๐Ÿพ This year, we hoped to raise $10,000 through the San Juan Island Community Foundationโ€™s County Fair Giving Campaign - SJI Cares, to support our mission of "Providing compassionate care and brighter futures for homeless animals."

This year, our focus was to raise money to provide healthy nourishment and enrichment care (food, beds, blankets, scratching posts, treats, chews and toys, etc.) to our shelter animals this coming year.๐Ÿฆด๐Ÿงธ

Because of your generous support, we are so excited to announce that we have gone well past that goal through this yearโ€™s campaign. As of the close of the campaign, we have raised $12,650! ๐ŸŽ‰

Over the last several days, throughout the fair, we have enjoyed sharing a little bit of what we do โ€œbehind the scenesโ€ and the many ways your donations help to support APS-FH. We hope you enjoyed it too.

Weโ€™d also like to thank the SJICF for sponsoring the SJI-Cares campaign again this year. It is a great way to involve the community and at the same time support our many wonderful non-profit organizations.

We live in a very special place.
APS-FH is grateful to be a part of it. ๐Ÿ˜ป

Did we mention our furry friends love toys?

We depend a great deal on having toys for both cats and dogs. Obviously, toys are tons of fun and they offer stimulation and enrichment for the pets in our care.

Puppies and kittens especially like to have a variety of toys, plus we like to switch them out daily to offer different types of stimulation. Having a variety of toys in our arsenal is crucial so we can cater to the individual animalโ€™s preference and needs.

Some of the varieties we like to have on hand are plush toys of varying sizes with squeaks and crinkles, durable tough toys for the destructive chewers, treat dispensing toys, roller balls, flirt poles and cat wands, balls of any size, laser toys (cats only), catnip plushies, etc.

Thanks to you, so far we have raised over $12,000!

We are so grateful to our community - we have reached our SJICF's County Fair's Giving Campaign goal!

BUT, there is still more do to. Our actual food and enrichment budget totals almost $17,000 annually. With your help, we will be able to get closer to funding our food and enrichment budget for an entire year!

TODAY is the final day of the Community Foundation's Giving Campaign. It runs through midnight, tonight!

Earlier today, we asked, "How many pounds of dog food APS-FH goes through each year to feed our homeless puppies and dogs?

It takes 5,284 pounds of dog food each year to feed our puppies and adult dogs within the shelter!

That's a lot of doggie dinners! Our budget for just dog food is about $7,000 - each bag of dog food costs $52.99 and weighs 40 lbs.!

As we mentioned earlier, we are again asking for your help to provide for our shelter animals. Food, along with beds, treats and toys needed for enrichment, are expensive. Do you know how many pounds of dog food APS-FH goes through each year to feed our homeless puppies and dogs?

Please take a guess...and we'll post it here later today!

Hint: It is a lot! Our four-legged friends have healthy appetites. They also have special needs while being temporarily housed in kennels, waiting for their โ€œforeverโ€ home.

Take for instance Bully sticks!

Chewing is a natural and necessary behavior for the health and well-being of dogs. Dogs that spend time in kennels are under a greater amount of stress. One of the ways to help alleviate that stress is through mental exercise such as chewing, food puzzles, and rewarding good behaviors. At the shelter, we use several different forms of enrichment items, including Bully sticks and Kongs.

Bully sticks are expensive, but they are one of the safest and easiest chew items to digest on the market. And the dogs LOVE them! We use over 500 Bully sticks a year, at a cost of $2.00 per stick. That equals $1,000 per year, just for Bully sticks alone!

As we mentioned earlier, we are again asking for your help to provide for our shelter animals. Food, along with beds, treats and toys needed for enrichment, are expensive.

Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 through the San Juan Island Community Foundation's County Fair giving Program. Our actual food and enrichment care budget totals almost $17,000 annually.

Cats NEED to scratch. In the shelter, it is a requirement that every cat have access to a scratching post. We like to encourage the cats in our care to use scratching posts not only for their health and natural urges, but to guide them in using something appropriate for this activity. Cat posts are made to be torn up and cannot be sanitized; therefore, once they are soiled, they cannot be reused. The shelter goes through a lot of scratchers throughout the year!

With your help, we will be able to meet our goal!

-COURTESY POST-

๐ŸพMorph & Nyxie are seeking a temporary foster home! ๐Ÿก

From their guardians:
โ€œHello! My boyfriend and I are excited to be moving back to the island on September 1st. We will be staying at the hostel for about two months, and weโ€™re hoping to find someone to foster our two beloved cats during that time.

We can provide everything they need-food, litter, litter boxes. Theyโ€™re both indoor cats, but if you have a Catio, they do enjoy spending time outside.

