Long post but worth the read:
Brittany's recent overnight client unfortunately required an ER vet trip for sudden stomach issues. As a former ICU nurse, she was all over it the instant he started showing signs.
Our first step is to contact the owner. Your baby, your decisions! Unfortunately she was away from her phone. We discussed his symptoms, called a vet friend to confirm, & decided it was a time sensitive issue worth an ER trip. Thankfully, as part of our standard onboarding process for all new clients, we had already asked ALL the important emergency questions ahead of time! We already knew where mom would have wanted us to go and how much money she wanted us to spend in this situation. So off we went.
Eventually we connected with his owner & she was very grateful for our decision! Cash received bloodwork, subQ fluids, & meds. The vet said that we caught it in time before there was real damage.
Cash is celebrating today because he's finishing up his meds, feeling much better, AND it's his birthday! 🥳 Happy birthday Cash! We're so glad you're feeling better!
**If you are following our page and not yet a client, PLEASE make sure you discuss all emergency protocols and decisions with your sitter BEFORE you leave for vacation! (I.E. Which ER vet do you prefer? If we can't get in touch with you, do you give permission for your emergency contact to make medical decisions on your behalf? How would they like us to proceed with hospice clients? If your road is closed because of a hurricane, does a neighbor have a key? Etc.)
This was our second ER trip this month! The first one was during a routine walk. A neighbor’s dog escaped their backyard and attacked our client passing by. Again, we were thankful to already know what the owner’s wishes were. The dog had multiple puncture wounds but did fine after our ER visit.
My point is…..no one ever expects an emergency to happen to them, but they do happen. It’s better to prep ahead of time just incase!
Thank you Kim for the sweet words in your post!
