Nitro's fear free win!
Meet Nitro. This handsome dude has been coming in almost weekly since MAY!!! Nitro has significant fear and anxiety with any handling which is manifested as growling, lunging and barking. His amazing mom has been driving an hour each way almost every Friday for almost 5 months to slowly build a relationship with Dr Cote. In addition to this, Nitro's mom has been conditioning Nitro to comfortably wear a muzzle so we can interact safely at the clinic.
Today was the culmination of all this hard work. Nitro had his blood drawn and had an injection of #ProHeart12 which will provide a year's worth of protection against heartworms. Nitro has a sensitive tummy so the standard oral heartworm preventatives arent a good option for him.
We are so grateful for the trust and hard-work that Nitro's mom put in. Nitro is now 100% comfy in his muzzle. This is a skill that will serve him well for years to come. Muzzle training isn't just for scared pups. Every dog should feel comfortable wearing a muzzle. It's a life skill!!

Co-Operative Veterinary Care Training: Bringing Comfort to Your Companion
We have many techniques designed at reducing the fear of our patients when they come to see us, you've probably seen videos of us feeding peanut butter or other treats to our patients to distract or calm them during procedures. Some patients, however are so nervous that they need a little extra help! One of the services we offer is private sessions with either Fear Free Certified Tech or Veterinarian where we use behavioral modifcation and positive reinforcement based training methods aimed at teaching co-operative care techniques. In these sessions we create patterns for the dog that walk them through the process of exam, vaccination, blood draws and any other care they might need.
In this video, Dr. Cote is having her first session with Basho, a cattle dog who was VERY scared of the vet. Basho has had a few sessions already with Mim, one of our Fear Free techs and has already learned how to calmly have his vaccines! Now he is working with Dr. Cote to get his exam, before we begin training for his blood draw.
No two pets are the same, and neither should their Fear Free approach to Vet Care.
Do you think your dog might benefit from some veterinary training? Ask any of our team members for more information!
