It is not recommended to leave a dog outside in the rain for long periods of time, especially in cold or heavy rain. However, a short period of time in the rain is usually fine for healthy dogs.
Risks of leaving a dog outside in the rain
Respiratory infections: Prolonged exposure to wet and cold weather can cause inflammation in the respiratory tract, making dogs more susceptible to pneumonia.
Skin infections: Rain can cause skin infections like dermatitis, pyoderma, ringworm, or hot spots.
Ear infections: Rain can cause ear infections like otitis externa or otitis media.
Eye infections: Rain can cause eye infections like conjunctivitis or keratitis.
What to do if your dog gets wet
Dry your dog with a towel as soon as you come inside.
Provide a warm, dry area for your dog to stay in.
Consider training your dog to wear a raincoat.
How to help your dog get used to wet paws
Feed your dog treats or meals on wet grass.
Provide a covered area in your garden or on your balcony for your dog to go to the bathroom.
Purchase rain boots, a rain jacket, or a large umbrella.

ADA Requirements: Service Animals

According to the ADA, a service animal is a dog that has received training to perform tasks for individuals with disabilities.

If a dog’s presence solely provides comfort, it does not meet the ADA’s definition of a service animal. On the other hand, if the dog is trained to perform tasks related to a person’s disability, it qualifies as a service animal. For instance, a dog trained to detect anxiety attacks and take actions to mitigate or avoid them is considered a service animal.

Examples of Service Animal Tasks

Wheelchair users may have dogs trained to retrieve objects.

Individuals with depression may have dogs trained to remind them to take medication.

Those with PTSD may have dogs trained to alert them to impending panic attacks.

People with epilepsy may have dogs trained to detect seizures and ensure their safety during the seizure. These examples illustrate various situations where service dogs are necessary.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's essential to consider your pets' safety and well-being while celebrating. Here are some practical tips to keep in mind:

Here are some Valentine's Day do's and don'ts for pets:
Don't give your pet toxic flowers
Some flowers, like lilies, tulips, and ranunculus, are toxic to pets and can cause serious illness or death.
Don't give your pet roses
While roses are not toxic, their thorns can injure your pet's mouth and paws.
Do give your pet pet-friendly flowers
Gerbera daisies, petunias, sunflowers, moth orchids, and African violets are all safe for pets.
Do check if a plant is pet-friendly
You can use the ASPCA Plant Guide or Plant Snap to check if a plant is safe for pets.
Do give your pet a safe gift
A new collar, treats, or toys can be great gifts for your pet.
Do donate to an animal shelter
If your pet already has lots of toys and treats, you can donate to an animal shelter or rescue group in your pet's name.
Do show your pet extra love and affection
You can tell your pet you love them, give them treats, play with them, or exercise with them.
