Important information for all horse owners. This is especially important in climates like ours where the temperature can fluctuate from very low temps to high temps in a single day.

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO SPOT COLIC IN HORSES?

Colic is not a disease; it is merely a symptom of disease. Specifically, colic indicates a painful problem in the horse's abdomen (belly), which can be caused by a number of different conditions. Less than 10% of all colic cases are severe enough to require surgery or cause the death of the horse; nevertheless, every case of colic should be taken seriously because it can be difficult to tell the mild ones from the potentially serious ones in the early stages.

Horses show signs of abdominal pain in a wide variety of ways, and usually a horse shows only a few of the signs during an episode of colic. The rule of thumb is—the more obvious the signs of pain, the more serious the problem.

If you suspect the horse is suffering from colic, we suggest that you:
• Alert your veterinarian immediately.
• Remove all hay and grain from the horse's surroundings.
• Don't medicate without your veterinarian's approval, as pain medications can mask clinical signs;
• Walk the horse around if it's continually rolling or in danger of hurting itself—but do not tire the horse with relentless walking and don't approach the animal if it's not safe.
• Keep the horse under close observation until the signs of colic resolve or the veterinarian arrives.

The key to increasing the chances of a good outcome is to identify the problem early and get your veterinarian involved from the start. Consult your horse doctor for more information and be sure to ask them how they can be reached if your horse colics after hours!

We're back with another toxcity!

❌ Number 3: Ethylene Glycol Toxicosis

➡️ Why? The toxic property is oxalic acid. This binds to calcium in the body and results in the formation of crystals in the proximal renal tubules (part of the kidneys' filtration system).

➡️ How? The formation of calcium in the renal tubules decreases the kidneys' ability to filter. This ultimately leads to acute kidney failure. Early clinical signs include vomiting, increase drinking and urinating, depression, and ataxia. Later signs include painful kidneys, kidney failure, loss of production of urine, seizures, and death.

➡️ When? Ethylene glycol toxicosis most commonly occurs in cooler climates. This is because it is found in antifreeze. Since 2012, manufacturers have began adding bittering agents to the products to decrease palatability.

➡️ What? Bring you pet in as soon as you suspect any ingestion of antifreeze, no matter how much or how little.

Happy Hump Day!

❌ Number 3: Macadamia Nut Toxicosis

➡️ Why? The mechanism in which these nuts cause problems with our pets is still unknown.

➡️ How? When dogs ingests macadamia nuts most clinical signs appear within 12 hours. Signs include vomiting, increased body temperature (hyperthermia), weakness, and neurological depression.

➡️ When? If your pet ingests macadamia nuts (dogs are currently the only species in which clinical signs have been reported) do keep a close eye. It is associated with non lethal symptoms which are usually self limiting.

➡️ What? Have your pet examined asap by your veterinarian if clinical signs do not resolve with time (about 48 hours). Or if your pet stops eating/drinking. Medication may be needed to control symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea.

The importance of knowing about this toxicity is to know that it can have some similar clinical signs to ethylene glycol toxicosis which is life threatening and will be covered later this week!

We're back with another toxcity!

❌ Number 3: Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener)

➡️ Why? In dogs it can cause an abrupt increase of insulin leading to an abrupt drop in blood glucose (hypoglycemia).

➡️ How? When dogs ingest xylitol, it creates a large and rapid increase in insulin release. This then causes the pet's glucose to drop profoundly leading to hypoglycemia. Signs of hypoglycemia can begin within 30 minutes of ingestion but may be up to 18 hours. These signs include: vomiting, weakness, ataxia, depression, and seizures. Signs depend on the amount ingested and liver failure or comas can occur.

➡️ When? You should be concerned if you see any evidence your pet MAY have ingested sugar free/artificially sweetened foods.

➡️ What? Have your pet examined asap by your veterinarian to get a thorough history, bloodwork, and treatment if needed.

Products containing xylitol: Gum, Toothpaste, Peanut Butter, Jellow, Mouthwash, some Cereals, vitamins. This is not a complete list.

TGIF!

❌ Number 2: Raisins/Grapes

➡️ Why? The exact mechanism is still unknown. But as little as 4-5 grapes can cause kidney damage.

➡️ How? Damage occurs in the kidneys at the location of the proximal renal tubular epithelium. Why is this important? All you need to know is it’s because these tubules make up the largest area of the kidneys are are responsible for reabsorption of important nutrients!

➡️ When? You should be concerned if you see any evidence your pet MAY have ingested raisins or grapes. Clinical signs include: bomitjgn, diarrhea, pain in the belly, dehydration, increased thirst, and lethargy. This is not a complete list.

➡️ What? What do you do if you think your pet ingested chocolate? Have your pet examined asap by your veterinarian to get a thorough history, bloodwork, and treatment if needed.

Did you know? It’s a known fact that not every grape/raisin causes a problem in every pet. But since it is impossible to know, it is best to stay away all together.

Happy first Monday of October!

While this time of the year is exciting with the cooler weather and Halloween approaching, this month also brings with it the higher likelyhood of your pet ingesting something it shouldn’t! Over the month we are going to talk highlight some of the most common toxicities in dogs and cats.

❌ Number 1: CHOCOLATE 🍫

➡️ Why? Chocolate contains methylxanthine and caffeine

➡️ How? Together these compounds above cause disturbances (sometimes dealt) in your pets’ central nervous system and cardiovascular system.

➡️ When? You should be concerned if your pet ingest any amount of chocolate but especially if they are exhibiting: vomiting, diarrhea, enlarged abdomen, and appear not to be able to get comfortable. Signs may worsen to increased heart rate, blood pressure, and ataxia.

➡️ What? What do you do if you think your pet ingested chocolate? Have your pet examined asap by your veterinarian to begin treatment if needed.