Morph, our brown tabby boy, is a three-legged sweetheart whoโ€™s full of love and plays fetch on his good days. He gets along with everyone, including dogs and other cats. Then thereโ€™s Nyxie, our beautiful girl. She just turned one and is quite the little huntress- sheโ€™s also our expert fly catcher! While she might be a bit shy around new things, she usually just hunkers down and waits for things to calm down.

Itโ€™s important to us that they stay together. Weโ€™d love to visit them as often as we can, so weโ€™re looking for someone who can keep them close by. โ€œ

If you would like to know more about these cats, please contact Chelsea or Jerron at 405-589-9059.

*These cats are not at the shelter. APS-FH offers Courtesy Posting as a way for pets to stay in their current homes while looking for their new home or a temporary foster home. APS-FH has not met, evaluated, or interacted with these cats and cannot make any guarantees about their health or temperament. Placement is at the discretion of the pets current guardian. *

We are so excited! We have again been chosen, along with 29 other fantastic San Juan County non-profits, to participate in this year's San Juan Island Community Foundation's County Fair fundraising campaign - SJI Cares. It begins Thursday, August 15th and runs through Sunday, August 18th.

This year we hope to raise money to provide healthy nourishment and enrichment to support our four-legged friends.

We also hope to have some fun and provide our community with some interesting and helpful information.

Another addition of Observations from a New Employee on the Animal Care Team:

1. Some collective nouns for kittens are "litter" and "clowder," but a more accurate name is "chaos" โ€” a chaos of kittens ๐Ÿ˜ธ

2. Kittens are not solid objects. They are liquids, capable of unexpectedly and rapidly flowing into the unlikeliest spaces ๐Ÿซ

3. If you think that kittens are solids, then you might think that hard-wire foldable pet gates can contain them. You are mistaken ๐Ÿ˜ผ Liquid chaos can flow up and climb the hard wire!

4. A better way to contain liquid chaos is to use an enclosed carrier with a door. Chaos can become VERY vocal in its displeasure but will not escape a carrier ๐ŸŒฌ

5. The release of chaos into a clean, fresh space is cause for great joy! But run away quickly before being lured into its vortex ๐ŸŒช ๐Ÿ˜ฝ

We have an abundance of chaos currently at the shelter ready to be adopted and even more on the way! If you are interested in adopting please come by the shelter Tuesday-Sunday 11am-4pm!

A huge shoutout to Tom with Community Water Taxi for his invaluable assistance in transporting a dog and several cats to the Orcas Animal Protection Society. This endeavor truly takes a village, and we couldnโ€™t have accomplished todayโ€™s mission without Tomโ€™s support. Letโ€™s celebrate the spirit of community and the incredible people who make a difference! Thank you, Tom!

Yesterday in our social post entitled โ€œPaws & Play Post #1 - The Event Itselfโ€, we celebrated the success of our recent Paws & Play event by highlighting all the fun, different aspects of that day, and all the collaboration that made it happen! For todayโ€™s Part #2, weโ€™re thrilled to share the adoptions that came from it, so without further adoโ€ฆ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ“šPaws & Play Post #2 - Event Related Adoptions! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’™When local childrenโ€™s book author, Tara Mesalik MacMahon, first came to us at APS-FH with the idea for an event, doing something that had the best chance of getting as many shelter pets adopted out as possible was her absolute primary focus; she was adamant that although her and her brotherโ€™s book would be a focus of the event, that the animal adoption success was their most important goal. With themes of pet adoption in their book, โ€œCloset of Dreamsโ€, and with beloved pets of their own, Tara and Mark wanted this event to ultimately help in raising awareness for shelter animals in need.

We were so appreciative of their enthusiasm for our adoption mission, and with our minds combined, we came up with plans for an event that could welcome our community into the shelter space and allow them to interact with some of our adoptable animals, as well as learn about the ones who werenโ€™t viewable during the event, but who are also available for adoption. To accomplish this mission, our event included: a puppy social aspect where guests could meet the puppies we currently had available named โ€œThe Beatles Litterโ€; the opportunity to visit our adoptable cats, including felines of all ages, even litters of kittens; an event-specific coupon which could be picked up at our APS-FH table and was for 50% off any adoption, anytime in the future; multiple binders with up to date photos, descriptions, and information on all the animals who are currently in care and available for adoption; many staff and volunteers available to answer any and all questions, as well as being able to provide the appropriate application for any animal guests were interested in adopting! Although the nature of the never-expiring coupon makes it possible that still more happiness will come from this event, weโ€™re thrilled to share that four adoptions in the last month have directly come from the event, and that all the puppies available for adoption during our event have since gone home to new, amazing, loving families!

