“Dogs die. But dogs live, too. Right up until they die, they live. They live brave, beautiful lives. They protect their families. And love us. And make our lives a little brighter. And they don't waste time being afraid of tomorrow.”

Everyone loses their temper from time to time. We get it. Unfortunately, sometimes our pets end up on the receiving end of anger because they’re simply the ones who are in close proximity when the stuff hits the fan. But yelling at your pup is anything but innocuous. Just because they don’t unde...

A fun visual representation of what your dog sees (smells) every day. Look at how noisy it is and how many tracks there are intertwining. The different animals, people, and dogs movement in just one area. The snow lets us humans see the history of this area and what animals and people have passed through. A dog will smell this every day and know who and what animals have passed through. Smellavision!!!!

Dogs are incredible.

Imagine tracking and detection dogs needing to filter out all this noise and track a single scent down. Amazing!

(Note this is a fun representation, not accurate)

You and your dog will learn important strategies to handle the holiday crowd with smooth introductions to friends, family, and any furry tagalongs. Discover ways to tell when your dog is feeling the holiday spirit versus needing a break from the party. Practice skills that will help your dog decompress and allow you to enjoy the festivities. As you may know, Lincoln, a 5 year old German Shepherd and my bestie, was neutered yesterday due to an enlarged prostate. I was able to be in a quiet room with him while he was sedated, and after surgery he woke up with me there. For most dogs, I believe having their person actively present to support them is much less stressful.

This is my last piece for Veterinary Practice News as the EBVM columnist. I chose to focus on the open veterinary hospital model, which I have been a proponent of for many years.

For the most part, I strongly agree with this. I do think there are some dogs who do fine separated from their people, and in some cases, may actually do better separated. For those who have especially close relationships with their dogs, I feel strongly the team should remain together, except for surgery, severe emergencies, etc.

why do vets take your pet to the back

09/21/2022

If I passed before my dog(s), I would ask for permission to return just to say goodbye; to let my dog(s) know that God called me, and that I didn't abandon them.

I would tell them I want them to take care of themself (and each other), and that in the meantime, I'll be waiting for them.

I would give them one last kiss, one last hug, and tell them that they are the best things that have ever happened to me. That I have loved each with all my heart & I've loved them the most.

If I pass first, give me permission to tell them that. And especially to tell them that when we finally meet again, it will be forever.
