Thank you to all of this years clients!
The last week has been a whirlwind and we have lots of work to do here in the shop. We are still accepting skulls, just want to take a second to tell you about our process. We focus on quality so that your skull is as memorable as your hunting experience was to harvest your trophy.
A natural skull that is NOT perfectly bleach white is our goal and we feel it gives the best presentation of your trophy. Natural bone
We receive the skull, tag and they go into a cooler. The skulls get processed in the same order in which we received them. We de-hide the skull and remove the eyes and brain. We then freeze the skull for 24-48 hours to kill any fly larva and hiding insects that could hurt or deplete our beetle colonies.
We place a thawed skull into the beetles and they typically take about 3-4 days to remove all material. Most think this is the end of the process, unfortunately it is not (that would be too easy..lol)
The skulls come out of the beetles and still are discolored and are full of bone grease. Grease overtime can leach out and turn a nice white skull into a tarnished brown. To counter this we remove the grease by soaking for around 12-14 days with a special degreasing agent in 120 degree water. This pulls out majority of the grease.
After a clean rinse, they dry for a day.
If visible grease is present, they go back in to degrease. If they are clean, we then go directly to a 35% peroxide bath for 24 hours.
After another rinse they dry for a day and then we use a paste peroxide and coat which really helps with the teeth whitening and final whitening of the skull. Rinse and then dry completely.
To seal the final bone we coat the entire skull in a watered down white Elmer’s glue mixture. This preserves all the bone and naturally gives the skull a natural bone color.
We touch up any antler base to give a natural look and match the original colors.
At this point we mount to a plaque or give ya a call to pick up your finished skull.
It is hard to put a “turn around time” on your skull. Typically I would say a a month or two. That depends a lot on when we received the skull and how fast the beetles are cleaning. We want to get it done for you, but also do not want to give you a bad product.
Boiling process….not used by us anymore - I used to use the boil technique as it is fast and easy. Over the years the skulls that I have done by boiling have leached grease and do not look great overtime. The bone becomes very brittle and they can deteriorate. Nothing against those who boil skulls, heck I didn’t for a long time, yet I feel with a bit more work (quite a lot actually) doing it my current way it is far more quality skull work.
With a barn full of skulls currently, we are working as fast as we can to get your trophy back to you. We can only work as fast as the beetles can and they have lots of work to do!
We ask for your patience as we do our best to give your a trophy you can be proud to display.
Brian Deur and myself (Rick) have full time jobs, young busy families and find ourselves in the barn most nights past midnight. A special thanks to Brian, it would be very overwhelming if it was not for his assistance and help.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Well…it’s just past 9pm, time to go to work!
We hope you enjoy the remainder of the deer hunting season!
