Pet Spotlight: Rhea!
Age: ~7 years S*x: Female Breed: German Shepherd mix
Origin: Lubbock, Texas Weight: ~67 lbs
Personality: sociable with dogs, cats and children; eager to train; affectionate with caregivers; a ray of sunshine!
Energy Level: easy-going, medium energy
Likes: ALL the treats, belly scritches, “sniffari” safaris
Dislikes: dogs who might take my treats, people who don’t offer enough treats, the lack of sufficient treats in my life.

Midlife can challenge the best of us, no? I’m prone to comfort eating if given the chance. And FYI: I don’t want to share food with canine companions.
UPDATE: The medical staff want you to know I have an underlying autoimmune condition that could be triggered by stressful medical procedures but is not a daily concern or something that dampens my spirits in the least!
When I came to Friday Harbor, the staff treated me for some medical issues and now give me a clean bill of health. They've praised my upbeat attitude during treatment — go, me!
With my future crew, I totally want to share outdoor adventures! We will have a fantastic time on walks where I can indulge my nosework hobby.
Cozy time appeals to me, too. With folks who really get me, I might put my paw on your shoulder, stare at you with love in my eyes and share soft kisses on your cheek. And if you decide to give me tummy rubs but stop before I’m ready, I’ll put your hand back on my belly to let you know we’re not done yet.
Want to meet me? Please fill out this adoption application!

ADOPTED ❤️

These sweeeet kittens are looking for their new best friend! Both came in as strays from different locations on the island, but they quickly became inseparable and are now looking for their fur-ever homes together! Make eye contact with either of them and they are purring up a storm! They love to play with toys and have plenty of rambunctious kitten energy. They need a patient and caring home that’s willing to give them lots of love.

Lucky Black Cat!
Have you visited the cats and dogs at the animal shelter lately? A recent arrival adopted the role of greeter, supplementing lobby dog Benna’s job of ensuring that everyone enjoys a warm welcome.
The shelter’s entry for the 2024 Scarecrow Contest now greets everyone at the front doors of The Luca Center, the shelter’s reception area. Made by shelter volunteer Patty Francisco, the fun scarecrow celebrates the gorgeous and good-natured black cats that temporarily live in the shelter before their adoptions into forever homes. Thank you, Patty, for sharing your time and creativity to add this festive sculpture to the town’s annual competition!
Sponsored by San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce and Friends of the San Juan Island Library, the free-to-enter scarecrow contest encourages neighborhoods and businesses in the Town of Friday Harbor to display creative scarecrows outside or in front windows and to register their scarecrows for inclusion on a map. This year’s contest includes 15 scarecrows!
Everyone can visit and vote on the scarecrows now. Voting is open and lasts until Monday, Oct. 28. The scarecrow map and the voting form are at https://sanjuanisland.org/scarecrow-contest, and they can be downloaded as PDF documents. Participants can choose first, second and third places on their voting forms. Make sure to visit Lucky Black Cat ( #9 on the scarecrow map) and then vote for Patty’s creation!

Hello, San Juan County. Care to hear delightful news? I’m accepting inquiries from discerning individuals who appreciate my desire for a relaxing ambiance. Ideally, we’ll spend quality time on a cozy sofa where I can sit next to my companion or climb onto their lap while we watch my favorite actresses: Dame Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench.

Can you tell that I’m an old soul in a young body? I prefer to avoid anything uncouth or undignified. Friends enjoy my sweet, reserved personality, and sometimes they succeed at making me laugh exuberantly.

If you or a neighbor, friend, relative or coworker share these sentiments, please visit my current lodging (APS-FH, 938 Cattle Point Road) so we can make our acquaintance without delay! The staff can lead you to me between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.

Please join us in celebrating Richard Bell, honored as Volunteer of the Month for September 2024 by Animal Protection Society - Friday Harbor!

Bell has gained a reputation as a sweet and consistent volunteer among the animal shelter’s staff members. “Richard has been a solid and dependable dog walker for years now,” says Brittney Ducote, an animal care team member. “He’s very respectful of the dogs’ wishes.

“If a dog doesn’t want to walk or play, he’s happy just hanging out and keeping them company,” Ducote says. “He never pushes them beyond their comfort level and always has something positive to say about their personalities.”
One of the shelter’s current dogs, Rhea, stands out as one of Bell’s favorite walking companions. “She’s friendly, even-tempered and food-motivated, so she can be trained easily. I’m surprised she hasn’t been adopted.”

After losing a pet, the life-long dog owner hesitated to adopt another dog and thought that volunteering at the shelter would be a worthwhile way to “get his dog fixes.”

One of Bell’s favorite moments since then is getting to know Libby, a current resident. “When I first met Libby, signs said ‘No men.’ She wasn’t open to being walked by a man. I eventually gained her trust. Seeing Libby overcome her fear of men is rewarding.”
Bell says it’s also rewarding to see nervous dogs brighten up after adjusting to their temporary home. “And then seeing them enrich somebody’s life — it’s all good.”

In tough situations, Richard is calm, cool and collected, says Cayla Knisley, an animal care team member. “He makes sure he does all he can to keep the animals’ safety the priority. That is a great volunteer and an even better human.”

Richard, thank you so much for generously sharing your time, experience and empathy with the APS dogs. We appreciate you immensely!
