McDuff was a particularly heartbreaking Westie we rescued this year. He was surrendered because he would unexpectedly corner and show aggression to his owner for no discernable reason. His former owner had tried everything to discourage this behavior, but she was at her wit’s end. WRNT decided to take this little guy in to give him a chance at a furever home in the hopes we could determine if this was an issue of pain or ill health or a home situation that caused him to be so unhappy.
He was thoroughly vetted and found to be healthy, so he was placed in a loving foster home to be evaluated.
One day, McDuff acted in the same manner to his foster parents and was removed from their home. What to do next?
Bring in Teresa, an animal rescue trainer who took McDuff in and worked with him for several weeks. However, McDuff also was aggressive with Teresa, and together we determined that he was unadoptable to the public. Again, we were faced with what to do with McDuff. In the shelter system, there’s only one answer. But in rescue…
Teresa had fallen in love and, because of her training expertise, now knew what to do. She’d figured out that McDuff has poor eyesight and will react without thinking when he is surprised or cornered unexpectedly. She adopted him and, to this day, works with McDuff to make him happy and comfortable. McDuff is living out his days in splendor at Teresa’s farm.
It took several thousand dollars to save little McDuff, but we did it with no guarantee that he would ever be adoptable and bring in a minimal adoption fee. Some dogs are just worth it.
Please consider giving this North Texas Giving Day to all the dogs out there who are square pegs in a round hole and don’t fit the “Perfect Dog” mold. McDuff didn’t, but he found his home anyway.
