Both April/May ‘24 and June/July ‘24 posted together.

Yesterday was probably one of the best dissections we’ve had. Everyone had fabulous questions and observations. We were able to change the way we look at the hoof and have an easier process for looking ahead. Knowing how you’re manipulating your soft tissue, exactly how much of the foot is soft tissue, and being able to visualize about where your structures sit with in the capsule goes such a long way!

June/July Class as 2 weeks left and I would love to know how their approach has changed now after seeing and feeling every thing.

Probably the most impactful piece of information from this cadaver was bone loss, a crack or void will always means something more, and being able to see how a lamellar wedge forms behind the crack and fills in the void at the coffin bone behind it.

Of course my time here wouldn’t have been complete with a Beginner Farrier Business Class. Farrier school is definitely the easier part. Running a business can bury you faster than an ill tempered horse can.

If you’re a student in either class please send me some of your photos and videos 2564871352

Another anatomy class in the books for this Spring class. We took some time to discuss how to properly set up your business after school from business formation to taxes. Tips to not let your business run you, and how to keep yourself safe.

A quick quiz puzzle on where all the bones fit and what they are, then on to wet lab.

The cadaver we had presented with some distal decent so it was a good show of where the capsule had migrated in relation to P3. With the distal decent, we had a great representation of ischemia to tissues at areas of the coronary cushion and wall areas.

With the ischemia we were able to discuss and identify hoof distortion scenarios and troubleshoot the best ways to have and restore good blood flow.

Spring class 2024, I wish you all the best. Complete with all the horses you need in your lives to be successful.

These cadaver classes are made possible by owners who are gracious enough to donate their horses limbs for science and education. Without our donors, these educational opportunities wouldn’t be possible.

If you are an owner interested in donating or would like more information on the process, please reach out and I’ll walk you through it.

Hoof care providers- if you need help in navigating how to ask your owners about limb donations for education, reach out as well for support in building that relationship.

Summer Class 2023 Distal Limb Dissection

Yesterday, the Summer 2023 class hopefully gained some confidence in understanding the influence they have on internal structures of the hoof and limb.

They played around with assembling bone sets in proper order and practicing bone identification to help on their exit exam while we discussed how to set your business up for long term success.

After classroom time, we were able to take a deep dive into a pathological cadaver donation that shed light on outer white line defects that never close no matter what you treat with, see exactly how the internal structures were compensating, with the ability to actually touch and compare healthy laminar tissue with laminar wedge tissue filling in bone loss around P3.

A great part of this cadaver foot was the identifying external components of deciding whether or not you have a healthy capsule with ample sole depth or are you dealing with rotation. We were able to discuss and palpate coronary band changes to watch for in deciding if you have greater problems at hand.

We even found unexpected calcification of the DDFT with a lesion on the Navicular bone. It’s always an adventure of what you may find and learn from when doing these dissections.

Thanks again for having me out. It’s always a pleasure to nerd out with students and share a little bit of what I’ve learned over all these years. The opportunity to give back to the school I graduated from is a humbling and heart warming experience every time.

Photos from today, April class. Thanks to the students for their help and excitement today.

We had a great case study with radiographs from a late stage Cushings horse with a great deal of bone loss of P3 with a bonus that included a deep abscess tract. We were also able to see some slipped/displaced corium from distal decent. It was definitely cool being able to relate and chase a tract from the outside to the inside of the capsule. It was a great perspective for everyone as they move forward in their careers.

Wishing you all much success!

As always, thank you so much to our owners who donate their horses limbs and hooves. Without you this type of hands on learning would not be possible. It’s an absolute honor to have your beloved horses make such a difference for our industry. Your horse’s donation influences 1000s of other horse’s lives for years to come by having Hoof Care Providers learn from them.

Looking forward to the next class!

It’s been a pleasure and an honor to return home in a sense to share my love for anatomy and how it relates to our jobs as Hoof Care Providers. Thanks so much to Tom and Lane for the opportunity to provide such an important topic to students.

To the students, thank you all for the questions and enthusiasm.

I’m behind on posting pictures so I’ll post March class first and then today’s next to keep them separate. I don’t have names for everyone so be sure to tag yourself or share some of your favorite photos! Be sure to share some over at Elevated Equine Solutions to!

Thanks!
