We wish every day was a swim day! Adding some swimming to Bentley's exercise regimen to help strengthen his aging back legs: they may not be as strong as they once were but his love for Ball & swimming still are!
In the 9 years I've been training, I've never met a harder group of dogs to teach nice leash walking than high drive bird dogs, namely Brittanys, GSPs, and working cockers. Having multiple types of walks is what has helped us the most. Context clues = clarity! A mature adult brain and lots of practice helps too.

Triangle πΊοΈ Recalls: one of my favorite exercises to strengthen the concept of the dog BYPASSING distractions in the environment to come to you when they're called. That silver prize bowl is just a metaphor for anything in the environment the dog wants to interact with--it could be a squirrel, a really good smell, the neighbor, etc. Dogs need to practice making an active choice between detouring to the distractions (aka prizes!), OR coming when called. And we don't want the dog to think coming to us always gets in the way of their fun: responding may grant them access to that fun environment.
.
Easy levels include being on leash and keeping the prize further from you & the dog. Build up to closer distances & off leash.
Day 25 π Word Recognition. See you in the New Year! π
Day 24 π Arm hoops & hulahoops. Jumping for joy! βοΈ
Day 23 π Hug...but that awkward stiff armed, butt out type of hug.
Day 22 π Clean Up! Cousin Chief has arrived from Atlanta! I tasked my brother and future sister-in-law with teaching Chief a trick for tricksmas and they did a good job π
Day 21 π Say Hi = Lean against. Really dropped the ball not getting over to a Santa or something to have the dogs Say hi to- ran out of time!
Leaning against someone is a nice alternative to other things for greetings. Sometimes sit is more difficult(especially on slippery floors), or uncomfortable for certain dogs & injuries, etc. If you don't like your dog to jump on people, Leaning is another tactile way your dog can engage with someone. Rey likes to jump and lean π€ͺ she gets away with a little naughty, that's for sure!
Day 20 π Conga! Sorta...can easily say we won't be winning any dance contests, ha.
Day 19 π Cooperative Care tricks! While it does take a lot of patience, you can teach your dog to cooperate with handling and wellness care. This is more of a necessity in Zoos! It's fun to watch cooperative care videos of zoo animals
Day 18 π Socks! Building off of yesterday's little helper tasks. I will need Bentleys larger mouth to successfully retrieve my drinks, though π
Day 17 π Tissue, please! Cute, but tissue + dog saliva is not the most practical.
Day 16 π Wrap around & Rewind (wrap backwards!) I'm still slowly working on improving this trick to have more fluid movement :)
Day 15 π Create! This behavior was taught for Rey to be a part of a project called the Creative Canine through Eckerd College and I just learned that the study will very soon be published in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology! The project was inspired by the Innovate project done with dolphins to research their innovative thinking skills to create different and new behaviors/tricks.
