National Black Dog Day
🐾🖤This October 1st, we celebrate National Black Dog Day, and there's no better way to honor this special occasion than by shining a spotlight on our sweet girl, Benna! With her soulful eyes and gentle spirit, Benna has captured the hearts of everyone at APS-FH since she first arrived in May 2023. As our beloved lobby dog, Benna is a true ambassador of love and joy, ready to greet every visitor with warmth and affection. She may have been waiting for her forever home for a while, but her spirit remains unbroken, and her capacity to love is boundless.🥰
✨If you're looking to add a loving companion to your life, come meet Benna! She’s eager to find a family who will appreciate her unique charm and unwavering loyalty. Visit us at the shelter Tuesday through Sunday 11am-4pm to connect with this incredible girl. Let’s make this National Black Dog Day a turning point for Benna and help her find the loving home she deserves! 🖤✨

Do you know how many pounds of dog food APS-FH goes through each year to feed our homeless puppies and dogs?
Please take a guess...and we'll post it here later today!
Hint: It is a lot! Our four-legged friends have healthy appetites. They also have special needs while being temporarily housed in kennels, waiting for their “forever” home.
Take for instance Bully sticks!
Chewing is a natural and necessary behavior for the health and well-being of dogs. Dogs that spend time in kennels are under a greater amount of stress. One of the ways to help alleviate that stress is through mental exercise such as chewing, food puzzles, and rewarding good behaviors. At the shelter, we use several different forms of enrichment items, including Bully sticks and Kongs.
Bully sticks are expensive, but they are one of the safest and easiest chew items to digest on the market. And the dogs LOVE them! We use over 500 Bully sticks a year, at a cost of $2.00 per stick. That equals $1,000 per year, just for Bully sticks alone!
As we mentioned earlier, we are again asking for your help to provide for our shelter animals. Food, along with beds, treats and toys needed for enrichment, are expensive.
Our goal this year is to raise $10,000 through the San Juan Island Community Foundation's County Fair giving Program. Our actual food and enrichment care budget totals almost $17,000 annually.

💦 Take a hot summer tip from Holli girl, and go take a dip to cool off! 💦
🌊 Although all our shelter pups get access to the kiddie pool, no one loves it quite like Holli! As soon as she’s let into the big yard, she runs right to it for a big ol’ splash. Holli’s love for water doesn’t stop at pools, but we’ve seen on field trips with her that the ocean is just as fun! Here is Holli at the beach! 🌊
💙 Are you looking for a water enthusiast to come into your life and make things cooler & better than ever? Then look no further than Holli! 💙
Catsicles!
🐾At APSFH, we understand the importance of keeping our furry friends cool during the hot summer months. That's why we have introduced a new way for our cats to beat the heat - catsicles! These fun and refreshing treats are not only easy to make at home, but also provide long-lasting enrichment for your feline companions.
To make these cool treats, simply insert a popsicle stick into a squeezable cat treat tube and pop it in the freezer. Once frozen, your cat will have a delicious and fun way to stay cool and entertained. And the best part? No mess!
Pictured in the video below are Panther and Canuck. They are currently available for adoption! If you are interested in any of our kittens, please stop by the shelter for a visit. 🐱
