. If you need an expert pet sitter who has innate knowledge of cats, please reach out.

Pet Parents:
Always use a licensed and insured Professional Pet Sitter meaning their business is licensed with the State and they carry Liability Insurance and sometimes Bonding Insurance.
Liabilty Insurance protects your home and pets in the care custody and control of a professional pet sitter. (I have been in business for 16 years and have never used my liability insurance.) Every professional Pet Sitter will carry it.
Rover and Wag sitters are not professional pet sitters.
The corporations they work under are businesses which take a percentage of the fee for each job in exchange for a small amount of liability insurance provided. The sitters may or may not be qualified to take care of your pets.
Always, use a professional pet sitter.
We are the ones who will move heaven and earth to take care of your pets.
This is not only our job. It is our love, our passion and dedication to your pets which makes the sacrifices of owning a business where our workdays extend to twelve hours, nights, weekends and holidays worth it because we LOVE taking care of animals. We LOVE what we do and this makes all the difference in how we do the job of taking care of other people’s animals. Your animals.

Did you know that cats are Lactose Intolerant?

08/12/2024

People need to 🛑 STOP the insanity of trapping random cats and then posting them on Facebook offering them to strangers to “re-home”, giving them to someone else, or taking them to animal shelters.
NO!! This is NOT humane!
Outside cats who are very calm are usually Indoor/ Outdoor Cats. They have an owner.
They not showing fear because they’re used to being outside.
They’re friendly to people because they’re used to encountering them.
Indoor only cats who get out of their home stay hidden. When they do become visible it is usually several weeks after they get out.
There are so many posts on Facebook of people that think themselves rescuers, interfering and trapping cats randomly.
None of them make an effort to find the owner.
They post it on social media and think they’re done.
What they have done is break the law and traumatize a cat and break the heart of cat’s owner.
Animals in New Jersey and many other States consider (by law) animals to be property~ meaning that the property of the animal’s owner.
If you interfering this way, you are stealing a cat.
No one has the right to trap a cat randomly and relocate it.
If you don’t agree with Indoor/ Outdoor Cats, that’s fine, they’re still not yours to trap. They have an owner.
Trapping a cat outside of a purpose such as of a legitimate rescue group’s TNR effort is inhumane.
Trapping a random cat you know with evidence who is outside for a long period of time who is sick, starving and needs help, should only be done if you are prepared to follow the law and notify police and animal control as well as make an effort to locate the owner if the cat is not microchipped.
Lost cats don’t go far from home. Indoor/ Outdoor Cats are usually known in the neighborhood.
Trapping is an extremely important responsibility. You are no one’s hero if you are randomly trapping cats you see outside.

Kerry/ Pet Sitter
Today the temperature is 79 and the humidity is 87! When the humidity is close to the temperature reading it is a day~or a summer as in our case~ to keep the walks and outside time for your dog SHORT!
Dogs cannot dissipate their body heat the way humans can. Dogs pant. Humans sweat. Sweating is a much more efficient way to cool the body.
A dog’s normal body temperature is 100.5-102.5. If it reaches 105 or more they are at risk for heatstroke.
Some signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke are excessive panting, a red, blue or purple tinged tongue, (which means the oxygen isn’t getting to their brain) excessive drooling, excessive panting, agitation, loss of coordination or dizziness, lethargy. There are more symptoms as well.
As pet parents we never want to see these symptoms in dogs so always remember that you cool your body in different ways than your dog does and take steps to keep them indoors with short potty breaks in extreme heat or humidity.
