Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

This is why we do what we do! We love moments like this. Kenny has been missing for 9 months. Kenny's mom had not stopped looking for him. Today Kenny came into our shelter. He was microchipped, so we were able to call his mom. His mom was so excited and came right down. He was just as excited to see them as they were him. He is now back home with his family. What a great ending to the day!

Patting a dog....sounds simple doesn't it.
There's a dog, a hand is moving in and patting a dog begins.
It just isn't that simple though.
While I love seeing the closeness and the bond clients have with their dogs....sometimes I am the bearer of news that I wish I didn't have to tell them.
I hate saying it, but I have to....
"Your dog doesn't like being touched on the head"
"Can you see them moving away from your hand when you started patting ?"
"Did you notice their mouth shut immediately and the hard side look that just happened?"

I can't not say it, and I do say it more delicately than those sentences....but it is often a shock.
Yes.... dogs can consent to being touched and they can easily remove that consent too.
To make things trickier consent can be given and immediately removed, or consent was given yesterday and not today.
I know some people may have a hang up with the word "consent" when it comes to dogs...but they absolutely have the right to say yes or no to touch.
They do this with body language.
Sometimes that body language is less than clear though and that's the tricky part.

In the graphic many people will see flat ears as a sign of anxiousness/stress but some dogs do flatten their ears when being patted on their heads when they enjoy the touch.
Some dogs will lick a patting hand from anxiety and some from affection.
Your dog will show you with their own body language.
Start to learn it because I guarantee once you do.....your bond will strengthen even more.