We couldnโ€™t be happier with the fact that this event was not only such a fun opportunity for collaboration amongst islanders, but that it also yielded such great adoption outcomes! ๐Ÿ’™

๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ‘๐ŸปThank you so much to all the adopters included in this roundup! We so appreciate you and your willingness to save a life by adopting a shelter pet! Your new pets are lucky to be so well cared for and loved by you! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ž

Today marks one month since our Paws & Play Community Event and if weโ€™re being honest, weโ€™re still reeling from just how special it truly was! Maybe thatโ€™s because the magic of it is still lingering for us here at APS-FH, and weโ€™re excited to share some of that with all of you in TWO POSTS; one will feature highlights of the event itself (this one) + one will feature the adoption stories tied into this event (posted tomorrow)! ๐Ÿ’– So, without further adoโ€ฆ

๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ“šPaws & Play Post #1 - The Event Itself! ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿ’œPaws & Play was a family-friendly, fun for all ages event hosted by APS-FH, and in partnership with childrenโ€™s book authors & illustrator, Griffin Bay Bookstore, San Juan Island Library, and a few of our local animal focused kidโ€™s groups! The event introduced and celebrated โ€œCloset of Dreamsโ€, a childrenโ€™s book written by local author Tara Mesalik MacMahon, and her brother & co-author Mark Ukra, and illustrated by local artist, Donna Dyer โ€” all who could be found in person at the Griffin Bay Bookstore table; chatting with those in attendance, meeting readers of their book, signing copies of said book, and smiling for photos all throughout the event!
In addition to visiting the โ€œCloset of Dreamsโ€ & Griffin Bay Bookstore table, community members attending Paws & Play could alsoโ€ฆ

- visit the San Juan Island Library table for coloring activities, and to check out an array of pet, adoption, and animal books to peruse while learning about your local library!

- stop in for free popcorn and lemonade, and for sale baked goods at the refreshment station. This table was run by Georgiaโ€™s Animal Book Club, and all sales were kindly donated from them to our animal shelter!

- visit the 4H Dog Kidโ€™s Club table for fun coloring activities, and to learn more about: how to be involved in your local 4H; what the 4H Dog Kiddos are currently working on; details on the Clubโ€™s upcoming shows at the SJC Fair, and kid-friendly information about dog behavior!

- visit APS-FHโ€™s outreach table to learn more about the animals we currently have available for adoption, ways to be involved with our shelter, the services we provide!

- meet โ€œThe Beatles Litterโ€ (5 puppies) who were in the shelterโ€™s lobby during the event, and were available for adoption (more on them in post #2 tomorrow)!

- meet all of the kittens and cats who were in our Community Cat Space, and currently available for adoption!

- receive a guided shelter tour!

- if youโ€™re a kid, or just a super-fun adult, you couldโ€™ve also had your face painted, gone for a good jump around in the bouncy house, and left with some on-theme & free goodies! ๐Ÿ’œ

๐ŸฅนSwipe through the photos here to see some snippets from the event! We had such a blast coming together with all of you to celebrate animals (especially those currently available for adoption @ your local animal shelter), books, imagination, and following your dreams!๐Ÿ˜

๐Ÿ’ž๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป THANK YOU SO MUCH to all who attended, supported, volunteered and/or worked at this collaborative, and celebratory event! With all of the elements of this event there were many successes, none of which we could have done without all of you! Weโ€™ve said it once, and weโ€™ll keep saying it: an event like this simply can not happen without the immense effort, enthusiasm, and input of all those who work to make it happen, and all those who attend!
Paws & Play was made possible and successful by: the multiple organizations and groups who were a part of the event, the 40+ volunteers and staff who helped with the event and/or helped to keep the shelter (animal care included) running as usual, and the ~120 community members who attended, making the day as fun and as special as we had hoped it would be! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ’ž

Thank you The Grey Muzzle Organization for funding Animal Protection Society of Friday Harborโ€™s grant for a second year so that we can help more precious senior dogs, like Rhea. We are eternally thankful ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ˜Œ ๐Ÿพ

After living in a basement for a year surviving on scraps, she never gave up her sweet smile. ๐Ÿฅน

At 7 years old, Rhea, a resilient shepherd mix, was rescued from a basement in Texas where she survived on scraps for over a year. Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor took her in but during her senior wellness checkup, Rhea tested positive for tapeworms and showed signs of malnutrition and chronic anemia.

Thanks to a Grey Muzzle, grant, APS-FH provided Rhea with the crucial medical and dental care she needed. With this support, Rhea was on her way to better health and comfort and most importantly, ready to be adopted! ๐Ÿซถ

The Animal Protection Society - Friday Harbor (APS-FH) is pleased to announce Nikki Ruggiero and The Koehne Family as Volunteers of the Month for July 2024.

Summer of love? More like summer of kittens! Kitten season at the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor (APS-FH) has been absolutely wild, and we would not be getting through it without the help of our dedicated volunteers. This month, we are thrilled to shine the spotlight on Nikki and The Koehne family for their unwavering dedication and incredible contributions.

