When she finished college with a degree in mathematics, she applied to the Signal Corps and was employed as a āComputer.ā She worked on all types of calculations brought in by the lab's scientists and technicians. At first, no one in the office would speak to her but she pushed ahead solving problems other couldnāt. Eventually, she was promoted to āMathematicianā and was the only Black woman in her group with the training that went with the title. She worked on various top-secret projects including the response to the Soviet launch of Sputnik, and others having to do with testing nuclear detonations.
