2024 Shark and Ray Awareness Day
#AZASafeChallenge AZA institutions like ours work with conservation partners, like SAFE, to protect sharks & rays. And it's helping! Our collective efforts have supported legislative actions & science-based fishery management to protect sharks and rays in the wild. Overfishing is the primary threat for 100% of these species. Supporting campaigns that address excessive & unsustainable fishing practices & insisting on sustainability when we shop are simple ways to help towards better ocean health.
2024 Baba Milestone
Our oldest reticulated giraffe, Baba, turned 30 today. This is a huge milestone for our herd and for animal care here at the Zoo. Here's a glimpse of what is involved in the care of older animals.

Water Week - Cichlid Cam
Cichlids are among some of the most intelligent freshwater fish species. When we think of enrichment, we often don't think of our smaller animals also enjoying a puzzle feeder! In the wild, this species is known to graze and sift through sand for food, this enrichment helps encourage these behaviors. As you can see, they really enjoyed it! π #WaterWeek

2024 World Skunk Day
Happy #WorldSkunkDay! Here's one of our skunks enjoying some enrichment in the form of a fun puzzle feeder π adorable right? Skunks are natural foragers and enrichment items like this help encourage those behaviors of searching for food.
2024 Fisher Kit
On May 15th this little fighter arrived to Fresno Chaffee Zoo. The Southern Sierra Nevada fisher kit was found alone, hungry, and in need of help after losing its mother. National Park Service (NPS) reached out to Fresno Chaffee Zoo for assistance in providing the fisher kit with neonatal care.
Related to weasels, this California native species was listed as endangered in 2020, with an estimated population of only 300-500 in the wild. While under the guidance of Fresno Chaffee Zooβs Veterinary Care Team, NPS technicians bottle fed and gave him regular health checks. This resilient fisher kit showed exponential progress and is now back at Yosemite National Park receiving further care in preparation to be released back in the wild.
This case is one of the many examples of Fresno Chaffee Zooβs ongoing commitment to their mission to save wildlife.
