Dogs and children. In a study, almost half of schoolchildren reported that they had been bitten by a dog.

Why? Here is one reason.

While adults made hardly any mistakes in classifying human and dog facial expressions in images, 69% of 4 year olds interpreted aggressive dog faces as smiling and happy.

When picking up training aids and toys be aware the the visual system of a dog is different from that of a human beings Dogs are dichromatic while humans have a trichromatic visual system. So, while, to you, red may seem like the most discernible color to work with your dog on grass, red actually appears grey to the dog. Also, their depth perception is not great and their binocular field about 60 degrees. Understanding the anatomical differences between dogs and humans is one way to help be a better trainer and life companion

Here is Dunbar talking about teaching bite inhibition. A few things to keep in mind.

1. You do not want to compel the dog not to bite; they are dogs, they explore with their mouths. What you do want to teach them is the amount of pressure that is acceptable when interacting with your skin or flesh. Teaching your dog to have a soft mouth is something you need to teach your dog. With some dogs what he refers to level 1 is all that you need.

2. With high prey drive dogs this will likely not be enough and will require Level 2 conditioning .This is a form of negative punishment where you take away (think minus in math) something the dog wants (you).

3. What Dunbar leaves out is what you must do if the dog still fails to get the point. The last thing you want is to allow for a behavior to escalate that may cost the dog its life later on So, there is always room for positive punishment (adding a aversive). From "no" to a well timed, emotionally neutral, physical stimulus, to stop the behavior.

Balanced training is key to helping your dog life successfully in the human world.

I understand that this is a challenging time to train a dog. However, not providing your dog with the tools to succeed in your home may set up the dog for failure down the road.

As we know more about the virus, so too can we start modifying training to keep everyone safe.

Training outdoors with individual dogs being kept in crates until it is time to work on a skill is one strategy to help your dog continue to learn in this difficult time.
