THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS A TIME OF JOY AND TOGETHERNESS, BUT FOR MANY ANIMALS IT CAN BE A CHALLENGING TIME.

Some are without homes, struggling to survive, while others in our care are awaiting their forever homes and the love they deserve. As the holiday season approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the importance of compassion, giving, and love. These are things that make our community a better place.

IRENE'S JOURNEY IS A HEARTWARMING TESTAMENT TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF LOVE, GENEROSITY, AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT.

WATCH IRENE'S STORY HERE:
https://youtu.be/AE9ZCiLoTgQ?si=emHov_yGC8QJtOh6

Found abandoned in an empty house in Georgia, matted, flea-infested, and with severely compromised vision and hearing, Irene was in desperate need of help. Her remarkable transformation from neglect to finding a forever home demonstrates the profound impact of donor contributions.

Thanks to Project Freedom Ride, Irene was transported to APS-FH, where she received urgent medical care, including critical dental surgery funded by a grant from The Grey Muzzle Organization. Ireneโ€™s resilience and unwavering spirit soon captured the hearts of her foster family, who quickly realized she wasnโ€™t just a guestโ€”she was family. Moments like cuddling with Paul for hours while he was sick created an unbreakable bond, making Pearl an irreplaceable part of their lives.

Now, Irene spends her days lounging in her favorite chair, enveloped in love from her new family, including their other petsโ€”cats Winston and Chicken, and dog Honey. Her adopters reflect on her journey, โ€œWe feel so lucky to have adopted Irene. Itโ€™s unimaginable how anyone could have abandoned her in such a neglected state. Blind in one eye, with limited vision in the other, and hearing lossโ€”how did she survive? To think this quirky, loving little dog could have been euthanized is heartbreaking. The world wouldโ€™ve lost such a unique spirit.โ€

Ireneโ€™s story is a powerful reminder of how compassion can change lives, especially for senior dogs who deserve a second chance. With the support of caring individuals, we can continue to make a differenceโ€”just like we did for Irene.

We love a good glow-up, and we have to share Edithโ€™s and Teddyโ€™s new looks on ! Edith and Teddy recently arrived at APS-FH after receiving their makeovers.

Teddy (white poodle mix) was living outside, left to fend for himself, and used as a breeder for another female dog. Edith (black/white shih tzu) entered a small city shelter in SC as a stray in rough shape. Thankfully, these sweet dogs were taken in by our transport partners and are now in our loving care.

Theyโ€™re currently living in foster homes but can meet you at the shelter after you schedule a meet-and-greet with the adoption team: 360-378-2158. The shelter is at 938 Cattle Point Road and open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Youโ€™ll find an adoption application online and a shorter version in the shelterโ€™s lobby: https://www.apsfh.com/adoption-program/canine-application/

This afternoon, a deceased cat was called into our shelter, which we picked up and are now hoping to determine if this is an owned animal. If so, weโ€™d like to notify his people โค๏ธ

This cat is a neutered male, with no microchip, who was picked up from the road in front of Heritage Farm (cross roads of Cattle Point Road and Coral Lane).

He weighs a little over 9lbs, and is black and white in color - all black tail and toe beans, all white shoulders and neck, black blotches on a majority of their back and sides, white underside, with a mixture of black and white on his face, and all black nose.

If you, or someone you know, is missing a cat similar to this description, please contact the shelter @ 360-378-2158 and ask to speak with Animal Care Team member Emily.

Pet Spotlight: Faline
Age: ~4 years. S*x: Female. Breed: Domestic Long Hair tan tabby
Origin: Orcas Island. Weight: ~10.5 lbs.

Personality: extroverted after introduction, sometimes silly, very receptive to the attention that sheโ€™s due

Energy Level: regal yet occasionally playful

Likes: body massages, conversations, hearing staff sing her name to the tune of Dolly Partonโ€™s โ€œJoleneโ€

Dislikes: pesky viruses, chicken meals, insufficient attention

I donโ€™t mean to brag, but more than one of my minions here calls me Queen Faline. They no doubt recognize my inherently divine bearing which, fortunately, coincides with my need for a one-cat indoor-only home.

You see, I tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), having caught the virus while living outside in one of my previous eras. This means I need to be the only lion in the house.

That medical stuff aside, one of my minions โ€” animal care team member Flora Miles โ€” wants you to know that Iโ€™m โ€œa fluffy girl full of love. She makes the funniest faces when enjoying head scritches!โ€

If you want to try to induce a funny face, you can visit my current lodging: APS-FH, 938 Cattle Point Road. The staff can lead you to me between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

๐ŸŽŠ INCOMING FURRY FRIENDS! ๐ŸŽŠ
Get ready for new residents at the shelter this weekend! Between Project Freedom Ride and ARFS, 10+ dogs and cats are joining the APS-FH crew.

Begun by a boy named Roman, Project Freedom Ride has found new homes for dogs in Texas and Georgia since 2016. Its first transport took 31 dogs to Washington state.
ARFS (GC) โ€” Animal Rescue Friends Society of Grant County โ€” began helping animals in 2019 and is located in central Washington state.
Working with both of these wonderful organizations have allowed us to transport some loving animals into our care and into your hearts!

Our new residents will be ready for visitors on Tuesday at 11amThe shelter is open 11am-4pm Tuesday-Sunday. The catsโ€™ room are available during shelter hours, and the dogs are available for meet-and-greet appointments at: 360-378-2158.

The APS-FH community lost long-time shelter residents Aya and Benna because of medical conditions that severely reduced their quality of life. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize them. During their last days, we surrounded Aya and Benna with affection as their pain decreased and they exited this world. They will be so dearly missed.