Nikki Ruggiero

Every Tuesday, APS-FH facilitates a spay and neuter clinic that serves our community and the feral cats of San Juan Island. This time of year, the clinic is overrun with what feels like an endless stream of kittens that need to be spayed or neutered. So far, our biggest clinic day has seen 16 spay/neuter surgeries in just one day! Between trapping and surgeries, we have seen far more kittens born on the island this season than in recent years. Our average spay and neuter count for kittens and in-heat females is about 10 cats a month. This year, we fixed 19 cats in May, 29 in June, and so far in July, we have done 5 with an additional 6 scheduled โ€“ and weโ€™re sure more are on their way!

With such a busy clinic, we are beyond grateful for our clinic volunteer, Nikki! Nikki is here every Tuesday, providing invaluable support and ensuring everything runs smoothly. Her unique blend of experience as a nurse and a passionate wildlife rescuer makes her an indispensable member of our clinic team.

Nikkiโ€™s journey with animals started early. Growing up with a traveling magician father, she was exposed to a variety of animals, including bunnies, donkeys, and doves, all of whom were well cared for as a part of the act. This unique upbringing fostered a deep love for animals in Nikki. Her passion for animal rescue truly sparked when she found a crow with a broken leg, igniting her dedication to helping wildlife.

While Nikki loves all animals, she identifies as a โ€œbird personโ€. At home, she has an African Grey Parrot, a Double Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot, and a rowdy white shepherd, all of whom she adores.

Nikki, your tireless efforts and compassionate heart make a world of difference to APS-FH and the animals we care for. Thank you for your dedication and for being such an integral part of our team. We are incredibly grateful for everything you do!

The Koehne Family

Weโ€™d also like to give a huge thank you to the Koehne family - Renee, Brittany, and Virgil โ€“ for their unwavering dedication to fostering as many kittens as they can. Their commitment and compassion have been invaluable to APS-FH.

The Koehne familyโ€™s journey in fostering cats began over 11 years ago while they were living in California. During their time there, they fostered over 700 kittens! Their incredible journey didnโ€™t stop at fostering; Renee and Brittany also took on the crucial task of trapping feral cats, ensuring they were spayed or neutered before being released back into the community. This initiative started when they discovered over 100 cats living on the grounds of a middle school in their California neighborhood.

Since joining APS-FH, the Koehne family has continued their remarkable efforts. At the height of their fostering journey with us, they had as many as 50 foster kittens at once. Currently, the Koehne household is bustling with 4 foster kittens, one barn cat, 7 pet cats, and 2 dogs.

Brittany and Virgil play an essential role in socializing and playing with the foster kittens. Their efforts extend to introducing the kittens to their dogs, helping them become accustomed to other animals, which greatly aids in their social development.

Renee has noted the significant increase in kittens this year, echoing the challenges faced by many in the animal rescue community. Despite the demanding nature of this volunteer work, Renee finds it deeply rewarding. She shares, โ€œit is so rewarding to see them come full circle. To watch them progress and become healthy and then go to a good home.โ€

The dedication and love shown by the Koehne family have made a profound impact on our community and the lives of countless kittens. Renee, Brittany, and Virgil, your tireless efforts and heartfelt commitment are truly inspiring! Thank you for all that you do for APS-FH and the animals in our care!

We love saving lives in collaboration with Project Freedom Ride. This happily home story is VERY personal because sweet Pearl (formerly Irene) found her forever home with our Executive Director Cristin Felso her husband Paul, dog Honey, and two cats Chicken and Winston. We loved helping Pearl and Roman reunite and seeing the beautiful connection that obviously still exists between them.

When we tell you our adoptions are personal we mean it. We arenโ€™t just adopting you a dog .. weโ€™re welcoming you into the PFR Family. Roman was surprised with a Pearl (formerly known as Irene) reunion earlier this week. It was so kind of her new parents to take time to meet up with Roman. He had such a special connection with Pearl โ€ฆ we all did. It did his heart good to see she is absolutely spoiled rotten and living he best life!

Observations* from a new employee on the Animal Care Team:

1. Kittens move verrry quickly. Theyโ€™re almost freakishly fast! ๐Ÿ

2. Itโ€™s best to always shuffle your feet while cleaning a kitten room. You think the floor is clear before putting down your foot, but then itโ€™s not. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

3. Anything can be a kitten toy, including a piece of pine kitty litter or your shoe.

4. You might become a kittenโ€™s climbing tower, and denim might be as grippy as sisal.

5. Like Frenchie said in TV show โ€œOur Flag Means Death,โ€ kittens have knives in their feet. ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

6. Itโ€™s possible to sweep a floor thoroughly while a kitten rides on your bent-over back. ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

7. A kitten might see your lower neck as an optimal suckling option. ๐Ÿผ
