Next time you feel inspired to buy yourself a bouquet at the grocery store or farmer’s market, don’t forget that certain blooms are HIGHLY toxic for cats! Popular springtime flowers such as daffodils, tulips, daisies, and lilies are poisonous to cats, and as cats can climb and jump onto surfaces that often seem “out of the way,” they can pose a serious danger to their health.

If you catch your cat eating a flower and you are unsure if it's poisonous, take the following steps before contacting your veterinarian:

1. Carefully remove any of the flower from your cat’s hair and mouth.

2. Monitor your cat closely and keep them inside.

3. Call Animal Poison Control: 1-888-426-4435.

If your cat has developed symptoms such as skin or eye irritation, vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing, call us immediately at 510-657-6343.

If you’re planning to take advantage of those rare gaps in the clouds to head out for a hike with your furry friend, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind:

1. Check the weather conditions before heading out. Heavy rain increases the risk of landslides, so it's best to avoid hiking right after a storm.

2. Be extremely cautious of hills! Find flatter, more level ground to walk on if possible, and stick to well-worn trails.

3. Be aware of your surroundings and look out for fallen rocks, debris, and cracks in the soil.

4. Keep your furry friend on a leash and within your line of sight at all times!

5. As always, keep our phone number handy in case of injury: 510-657-6343. We’re here for you both, 24/7, rain or shine!

If possible, stick to your neighborhood sidewalks or your favorite dog park until we’ve had at least a couple weeks of dry, sunny weather, and check your local weather to stay up-to-date with landslide reports and forecasts.

03/31/2023

Tick-borne illnesses, such as Lyme disease, pose a serious and sometimes deadly threat to your pet’s health and well-being. If you’re looking forward to spending time exploring the great outdoors together, you can check your pet for ticks afterward by running your fingers over their entire body (including between their toes and inside their ears) and feeling for bumps or swollen areas. These highly dangerous parasites can be black, brown, or tan, and will have eight legs, like a spider.

If you find a tick on your pet, you can remove it by extracting it slowly with a tick remover tool. Be sure to wear gloves, wash your hands, and clean the open wound with an antiseptic right away. Keep an eye on the wound and contact your primary care veterinarian if it remains irritated or becomes infected.

If your regular vet is unavailable or your pet is exhibiting symptoms of tick-borne illness such as fever, appetite loss, and/or swollen joints, call us anytime - day or night - at 510-657-6343.

The holiday season is officially here and with shopping and wrapping and baking and visiting family and friends, this month might just end up being the busiest of the entire year. Whether you play host for the big gathering or are planning a family getaway, it's important to remember how the hustle and bustle of this time of year can affect our furry friends.

If your home is the hub for the holiday festivities, consider whether your pet might be overwhelmed by the unfamiliar guests in their "territory," and whether they experience anxiety from being around a lot of people and noise. If so, you might consider creating a quiet and cozy space away from the party where your pup or kitty can feel calm and at ease. Fill that room with their favorite toys, a blanket or bed, and maybe a bone or treat to enjoy. Advise your house guests that the space is off-limits, and have a designated family member your pet knows and trusts check in on them from time to time.

If you're planning to travel over the holidays and leave your four-legged friends at home, make sure the family member or pet sitter who will be watching them knows what to do in case of an emergency. Save our phone number: (510) 657-6343, and put it somewhere visible and easy to access, such as on the refrigerator or near your pet's food and supplies.

For more tips and guidance on how to keep your pet safe during the holidays, check out this post: [link Thanksgiving safety post once published] and for a helpful tool for pet sitters and dog walkers, find our downloadable and printable checklist here: https://beacon.vet/pet-sitter-resources/

Have a safe and happy holiday season, from our Beacon Veterinary Specialists family to yours!

11/24/2022

Did you know that the day after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the entire YEAR for emergency veterinary care? With all the chaos and excitement of having a house full of family, friends, and delicious food, it's all too easy to lose track of what our furry friends are up to. Turkey bones and trash cans in the kitchen are so tempting, and out-of-town relatives can be sneaky about slipping your pup something from the table. Consider this your Thanksgiving Day PSA to keep an eye on your pets, or find someone who can be responsible for keeping your four-legged family members calm, content, and away from mischief. You might even consider letting your guests know the household pet rules and routines ahead of time, just so they can be aware and respectful of those boundaries while they're in your home.

If your pet happens to have a holiday mishap or indulges in something they shouldn't by accident, we're always here - 24/7 - to provide compassionate, professional, and comprehensive care when you need it most. Save our phone number and bookmark our website so you can easily call, get directions, and fill out new patient forms online to save time if an emergency happens to arise during your Turkey Day festivities.

Call us at (510) 657-6343, or visit us online at https://beacon.vet.

From all of us at Beacon Veterinary Specialists, we wish you and your loved ones (furry and otherwise) a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! We're so thankful for you today and every day, and for your continued confidence in our care for those moments when you and your pet need someone you can turn to and trust.

If your pet is experiencing mobility impairment due to injury, or if you've been looking for an orthopedics team you can trust, give us a call at (510) 657-6343 to schedule your one-on-one consultation with a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who will provide professional insight, peace of mind, and answers to any questions you might have along the way.

"Where do I even begin? My dog (Jaxson) had a sudden [CCL] tear July 2021 and Dr. Fitch was recommended by name, so I made the appointment and they got him in within the week for his surgery. Dr. Fitch was so thorough and answered all my questions, staff were attentive, detail oriented, had quick follow up response times, etc. - they were truly great. So, it's no surprise that even though I moved an hour away from Fremont, when Jaxson started having issues with the other knee, I brought him back to Beacon. Jaxson just discharged from his second [TPLO] with Beacon and Dr. Fitch and the experience has been the same as above; I have nothing but good things to say about this place! I see a lot of comments about pricing & I will say after I researched a bit, I technically could've gotten Jaxson's surgery for cheaper at a different Vet. However, even knowing that, I still would've chosen Beacon for the 2nd surgery. I also think in some sense, you pay for what you get & Dr. Fitch is top notch. And, with that said, staff still did what they could to minimize costs for us. Highly recommend this place if your dog is needing TPLO surgery."

10/07/2022

We've rarely met a dog who doesn't love playing fetch, and some of the best memories we have with our dogs are the hours we spend throwing and waiting and watching them fly after that trusty, timeless tennis ball. As the world of dog toys continues to get more and more innovative, you may have come across a relatively new contraption that helps humans throw that tennis ball faster and harder and further, making your dog run faster and harder and further to retrieve it. While this seems like a great idea in theory, these devices can actually have negative effects.

Our dogs don't know that they might be over-exerting themselves when they play, and it's not uncommon that pups who play a little too hard pull muscles, tear ligaments, or injure joints in their attempt to optimize the fun and push, push, push during playtime. Try to set time limits and be watchful for any signs of injury or strain if you use one of these fetch-helpers, and give us a call at (510) 657-6343 if you notice any soreness, stiffness, limping or any other indication that your pet is experiencing physical pain. At Beacon, our orthopedic team is board-certified, highly professional and acclaimed, and our compassionate, comprehensive rehabilitation care will have your furry friend running, playing, and feeling like their best self again in no time.

National Dog Day just might be one of our favorite days of the year...how could we not LOVE a holiday dedicated to tail wags, playtimes, and so many snuggles with our furry best friends?

08/19/2022

It's that time of year: back-to-school is upon us once again! As we gear up for longer days, busier schedules, and less time spent at home, our furry friends are often forgotten in the hustle and bustle of commutes, extracurriculars, and new routines. Pets who were used to having the whole family home and kids playing with them all summer long now face an adjustment they can't understand: more time spent alone. For anxious pets or those with abandonment issues, this can be a scary and difficult transition. Our advice?

Set aside some time each day to spend with your furry friend as a family. Whether it's a snuggle session with your kitty, a walk around the block with your pup, or an evening trip to the local park, establishing a sense of routine that's centered around having fun and being together isn't just healthy for your pet, it's a great way to make sure that family time doesn't get buried under all the homework assignments and obligations that come with this season.

If you have an anxious pet, or if your pet exhibits destructive behavior when left alone for long periods of time, ask your primary care veterinarian how you can support your pet's health and happiness during this transition. If your pet is having abnormal accidents in the house while you're away, such as vomiting or diarrhea, or is showing signs of lethargy and/or loss of appetite, give us a call at (510) 657-6343.

Wildfire season is an inescapable reality for most Californians, as is planning and being ready for the evacuation we hope we will never have to face. At Beacon, being prepared for emergencies is kind of our thing, so we want to take this opportunity to remind you to check your pet’s tags and make sure the information on them is entirely up-to-date. In the unlikely (yet possible) event that you are separated from your pet in a state of emergency, the first responders whose job it is to protect our community will have a much easier time returning your furry friend to you safely if they have a direct line of contact. Listing your most reliable phone number is essential, because in the event of an evacuation, your address won’t help them find you.

Take a moment right now to double-check your pet’s tags, and for more information on how to keep your pet safe and healthy during wildfire season, check out this post: https://www.facebook.com/beaconvet/photos/a.435265916537891/5407465179317915

07/22/2022

Did you know that your pet needs more water to maintain healthy hydration when it’s hot outside? Just like us, our pets can dehydrate easily in the heat, so it’s important to make sure you have water on hand wherever your summer adventures may take you! Lack of hydration and extended heat and sun exposure can cause heatstroke. Excessive panting, unwillingness to move, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of consciousness are all signs of heatstroke, which is extremely dangerous and can be life-threatening. Keep your pet safe and comfortable this summer by finding shady places for them to rest and recharge, and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Collapsible bowls make it easy to take water on the go, whether you’re hiking or playing at the park, watching the sunset at the beach or relaxing in the backyard. Love taking your pooch to dine al fresco? Community water bowls provided by businesses can harbor bacteria and be unsafe for multiple dogs to use, so bring along that collapsible bowl and ask your server for an extra glass of water. Your pup will thank you (and probably beg for scraps).

If your furry friend is showing any signs of heatstroke, or if they have collapsed or are unable to move, call us right away at (510) 657-6343.

07/01/2022

It seems as though we're never really quite out of the woods with wildfire season here in California, and we know how important it is to be prepared and protect our loved ones in case of emergency. When nearby fires take their toll on our air quality, our pets are often suffering the side effects of smoke inhalation before we even realize it. Here are some of the most common signs to look out for:

➡️ Abnormally watery or itchy eyes (If they are using their paws to try and scratch at their eyes, this is a telltale sign of itchy eyes.)

➡️ Coughing or excessive gagging

➡️ Loud or heavy breathing, or more open-mouthed breathing than usual (This can look like panting in dogs even when they are not trying to cool themselves down.)

➡️ Abnormal tiredness

➡️ Loss of appetite

➡️ Uncharacteristic confusion or clumsiness

If you notice any of these signs in your pet when the air quality is compromised by wildfires, especially if you too are experiencing some of the negative side effects to your own health, contact your primary care veterinarian or call us at 510-657-6343.
